'provide a box from sheets having parts adaptedvto be erected and joined so as to provide a structure that is symmetrically reinforced in all of its sides or sides and ends without waste of material, while having a neat and finished interior constructi'on with the ends of locking members covered and tied in place.'
My improved box provides the desiderata of a closed construction in which each of the four sides has triple thickness,d alfording stifening reinforcements for the respective sides, and a smooth and sightly interior construction extending substantially throughout lengths of all the sides or sides and ends, adapted to be erected from unitary blanks conveniently and locked together securely.
4In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of one of the formed and: 'knocked-down sheets used in making a closed box in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the other of the two knockedgdown sheets which may be used in forming the complementary box member; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a box member erected from the construction shown in Fig. 1;' Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a box member erected from the construction shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line x-" of Fig. 3;-Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a section of a box member of modifiedy construction; Fig. 7 is a broken sectional view taken on'the line 7"- X of Fig.. 6; Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a section of a further modified construction; Fig. 9 is a broken sectional view taken on the lineI 9",- of Fig. 8 Fig. 10 is a perspective view of a box section embodyin a further modication'in construction; an Fig. 11 is a broken sectional view takenl on` lineA 11i-11x of Fig. 1o.
yslots 11.
The construction illustrated in Fig. 1,'
which is adapted to be erected to form the box member illustrated in Figs. 3 and 5, comprises the rectangular body section 1 having the side sections 2 integrally connected therewith along the scores 3, and the end sections 4 integrally connected therewith along the scores 5. The ends 4 have the flaps 6 integrally connected therewith along the scores 7. The sides 2 have the end extensions 8 integrally connected therewith along the scores 9 in line with the scores 5 and separated from the part-s 4 and 6 by through cuts 10 in line with the scores 3.
The flaps 6 are approximately of the same length and the same width lor depth as the sections 4. The flaps or extensions 8 are of substantially the same depth or wid-th `as the respective parts 2, 4 and 6, and of a length corresponding to the combined widths of the parts 4 and 6 so that the sheet may be formed without substantial waste. Each of the extensions 8 vis provided with a slot 11 preferably parallel to and near its inner edge, and each of the flaps 6 is provided with the lugs 12 preferably near its respective outer ends and adapted to be ,engaged The end Isections 2 are provided with the integrally formed extensions 8 having substantially the same depth or width, joined thereto along the scores 9 in line with the scores 5', and separated from the Sections 4 and 6 by` the through cuts 10 in line with the scores 3. The parts 2 are provided with the slots-11l preferably parallel to and near the'lines 10- and the flaps 6 have thereon near the ends thereof the lugs or ears 12 adapted to be engaged in the It will be observed that this sheet can be formed substantially without waste.
The box members formed from these blanks are adapted to be combined in teletion having each of its four sides or sides and ends provided -with triple thickness,
'l with the additional E,thickness provided' at the corners by the ends 8 and 8 extending oppositely therefrom respectively, these ends or extensions being covered and held in place by the respective flaps 6 and 6 which extend in opposite directions from the respective corners and to or the greater part of the distance to the respective parts l and 1 As illustrated inFigs. 6 and 7, the flaps 6a are of such depth that -theyare adapted to be engaged and locked in the scores 5a of the body part la, so that such flaps are not only held in place but hold in place the locking extensions 8a of the parts 2a and provide a strut or reinforcing compression member joined to the outer members 2a with `the provision of strength as well as a firmly assembled construction. Preferably the flaps 6a are made of a, depth that will cause them to be sprung or bowed inwardly with the provision of additional means resisting lateral bending of the sides.
As illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9, the flaps 6b are each provided with one or more lugs 6 adapted to be sprung into the scores 5 joining the body member 1b to the outer member 2b with the provision of means for locking the parts 6b in place and thus holding in place the locking and extensions 8b of the parts 2", the parts 6*. being slightly bowed inwardly with provision of additional resistance to lateral'bending of the sides.
As illustrated in Figs. 10 and 11, the parts 6d are provided with ears or lugs 6 which extend through slots 5d in the body section 1c, thus locking in place aswell as covering the ends of the inturned side extensions 8e on the members 2.
Having described my invention, I claim:
A knock-down box member having a rectangular body section provided with arallel edge scores, s1de sections hinged to said body section along said scores; flaps hinged to said side sections and adapted to be engaged in said scores in bowed relation to said side sections; side sections hinged to said body section along lines 'at right angles to said scores, and extensions hinged to the 'ends of said side sections second named and adapted to be engaged between said flaps and side sections first named.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my name this 20th day of February, 1920.
