Description

H. P.- FISKE.
(M'odeL) BOX.
' No. 265,589. Patented 00t.10', 1882. V
v/ -01; @o m llwrrn STATES ATENT Enron.
HENRY P. FISKE, OF PORTLAND, ASSIGNOR TO LESLIE L. CURTIS, OF CAPE ELIZABETH, MAINE.
BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 265,559, dated October 10, 1882.
Application filed March 11,1882. (Modeh) To all whom "it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY P. FIsKE, of Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful [mprovementsin Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referro ence being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 shows a plan of a piece of paper out and creased in the manner necessary to form my box. Fig. 2 is an edge sectional view ot'the lock of the cover. Fig.3 is a detail view of the lock for the side of the box.
Same letters show like parts.
My invention relates to the manufacture of boxes from a single sheet or board of thin material, like card board, thick paper, scaleboard, and other like materials.
My invention consists of a box formed of a single sheet of thin material, the said piece being cut, scored, folded, and united in the manner hereinafter described.
Fig. l is out from a sheet or piece.
(6 shows the lid or cover of the box.
b is the flap that folds down vertically over the front side, 0.
d is the part that forms the back side.
'0 is the part that forms the bottom of the box.
ff form the ends of the box. It will he understood that the ends and sides stand upright when the box is formed or folded up.
g 9 show interior end pieces folded up from the bottom 0.
h It show flaps folded down from the lid a, and they pass in between the end pieces, 9 g and f f. The end pieces ff have each a vertical slot 03 i. The back side, 0?, has the two earsjj, formed as illustrated in the drawings, formed also on the flaps 70k, and having the slits l Z out in, as illustrated. The flaps is it go on the outsides of the end pieces f f, and the ears j j enter the vertical slots 1' z". The pressure of the material of the end pieces, ff, which is over the edges of the ears 9' j, 50 where the slits Z Z are made, forces the edges of the slits against the edges of the slot i 1'" toward the front and back sides of the box, and thus locks the ears in the slots. The cars are thus so looked as to prevent any movement of them either backward or forward. The slots are mere cuttings or gashes, and are made without removal of any of the material. The front edges of the slits ll on'the ears prevent their being drawn back out of the slots i i, and the back edges of the slits l l 6 prevent the ears from entering any farther into the slots it. This is seen in Fig. 3,where the edges of the slits Z Z are pressed in so as to strike against the edge at. The flap b has the ear n, with the aperture 0, made as shown. 6 The front side, 0, has the horizontal slit p and the tongue q, formed by the two slots r r. The car a enters the horizontal slit p, and the tongue q then springs into the aperture 0, the lower end of the tongue striking the edge 0 of the aperture 0. By pressing on the tongue q with the finger and pushing it inwardly the ear n is released and the cover a can belifted. Two short slits, s, are made in the ear of the lid or cover, so that the piece 15 can be pushed in a little, in order to facilitate striking against the tongue. I
The method of putting the box together is: Turn up the front side, a, to a vertical position. Fold in theinner side pieces,gg. Then fold in the outer end pieces, ff. Place the earsjj in the slits i t".
The lines marked 1, Fig. 1, indicate the scores in the material to facilitate the folding of the various parts, which are all connected. 8
What I claim as my invention, and desire to by Letters Patent, is-
The box herein described, cut and scored and folded in the manner set forth, having the end pieces f f, inside end pieces, 9 9, slots i i, ears j j, with slits l l, edge at, aperture 0, slit-p, slots 1" r, and slits s, as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix mysigiiature in presence of two witnesses.
VVILLIAM HENRY CLIFFORD, JOHN P. KERRIGAN.
