Application October 1, 1947,Serial No. 777,164
2 Claims. (01. 22935) This invention relates to folding box construction, and particularly folding boxes which are constructed from paper board material, the primary object of the invention being to provide a folding box which may be constructed of exceptionally light weight paper board material, but due to the construction of the box, will be exceptionally strong and durable, thereby appreciably reducing the cost of box construction, while at the same time providing an exceptionally strong box which will not crush under usual wear conditions.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a folding box construction which will be exceptionally neat in appearance to the end that a much more attractive package will be produced than with the folding box structures now in common use.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a folding box structure, wherein tabs are provided which cooperate with the inner surface of one side of the box in clamping a cellophane or transparent sheet of material over a display opening of the box through which the contents of the box may be observed.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of one section of a box constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view illustrating one end of a box constructed in accordance with the invention, the tabs and end wall of the box being shown partly in an open position.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view through the box in its folded position.
Figure 4 is a view of the blank from which the box is folded.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the blank from which the main body portion of the box is constructed, comprises a central portion 5, the longitudinal side edges thereof indicated by the reference character 6 being folded inwardly on the lines 1 to provide the side edges of the box.
The ends 8 Of the blank are separated from the longitudinal side edges 6, by means of the slits providing end tabs 10 which are adapted to be folded inwardly on the lines I l and I2. The tabs are formed with enlargements l3 that are constructed to provide locking slots I 4, the enlargements :3 being designed to fit within the slits [5 of the ends 8. The ends -8 are severed from the central portion 5, by the cuts l6, providing triangular portions I! which when folded along the lines 18 provide sections adapted to contact with the bottom or central portion 5 of the box to brace the end members. In order that the enlargements l3 may be readily positioned in the slits l5 when the box is folded, the sections of which the enlargements l3 form a part, may be folded or bent intermediate their side edges, along the lines l9.
The cover section of this box is practically the same as the body portion described, with the exception that the cover section is formed with a rectangular cut out portion or opening which is covered by the transparent sheet 20 as shown by Figure 1 of the drawing, the triangular portions l1 fitting over the corners of the transparent sheet 20, holding the transparent sheet in position. The longitudinal edges 2| of the transparent sheet, are folded against the sides 6, as shown by Figure 1 of the drawing, holding the transparent sheet 20 in position.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, I have provided a cardboard box construction which is exceptionally strong and durable, owing to the manner of folding the box into shape, thereby making it possible to provide a box which is exceptionally cheap owing to the fact that the weight of the cardboard material used may be greatly reduced.
What is claimed is:
1. A foldable box, comprising a blank formed into a body portion including a central front section having an opening formed therein, side sections formed along the longitudinal edges of the central section, end sections formed at the ends of the body portion, securing means at the ends of the side sections and end sections, securing the side sections and end sections together in forming the box, a transparent sheet positioned over the opening in the central section, and corner portions only of the end sections being folded inwardly over the transparent sheet in contact therewith holding the transparent sheet in posi tion over the opening, between the central section and inwardl folded corner portions.
2. A foldable box comprising a blank formed into a body portion including a central section having an opening, the longitudinal edges of the central section being folded upwardly providing the sides of a box, the ends of the central section being folded upwardly providing the ends of a box, means for securing the side sections and end sections together in forming a box, triangular portions formed on the end sections, said triangular portions being folded inwardly and lying in contact with the central section, bracing the side and (and sections, said triangular sections engaging -the 'centr'alsection, and a transparent sheet held between the triangular portions and central section closing the opening in the central section.
