PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH P. BUOKINGHAM, OF OHIOOPEE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, GEORGE A. DENISON, AND O. M. HAMILTON, BOTH OF SPRING- FIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
FOLDING Box.
SPECIFICATION forming` part of Letters Patent No. 241,525, dated May 17, 1881. Application nieu october 21, isso. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Beit known that-I, J osEPH P. BUCKINGHAM, of Ghicopee, in the county of .Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Boxes, (which has not been patented to any person in any foreign country with my knowledge and consent,) of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a box made from a blank formed in a single piece Figure I represents a blank for a box and cover cut in a single piece and showing the lines forfolding; and Fig. II represents the box and cover made from a blank in a single piece when folded, and secured by a cord, by which it is carried.
In the drawings, Fig. I represents the boxblank with the cover portion formed in a single piece from a sheet of suitably rigid and strong paper, and creased for folding at the lines 6,4forming the two sides A A, the bottom G,the two ends 3 3, and the cover D. A ap, B, is formed on each end of each side` piece, A, said iiap being provided with a slit, e, extending in the iiat blank in a direction substantially at right angles to the length of the box, or to the length of each side piece, A, and the cover D is provided with side and end pieces,
l and 2, which may extend either the whole length ot' the side and ends of the cover or only partially so, as may be most desired. Acord or tape, 5, is secured vto each end flap, 3, by which the box is secured in a folded condition and carried. In forming this blank into a box the end aps, 3, are rst bent or folded up at right angles to the bottom O, and the side pieces, A, are folded up against the edges of the end aps, with the latter inside the aps B, and the part D is then brought over, formingthe cover. After these different parts are folded, as above described, the tape or cord 5 is brought up over the top and passed up into the slits e in the aps B at each end of the box, and the side and end pieces, l and 2, may extend around the upper portion of the box or one or more of them may be tucked inside, as desired.v In either case, when the box so formed is carried in the hand by the tape or cord, it will be held securely in its folded form, as shownL clearly in Fig. II.
Instead of making the cover part D integral with the box-blank, it may be made separate and its sides made to look together; or it may be made, in the usual manner, by scoring and bending down the sides and ends; or the cover may be formed up by means of dies.
Boxes made according to vthis invention are well adapted to carry fancy articles, hats, bon Ilets, dry goods, many kinds of groceries, and, in fact, almost anything not of a liquid nature, and they may be kept in stockin the dat blanks and folded up into box forni as they are wanted andas goods are sold to be carried away, using them instead of wrapping-paper. They may be made of any suitable rigid and strong paper,
'covered straw-board or strong Manila paper being well adapted to the purpose.
Having described 1nyvinvention,-What I claim as new is- 1. A blank for afolding box, formed in a single piece, consisting of the part C, with its end flaps, 3, the parts A and theirend iiaps, B, provided each with a slit, e, and creased for folding, so that when folded into box form the said slits e shall be in the same vertical plane, one outside the other, at each end ofthe box, to receive a cord, substantially as described.
2. An improved folding box, consisting of the bottom C, the end flaps, 3, the sides A, their end flaps, B, each provided with a slit, e, and a cord or tape, 5, secured to the end flaps, by which the box is secured in its folded form and carried, in combination with a cover for said box, substantially as set forth.
JOSEPH P. BUGKINGHAM.
