Application October 1, 1947, Serial No. 777,163
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to box construction, and more particularly to boxes of cardboard or other suitable material, which are folded from blanks cut in a particular manner.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a cardboard box blank which is so constructed that when portions thereof are folded inwardly, the inwardly folded portions constitute the sides and end of a box, tabs being provided on the ends of the side and end sections, the tabs being so constructed and arranged that when the end sections are folded inwardly, the tabs of the side sections will overlie the end sections in such a way to securely hold the box in its formed position.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a blank which when folded in accordance with the invention, will provide a box with double end walls, the tabs of the end Walls extending appreciable distances over the ends of the side walls to brace the side walls.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawings Figure l is a perspective View of a box constructed in accordance with the invention and folded into shape.
Figure 2 is a fragmental perspective View illustrating one end of the box prior to the folding of the tabs of the side and end sections inwardly over each other.
Figure 3 is a fragmental elevational View illustrating one corner of the box, the view being taken exteriorly of the bottom.
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view taken longitudinally through a box folded from a blank constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 5 is a diagrammatic view illustrating the blank from which the box is folded.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the blank comprises a length of cardboard material, cut to provide a central section 5, the ends of the central section being out along inwardl extended lines 6, which are shaped to provide tabs '1? formed at the extremities of the end sections 8 of the box blank. The end sections when folded along the lines 9 will provide the ends of the box, and when folded along the lines I!) and II, will provide the corners of the box, the folded portion along the line H causing the tabs 7 to be directed inwardly over the ends of the sides l2.
The sides It when folded inwardly along the lines It, will provide the sides of the box, and when the end portions of the sides !2 are folded inwardly along the lines M and I5 provides the corners of the box that fit around the end Sections to brace the end sections and provide double walled end sections. When making the out along line 6, tabs it are formed at the ends of the side members- 52, the tabs having pointed portions l'i adapted to it into slits It formed in the end sections 8. Formed in the side sections l2, are slits 59 which are so disposed that the tabs 7! will extend. thereinto, when the end sections are folded inwardly. The pointed portions ll of the tabs [6 are split as at 20 to the end that when the tabs l6 are moved so that the pointed portions Il thereof extend through the slits 18, the split portions of the tabs. will interlock as clearly shown in Figure 1 of the drawings, preventing vertical movement of the tabs with respect to each other.
The end sections 8 are also out along the lines 2!, providing corner pieces 22 which extend inwardly and rest on the bottom section or central section 5, when the ends are folded inwardly, thereby bracing the central section at the corners of the box,
From the foregoing it will be seen that by cutting a length of cardboard box material into a blank as shown by Figure 5 of the drawings and folding the blank along the dotted lines, a box will be provided which has double walled ends and the tabs by means of which the end sections are connected to the sides, are so arranged that they will lock with the end and side sections to hold the box in its folded or boxlike condition.
What is claimed is:
In a folding box, a blank comprising a central section, side sections formed along the side edges of the central section, said side sections having slits formed intermediate their ends disposed at oblique angles with respect to the edges of the side sections, end sections formed at the ends of the central section, curved tabs formed at the ends of the end sections, said end sections overlapping the ends of the side sections and extending to positions appreciable distances along the side sections, the tabs thereof entering the slits of the side sections, said end sections having spaced vertical slits, the ends of the side sections being folded inwardly towards each other over the end sections, tongues formed at the ends of the side sections extending through the slits of the end sections, the tongues of the side sections being split inwardly from their ends interlocking within the box when the split ends are brought together, securing the end sections and side sections in their extended positions and providing a, double-walled box.
