To all whom it may concern.' ,l i p .p
Be it known thatI, RALPH R. RrorrAIm-` SON, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and-a A resident` of Chicago, countyofCook, and State of Illinois, have 'invented'certain new and useful Improvements inFoldinr 'Paper Boxes, of which the followingis a yfu lcle'ar, and exact description. l
The invention relates. to folding .paperl boxes and seeks to provide a simple, strong construction which can be economically manufactured' and .which canfbe shippedk in collapsed or knock-down form.-` y The invention consists the-features'of improvement hereinafter Yset forth, illustrated in the preferred forms in the accompanying drawing and `more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the* blank from which the improved boX is formed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view illus trating the manner of folding the parts of the box. Fig. 3 is a perspective view ofthe complete box with the cover or lid open.`
Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the complete box with the lid closed. Figs. 5 and 6 are views similar to Figs. 3 and 4, respectively, illustrating the modified form.
The improved box comprises a bottomv wall a, opposite end walls b and c and oppo.
site side or front and rear walls d and e. Scored portions 1 form the vertical corners of the box and connect the opposite side and end walls. The side or rear wall elis provided at its end with an integral` folding tab or flap 2, which is connected thereto by one of the vertical scores 1. The opposite end walls are provided at their upper and lower edges with integral folding flaps 3 and 4 which are connected thereto by horizontal scores 5. The upper end flaps 3 are quite narrow, while the bottom end flaps 4 are of considerable width. In the form shown, the narrow, upper `end flaps 3 are provided with scalloped edges. p tom wall. a is formed integral with the side or front wall d and is connected thereto by the horizontal scored portion 6. The bottom has an integral extension. f connected to its opposite or rear edge by the horizontal score 7 and the extension f is provided with the folding portion g connected thereto by a horizontal score 8. In the preferred form of the invention shownin Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, the part g forms the cover of the box and is provided at its free edge with an inte- The botthereto by a horizontal score 11.y
Aa; r e... naar as ,forma,@samen im Fig. 1, the end `wall and the rear Walla?` are `folded upon the .end wall .a and front wall fd, and the` tab "orf flap` @is pasted `to the inner face ofthe edge portion: of the `end `wall c.' The parts f and g can then be folded upwardly about ythegscoredline 7 and the box y shipped, in` collapsed condition. In foldin'gfthe box for`,use',lthe"side `and end walls arerseparated: and the iaps and 4 i folded inwardly es Shown n Fig 2. The zbitorn `ais then. foldedtupwardlyl against 5 the bottom. end; `flaps 4` and` the extensen4 f yand portion g thereon are turned up and are passed between the rear walle andthe inturned end""liapisi`i3 `and' 4. To facilitate the passage of the extension f, the part g 10 between the rear wall e and and the flap the flaps 4, the rear edges 12 of the latter are preferably` inclined or cut away,` as
tension f snugly against the inner face of the side or rear wall e and the folding portion g overlaps the upper end flaps 3, so that the extension f and folding bottom a are securely held in position.
In the preferred form shown in Figs.,1 to 4, inclusive, the folding portion g forms `the cover of the box and the liap `10 at its outer edge is adapted to sbe inserted between the forward edges of the upper end aps 3 and the front d of the box to hold the cover closed, as shown in Fig. 4. To facilitate opening the box, the upper edge of the front wall is referably provided with a notch 13.
The orm shown in Figs. 5 and 6 is simi` lar to that shown in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive,
shown. The end flaps 3 and 4 hold the eX- except that the folding portion g at the upper end of the extension f is quite nar-` row and, in the form shown, its forward edge is scalloped. This portion g overlaps the upper end flaps 3 and holds the extension f and folding bottom a in position. In this `form of the invention the cover h is connected to the upper edge of the rear wall e and is preferably formed integral therewith. Like the cover portion g of the form shownin Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, the cover z is provided with a flap 10 at its outer edge arranged to be inserted between the front wall and the upper end flaps 3.
The construction can be economically manufactured and shipped in'collapsed form.
When the parts are opened and folded, as
described, a strong, rigid covered box is provided. l f y ItI should be noted that vthe folding bottom cannot be pushed into the box` because it overlaps the lower Haps 4 of the endwalls and is held againstbeing depressed Aby the inturned portion" of the extension fwhi'ch overlaps the upper flaps 3 of the end walls. In -the 4preferred form, as shown, the iaps 4 extend inwardly to a point substantially midway between thev end walls, so thatl a u strong, double bottom is provided for the f nected to the lower edge of one of said side l Copies of this patent may be obtained for walls and overlapping said lower end flaps and having an upturned extension arranged `between the opposite side wall and said upper and lower end iaps, said extension having an inwardly folded portion overlapping said upper end flaps, substantially as described.
. 2. A folding paper box comprising connected front, end and rear walls, said end walls having inturned Haps at their upper and lower edges, and a folding bottom connected to the lower edge of said front wall and overlapping said lower end aps and having an upturned extension at its rear edge arranged between said rear wall and said upper and lower end flaps, said extension having an inwardly folded portion forming a cover for the boX and arranged to overlap said upper end Haps, substantially as described.
