Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 1%, H1915.
. To all-107mm if m (13/ concern.
Be it known that we, MAURICE S. Downer and EVERETT J. VVooD, both citizens of the l nited States, residing at Castleton, Rensselaer county, New York, have jointly invented a new and Improved Paper Box, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan of the cut blank from which the box is made; Fig. 2 is a perspective showing the box partially erected; Fig. 3 is a perspective of the completed box; and Fig. 4c is a section on lines lV-IV of Fig. 3.
()ur invention relates to that class of paper boxes which are made of one sheet or blank of paper and which, by the folding of the parts, can be converted into a complete box without the use of fasteners other than that occasioned by the interlocking of the various portionsof the box.
Our invention consists of a box having all of its walls and its bottom comprised of at least two layers of paper and in the various features which are hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, 2 is the exterior bottom layer of the box, 3, '3' are outer side walls and 4, 4 are the inner side walls. The outer side walls 3, 3' have on their ends extensions 5, 5. Upon the ends of the inner side wall 4 adjacent the upper edges of the extensions 5 are the corner reinforcing tabs 6. The inner side wall 4' has attached thereto the inner bottom 7 of the box, and the bottom 7 has a strip 8 which is adapted to form part of the inner side Wall underlying the part 4.
The outer end walls 9, 9 have attached thereto the inner end walls 10, 10 and the end strips 11, 11'. Attached to the inner end walls 10, 10 are the projections 12,which reinforce two of the top corners of the box. The blank is suitably scored between the various portions enumerated, so that the parts of the box may be folded as required. If desired, the outer Wall 3 and inner wall 4 may be pasted together. 7
The blank, as is shown in Fig. 1,is folded into the completed box as follows: The outer side walls 3, 3 are folded into a position substantially at right angles to the exterior bottom layer 2 of the box and the extensions 5, 5, which constitute reinforcements for the ends of the box, are folded at right,
angles to the sides 3, 3. The inner side wall 4: is next folded down over the outer side 3 with its corner tabs 6 against the inner faces of the extensions 5. The outer end walls 9, 9 are then folded into vertical position, and the inner end walls 10, 10' are brought down ver the extensions 5, 5 in such manner that the end strips 11, l1 will lie along the bottom of the box, and the corner reinforcing projections 12 will bear against the upper corners of the wall 3. The inner side wall 4: is then folded. down over the projections 12 and the outer side wall 3, the inner bottom 7 over the outer bottom 2 and the end'strips 11, 11, and the strip 8 is brought to bear in a vertical position against the side wall 3 and the lower edge of the inner side wall 4.
It will thus be seen that the side walls and bottom of the box are comprised of two thicknesses of paper, that the end walls are comprised of three thicknesses, that all four upper corners are reinforced by either the tabs 6 or projections 12, that the end walls are locked by the bearing of the inner bottom 7 upon the end strips 11, 11, and that the bottom 7 is locked in position by the strip 8, which comprises the lower inner face of a side wall and bears against the inner and outer side walls 3 and 4 respectively.
What we claim is:
1. A paper box consisting of a single sheet or blank of paper having all of its walls and bottom of double thickness, each of two walls having supporting extensions adapted to project in between the thicknesses of the two adjacent walls, tabs for reinforcing the upper corners of the box and extending between the inner and outer walls at said corners, and one of the first mentioned walls having an extension forming an inner wall and the bottom of the box and engaging the opposite wall of the box.
2. A paper vbox comprised of a single sheet or blank of paper having all of its walls and bottom of double thicknesses, two of the walls having end flaps adapted to reinforce the other two walls, one of the said firstmentioned wallshaving attached thereto tabs to reinforce the corners made with the other two walls, the other two walls having strips adapted to lie on the inner face of the exterior bottom layer, and tabs to reinforce the corners made with the wall opposite to that to which the first mentioned tabs are attached; one of said firstmentioned walls having a portion extending therefrom and adapted to overlie the last mentioned of the other of the first mentioned walls.
