CHARLES FRANCIS JENKINS, OF WASHINGTON. DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR TO SINGLE SERVICE PACKAGE COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY. i
KNOCKDOW BOX.
@dietitian Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Det'. 28.. 1909.
v To all whom fit 'may concern.'
Be it known that I. CHARLES Fluxus JENKIAS, 'a citizen of the United States, re-
siding` at 'IVashingtoin in the District ofiv Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knockdown Boxes; and I do hereby declare the followingl to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled i ily lifted up to a position at right angles to in the art to which it appertains to ,make and use the same.
This invention relates to knock down boxes of sheet material, and has for its object the production of a box of this nature which will be cheap to manufacture, simple in construction and rigid and stift' in trans portation. l i To these ends the invention consists in the novel details of construction and combinations of parts more fully hereinafter described and particularly pointed out inthe claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this speeilic'ationz--Fig- 'u ure l represents a perspective View of the box with the side walls partially unfolded preparatory to knocking down for shipping; Fig. 2 represents a plan View of the parts knocked down and ready for shi nient; Fig. 3 represents an end view of t e` box complete; Fig. 4 is a detail fragmentary View of a corner of one of the end sections, and Fig. 5 a like view showing the other side of said corner.
l represents the side Walls of the box which may be of paper or any other'suitable sheet material; 2 represents lines of weakness or lines of scoring with which said walls l are provided; 3 represents slots or holes preferably elongated cut through said walls, and It represents end sections preferably made of two or more thicknesses of sheet material, as shown. y
The end sections 4 are partially cut away in their corners to form the shoulders 5,
and .leaving thinner projecting portions 6, as shown. These projecting portions o are about the same thickness, as are the widths of the holes 3, and they are adapted to extend through said holes, as best shown in Figs. Land 3, so that the *narrow strip likel portions 7vof the walls 1- abut against the shoulders 5 and thereby form a sti bracing for the box. The end sections 4 are preferably provided with the hinges 8, and the attachg bestillustrated in Fig. i the attachment ofthe hinges 8 to the sections nient of tlie'said hinges to the walls is located at a sufficient distance inside the edges of the walls as to permit the said sections to be `folded over and on top of each other, as That is to say,
4 is along a line t) which is at av considerable distance from the outer edge 10 of the said sections, which permits the same to be readf the walls l and-placed into the notches 3, ias will be readily understood. The free space ll between the line 9 and the edge 10 of each sect-ion represents the portion of the i sections 4 which is unattached `to the hinge,
and a like space l2 exists between the edge 18 of the walls and the line'll representing the limits of the attachment of the hinge 8 to said walls l. The two spaces 11 and 12 it will be readily seen enable the sections 4 to be readily lifted up, placed in position, or folded down, as shown in Eig.
15 represents any suitable fastener that may be attached to one edge of thevWalls 1, and as shown itA preferably consists of a gummed strip of cloth or paper which may be glued to the meeting edges of the said walls 1.
What I claim is l. In a knock down box, the combination lines adapting the same to be folded and with slots through said body portion along oppositeedges thereofaa pair of end closures composed of a plurality of thicknesses of material, one of said thicknesses being cut away to provide shoulders against which said body portion is adapted to restr and the other thickness being left'intact to provide projections adaptedtn einer said slots; and hinges securing said end sections to said body portion insidesaid slots and permitting said closures to fold on top of each other, substantially as described.
l 2. In a knock down box, the combination of a body portion provided With parallel weakened lines dividing said body into side Walls and into strip portions; said body portion also provided with a row of slots near each edge; a pair of end closures composed of a plurality of layers of material one of which is cut away to forni shoulders against which said strip portions rest while another layer is left intact to provide projecting portions passing through said slots;
walls and into strip portions; said body' ,portion also provided'with 'fn row of slots near each edge; a pair of end sections cons1st1ngr of two layers of material, one of which is cut away to provide shoulders vagainst which said strip portions rest while the other is left intact to provide. projecting portions passing through said slots; hinges secured to said sections eaving the spaces l1 on vsaid sections, andthevspaces 12'011 vsaid body portion; and agumrned fastening strip secured to said body portion, substantially as described.
