THEDORE E. PERKINS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO MARY FRANCES PERKINS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
EGG-CASE.
Specification 'of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 1o, 190e.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEoDoRE E. PER- KINs, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and resident of the cit and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Egg-Cases, of which the following is a specilisation.
This invention relates to that class of eggcases in which the interior of the case is subdivided into compartments or cells for the reception of the eggs, my object being to provide a simple and .efficient construction whereby the body of the case shall be maintained yieldingly above and out of contact with the surface on which the case may bev to protect the consupported so as thereby tents of the case from violent shocks or jars, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a plan of a blank for my improved egg-case, dotted fold' lines being indicated. Flg. 2 1s a perspective View of the case.' Fig. 3 is a vertical section thereof, enlarged, the cell bod being omitted. Fig. 4 is a sectional details owing a slight modification ofthe case.
A represents the case proper comprisin the bottom a; end walls a,"sides a2, an top iiaps a3, the whole being composed of a single piece of strawboard, or other suitable yie ding material, stamped into ap ropriate form and then bent into sha e: 'lhc flaps constituting the ends and 4si es of the box are provided, as usual, with suitable tongues and slots which are adapted to be interlocked when .the blank is bent into final form.
l represents the usual partitioning bod which 1s loosely fitted within the case to d1- vide the interior of the latter into a series of compartments or cells for the reception and separation of the eggs.
As a sim le and efficient means to sustain the body o the case yieldingly above the underlying supporting surface, and thus prevent the breaka e of the e gs b concussion with the latter, Iprovide tile si es (or ends) of the case with de ending members a5. To roduce these mem ers I preferably make eac side (or end) ortion of the blank of double width, or substantially so, and provide its outer edge with a reduced extension or tongue a5. I also form in the bottom portion of the blank, adjacent each of the sidefold lines, a lon itudinal slot a6 substantially the length of tie tongue. In bending the the depend vided with slots in the blank into case form, the extra width aof the side is folded inwardly, and its tongue a5 is extended down through the proximate slot a, as illustrated. 'By thisconstruction ing tongues have capacity for limited vertical movement relatlve to .the body ofthe case, and independently of each other, thereby serving not only as sup orting members to maintain lthe body of the case above the underlying surface, but also as cushions to reduce to a minimum any mitt'ed vto the contents of the case by sudden im act of the members with such surface.
t is to be oted that the side portions of the blank, ifmade somewhat more than shock or jar that would otherwise be trans-.
double width, will, when medially folded inwardly, as above described, above the to of the body of the case,'asl indicated by t e dotted lines at a8 in Fig. 3,- and thus, in the event ofthe case pending members to sustain the body of the case above the underlying supporting surface.
If desired the folds a7, instead of being integral wi-th the walls of the case, may be separately formed portions aflixed each tongue a5, instead of being a single member, may be divided into two or more parts projectingthrough a long slot or through two or more indicate in Fig. 4.
I claim as my invention- 1. An egg-casey blank comprising a slotted bottom portion, side and end portions, and
inner foldable portions having tongues ada t ed to depend vertically into, through and elow the slots in the bottom portion when the blank is bent into case form.
2. An .egg-case com rising-,a body provided with slotsrin the lbottom thereof, supporting members depending vertically into, through and below said slots, and ylelding connections between said members and the walls of the body.
3 An egg-case comprising a body probottom thereof, and inner folds on the walls of said body provided. with tongues depending vertically into, through and below sald slots.
