Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Sept. a, 1913.
Application filed March 1, 1912. Serial No. 680,928.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE D. M RTON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Sandusky, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Egg-Crates or Shipping-Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
It is the object of the invention to obtain a construction of paper box in which eggs may be safely carried or shipped without danger of crushing, and to this end the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter set forth. I
In the drawings,Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank from which the box is formed; Fig. 2 is a sectional, perspective view showing a portion of the box with the cover closed; and Fig. 3 is a similar view with the cover partly open.
The material from which the box is formed is preferably a double faced corrugated or cellular paper board which is blanked out and scored as shown in Fig. 1, with a bottom portion A, sides 13 and C, ends D and E divided from each other'by scored lines F, G, H, I. The ends D have integral flaps J and K at each side thereof which are divided from the portions B and O by slits L. The portion J is to form an end port-ion J of lesser height and a bevel connecting portion J The flap K is preferably round as shown. from the center of the intersecting scores H and G.
M is a cover portion divided from the'p0rtion G by the score line N, and O is a down turned flap or flange on the cover divided therefrom by the scored line P, the ends of said flap being beveled at Q, to correspond with the bevel J 2 of the flaps J.
The blank just described when formed up will make a rectangular box with the flaps J and K turned in adjacent to the sides B and C. The lower edges of these flaps will bear against the bottom of the box forming a brace for holding the end in perpendicular position and a strip of paper or tape R pasted over the end and overlapping the sides will hold the parts in this position. The cover M when closed will rest upon the top edge of the sides while the down turned flap or flange O with its bevel ends Q, will bear upon the upper edge of the flap J with its reduced end portion J and bevel J Thus any ordinary weight or pressure upon the cover cannot crush it in or cause it to bear upon the eggs of other fragile contents of the package.
To hold the eggs out of contact with each other any ordinary construction of cross partitions may be used.
In the specification and claims the employment of the word sides as designat-- blank of corrugated board slitted and scored to form integral sides, ends, a bottom, a cover, andflaps, said parts being arranged to provide a rigid bearing and said flaps projecting from the ends, folded at right angles thereto and having the bottom edges thereof engaging the bottom of the box whereby said flaps form braces for the ends,
and a flange depending from the free end of the cover and arranged within the box, and
engaging said bearing, whereby the latter 7 forms a support for the cover.
2. In a paper box, the combination of bot-- tom, sides, ends and a cover, formed of an integral blank of heavy corrugated board and divided from each other by slitted and scored lines, a flange integral with the end, folded inward to lie adjacent to the inner face of a side and resting on the bottom, whereby said flap forms a brace for said end, said flap being cut away to provide a bearing portion of reduced height and a beveled connecting portion, and a depending flange on the free edge of the cover, beveled to fit the beveled portion of said flap and engaging the bearing portion thereof, providing a support for the free edge.
3. A paper box or package, comprising a blank of heavy corrugated board slitted or scored to form integral sides, ends, a bottom, a cover, and flaps projecting from each side of the ends, folded at right angles thereto and having the bottom edges thereof engaging the bottom of the box to form braces for theends, one flap of each end being partially cutaway forming" a bearing, and a flange depending from the free edge of the cover arranged Within the boX and engaging the bearings whereby said flange forms a sup port for said cover edge.
4. A paper box or package, comprising a blank of heavy corrugated board slitted and scored to form integral sides, ends, a bottom, a cover and flaps projecting laterally from opposite sides of the ends and free from the sides, said flaps being folded at right angles to the ends and having the bottom edges thereof engaging the bottom of the box whereby said flaps form braces for the ends, the forward flap of each end being cut away to provide a bearing portion of reduced height and a beveled connecting portion, and a flange depending from the free edge of the cover and extending substantially the entire length thereof, said flange being beveled at the ends to fit the beveled portions of the flaps and engaging the bean ing portion of the flaps, providing a support for said cover edge.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
