  • This invention relates to paper boxes, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a paper box which can be readilyfolded to occupy but little space, and which can be readily extended for use.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORETON MOUNTFORD ROLLEsTONE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to paper boxes, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a paper box which can be readilyfolded to occupy but little space, and which can be readily extended for use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a box'having inwardly folding sides and ends which lie within the outline of the bottom of the box when folded, and to provide a cover in which the surrounding flange is also foldable within the outline of the cover in order that the box and cover may be packed in a small compass to be readily expansible for use.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated inthe accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hat box made in accordance with my invention, said box being shown expanded and the cover secured thereto by a string. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the body portion of the box folded. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the inner side of the cover with theflange thereof folded down.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the body por- I tion of the box partially opened out. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one side and one end of the box blank. Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view of the box.
Referring to the drawings for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates the sides and end portions of the box, and 2 is the bottom of the same. The sides of the box are provided with inturned flanges 3 secured to the bottom 2 of the box, and inclined folding creases 4 extend from the corners near the bottom of the box to the top thereof, and a short inclined folding crease 5 extends from the top edge of the sides down to the crease 4 a slight distance below the top edge of the box.
One side and one end of the box may be formed of a single piece of paper or cardboard, as shown in Fig. 5, said blankbeing Scored at 6 and bent to form one of the corners, and at one edge of the blank a flange or pasting strip 7 is provided which is bent at right angles and secured to the other section of the side ofthe box. A tape or cord 8 is secured to the opposite sides of the box, said tape or cord adapted to be used for expanding the box after it has been colla sed, and also for securing the cover on the ox.
The box body, made up of two such sections as that shown in Fig. 5 and properly united to the bottom, may be folded, as shown in Fig. 2 by pressing the sides of the box inward, as shown in Fig. 4, the triangulFar portions 9 being interlocked, as shown in The cover 10 is provided with a downwardly extending flange 11, and said flange is foldable against the body portion of the cover, by being scored u on theline 12 at each corner, as shown in ig. 8.
From the foregoing it will be obvious tha a paper box made in accordance with my in vention can be quickly folded within the outline of the bottom of the box, and that the box may be quickly expanded by pulling outward upon the tapes 8, and that the cover extending in an inclined direction from one of the lower corners to the upper edge thereof, and with a second score line extending from the upper edge of the side of the box to said inclined score, whereby the sides of the box are adapted to fold upon the bottom, a suitable cover for said box, and tapes secured to opposite sides of the box, said tapes serving both to open the body of the box and to tie the cover thereof, substantially as described.
