Be it known thatv I, MICHAEL WWVALDORF, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of lviinnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in folding boxes of the class commonly made of pasteboard and so constructed that they may be folded flat for convenience in packing and subsequently converted into ordinary box form, its object being to provide a box in which the parts shall be firmly locked together and the body of the box stiffened to hold its shape and which shall be at the same time readily separable into independent sections without being damaged.

To this end my invention consists in the features ofconstruction, combination, and arrangements of parts hereinafter specifically described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 shows the blank of which the main or outer section of the box is composed. Fig. 2 shows the blank of which the inner section is composed, partly broken away. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of theouter section partially set up to show the manner of folding. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the inner section in folded form, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the completed box formed by putting together the two sections.

The blank A, (shown in Fig. 1,) constituting the main orouter section of the box, coinprises the following parts: 2, forming the bottom of the box; 3,'its top or cover; 4, the topsecuring flap; 5, its outer front side, with the side-locking strips or flaps 7 and 8 connected therewith; 6, its rear side, with the sidelocking strips 9 and connected therewith; 11

and 12, forming the outer ends or end sides of the box, and the extension- flaps 13 and 14, connected with said end pieces, respectively, and adapted to be folded inward over the locking-strips and doubled down against the inner sides of said strips to hold the outer end sides 11 and 12 in upright position.

To fold the blank Ainto box form, as shown in Fig. 3, the locking- strips 7 and 8 and 9 and 10 are first turned inward, so as to stand at right angles with the sides 5 and 6, and the sides 5 and 6 are folded toward each other into upright position, bringing the locking strips 7 and 9 and S and 10, respectively, together into overlapping position. The locking-strips are made, preferably, of sufficient length to extend entirely across the end of the box from the front to the rear side. In order to hold the sides securely together, I have formed the locking-strips at each end of the box with opposirely-arranged slots and 16, the slots in the strips 7 and 8 being cut down from the outer or upper side and the slots in the strips 9 and 10 being cut upward from their lower or inner sides. In crossing the strip 9 over the strip 7 the slot 15 in the strip 9 will slip over and receive the strip 7, the strip 9 being at the same time received in the slot 16 in the strip 7, shown in Fig. 3. The strips 8 and 10, at the other end of the box, are engaged and interlocked in the same manner. The end sides 11 and 12 are then brought into upright position against the outside of the locking-strips, and the flaps 13 and 14 are turned inwardly over the strips and doubled down against their inner sides, as shown in Fig. 3 at the left, holding the outer end pieces 11 and 12 in upright position. To

hold and lock the flaps 13 and 14 in this po sition and to stiffen the box, I provide the section shown in Fig. 4, made from the blank B. (Shown in Fig. 2.) This blank consists of a strip of substantially the same height as the sides and ends of the outer section of the box, except for the ornamental border 23, and consists of front and rear side pieces 19 and 20 and end pieces 21 and 22, corresponding in length with the sides and ends, respectively, of the main section of the box, an upwardly-extending ornamental border .23, and a seeming-flap 24, adapted to be pasted upon the free end of the part 19, as shown in Fig. 4, when the parts are folded upon the dotted lines in Fig. 2 and the ends brought together to form the section shown in Fig. 4. 0

To assemble the sections after they have been set up, as above described, the inner section is placed within the outer section, firmly locking the flaps l3 and 14 against the inner sides of the strips 7 and 9 and 8 and 10, re speciively, and forming the inner faces of the sides and end walls of the completed box.

(Shown in Fig. 5.) The cover may then be folded down and secured in place by inserting the flap 4 between the front sides 5 and 19 of the outer and inner sections, respectively.

While I prefer to provide the locking-stri ps with means for interlocking and engaging with the opposite strip at the same end of the box in order to hold the parts more securely together, this is not absolutely essential, for the strips are held very firmly in folded position by the downwardly-turned flaps 13 and 14.- and the inner section of the box, even when they are not interlocked, but simply overlap and,indeed,itisnotnecessarythat theyshould even overlap in order to be so held in place, it being only necessary that they should extend inward a short distance from the front and rear sides of the box. v

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A folding box composed of two independent sections, an outer section forming the cover and bottom and the outer side and end pieces of the box, the side pieces having locking-strips adapted to be turned inwardly toward each other, and the end pieces having extension-flaps adapted to be folded inwardly over the locking strips and downwardly against their inner sides, and an inner section forming the inner side and end walls only of the box.

2. A folding box composed of two independent sections, an outer section forming the cover and bottom and the outer side and end pieces of the box, the side pieces being provided with means for interlocking with each other and the end pieces having extension-flaps adapted to be folded inwardly over said interlocking means and downwardly upon themselves, and an inner section having side and end walls only, said walls fitting closely against, and conforming in length to, the inner side of the side and end walls of said outer section.

3. A folding box composed of two separate sections, an outer section forming the cover and bottom and the outer side and end pieces of the box, each side piece having lockingstrips connected with its outer edges and adapted to be folded inwardly toward each other, the strips upon the front side overlapping the opposite strips upon the rear side, and the end pieces having extension-flaps adapted to be doubled over the adjacent locking-strips and against inner sides thereof, and an inner section having end and side pieces only, said pieces fitting closely against the extensionflaps and side pieces of the outer section whereby said extension-flaps are locked in folded position.

4. A folding box composed of two distinct and separable sections, an outer section forming thecover and bottom and the outer side and end pieces of the box, the side pieces having an inwardly-turnable locking-strip at each end, said strips being formed with means for engaging and interlocking with the adjacent strips upon the opposite side, and the end pieces having extension-flaps adapted to be folded over the locking-strips to hold the side piece in upright position, and an inner section comprising side and end pieces only, said pieces conforming in size and shape to the side and end pieces of the outer section and fitting closely within the same.

5. A folding box having double end and side walls and composed of two distinct and separable sections, an outer section comprising a bottom, side pieces connected with the opposite edges thereof and formed at each end with an inwardly-turnable locking-strip, extending from one side piece to the other, end pieces connected with the remaining edges of the bottom and adapted to be folded and doubled over said locking-strips, and a cover, and an inner section fitting closely within the outer section and comprising side and end pieces only, said pieces conforming in size and shape with the side and end pieces of the outer section and forming the inner side and end walls of the box.

6. A folding box comprising an outer section forming the cover and bottom and outer side and end pieces, said side pieces having means for detachable connection with each other and an inner section having side and end pieces only, said pieces conforming to the side and end pieces of the outer section.

7. A folding box having double end and side walls and composed of two distinct and separate sections, an outer section forming the cover and bottom and the outer side and end pieces of the box, the side pieces having 105 an inturned locking-strip at each end and the end pieces having extension-flaps folded inwardly over the adjacent inturned lockingstrips and down against the inner sides thereof, and an inner section having side and end no pieces only, said pieces fitting closely against the side pieces and extension-flaps respectively of the outer section and forming the inner side and end walls of the box.
