'This invention relates to an improved construction of the collapsible or knock-down tvp@- rThe invention is herein illustrated as embodied in a box of the two-piece type; that is to say, having separately formed top and bottom portions, b-ut it is to be understood that the invention is also applicable to onepiece boxes in which the cover portion 1s formed from the same piece, as the bottom portion.
lThis invention relates particularly to an improved and novel form of interlock at the corners of the box, whereby the side and end walls thereof may be brought into set up position with its parts engaged and interlocked by quick and simpleoperation to form a very durable and positive construction.
An object of this invention is to provide a box having an improved interlock which is produced by cutting and scoring a box blank from a rectangular piece of material without resorting to cut out portions, which involve waste, whereby all of the material of the blank enters into the box construction and serves as interlocking or bracing and strengthening portions therefor.
Another feature of the invention is that the interlocking of the parts and the setting up of the box is accomplished wholly through the mechanical operation of inter-fitting the parts provided on the blank, without the use of glue, or other fastening means.
A further object is that of providing reinforcement at the corners whereby a much stronger and more durable box is provided.
A'further object is to provide a boX which can be set up by a relatively simple and quick operation in which the interlocking is practically automatically effected by the manipulations of bringing the parts to their set up position, without requiring special handling at each corner, such as is often necessary, in introducing odd shape locking tabs in slots, etc.
These and other objects not specifically enumerated are contemplated for this invention, as will appear to one skilled in the art as the following description proceeds.
The following description may be more readily understood by referring to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a two-piece box, such as the top or the bottom,vconstructed in vaccordance with this invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged perspective View showing the interlocking flaps at one corner,
`in set up position;
Figure 3 is a cross sectional view, taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2, and looking in the direction of the arrows; and
Figure l shows the formation of the blank from which the box is made up.
In the accompanying drawings, and in the following description, one preferred form of the invention is illustrated but the applicant does not intend to be limited in any respect by the disclosure here given.
The scope of the invention may be determined from the appended claims, construed in the light of the present illustrated invention and with an appreciation of the advantages the invention produces therein.
By referring to the drawings, it will be noted that the box of this invention is formed from a blank of rectangular material comprising a bottom 10, side walls 11 and end walls l2. Scores 13 are provided in the material to separate the side walls from the bottom, and scores 14, are provided between the end walls 12 and the bot-tom. On the opposite edges of the side walls 11, fiaps l5 are provided connected by hinges 16, and of a shape defined by the cut 17. On the outer edges of end walls 13, flaps 18 are provided adapted to be inwardly folded along the hinge score 19, on top of the end walls 12, in the manner shown in Figure 3. l
The flaps 18 are provided with projections 20, on their outer edges located in a position to engage notches, hereinafter more fully described. The blank is also formed with hinge scores 21 and 22, which, in the blank, constitute a continuation of the hinge scores 13, which serve to produce smaller iaps 23 and 24, hinged to the flaps 15 and 18, respectively.
Flaps 23, are each provided with a slot 25, located adjacent the hinge score 2l and of a shape and size to receive the projections 20, when the box is in `set up position.
' This form of blank may be set up for use by lifting .the side walls 11, to vertical position and simultaneously bending the flaps 15, inwardly to the right angular positions relative thereto, takingl care to effect the movements in such manner that the flaps 23 will be brought in Contact with the bottom of the box so as to eifect their inward bending in contact with the bottom.
When the parts are thus positioned, they are held while the iirst end wall 12, is raised and the iap extension 18 folded inwardly in a manner to overlie the end wall12 and en- -close the flaps 15. During'the inward folding of the ap, extension 18, the flaps 24 on the ends thereof, are brought in engagement with the upper edges of the side walls 11, and are caused automatically, to be bent along the hinge lines 22, to bring them in bracing engagement against the inside of the side walls 11.
When the flap extension 18 is brought to its final position, by a slight manipulation, theprojections 20, are caused to enter the slots 25, whereby the walls are immediately locked, in set up position.l The opposite end of the box is then set up by a similar operation.
It will be readil p observed that the setting up can be effected y a very simple and quick operation.
It will be further observed that the corners of the box are doubly reinforced both by means of the flaps 15, which lie along the end walls, adjacent the corners, and b y iaps 24, which lie along the side walls. The end walls are in addition, of double strength, due to the over-lapping extensions 18.
The blank formation from which this box is formed, is of substantially rectangular vshape without requiring cut out portions,
makingfor waste of material. The blanks may be quickly and cheaply manufactured by simple cutting andscoring operations.
I claim:
1. A box of the character described formed from a blank having a center panel and side and end walls and flaps extending from the ends of the side walls, and other flaps carried by said first named flaps, cut from material within `the confines of said end walls, and adapted to lie against said centerpanel when the box is in set-up position.
2. A box of the character described, having a bottom, side and end walls, an extension on each end wall .and flaps on the ends of said side walls, said extensions being adapted for inward folding upon the end walls in amanner to enclose said flaps, other flaps carried by said irst named flaps positioned to lie against the bottom of said box and being formed for cooperative locking engagement with'the lower edge of said extensions.
3. A box of the character described, having a bottom, side and end walls, extensions on said end walls and flaps on the ends of said side walls, said extensions being adapted for inward folding upon the end walls in a manner to enclose said flaps, other aps carried by said rst named iaps positioned to lie against the bottom of said box and being formed for cooperative locking engagement with the lower edge of said extension, said extension having flaps on the end thereof for engaging the inside of said side walls.
4. A- box blank of substantially rectangular formation, having scoresv running the two directions thereof, toedefine a main panel and side and end walls therefor, extensions on said end walls and iaps on the ends of said side walls, cuts in said blank extending from the corners of said main panel to the edges of said blank in a. manner to provide small aps on said first named flaps, cut from said end walls, and other flaps on the ends of said extensions, cut from said first flaps, said small flaps being provided with slots and said extensions being provided with projections shaped and located for locking cooperation with said slots.
5. Abox of the character described, having a bottom, side and end walls, extensions on said end walls and flaps on the ends of said side walls, said extensions being adapted for inward folding upon the end walls in a manner to enclose said flaps, other flaps carried by said first named iaps adapted to lie against the bottom of said box and having slots therein, and projections on the lower end of said extensions for locking engagement with said slots.
i. A box of the character described, comprislng a bottom, side and end walls, an extension oneach of said end walls, rigid locking tongues on said extensions, flaps on opposite ends of each of said side walls, said side wall flaps adapted to lie against the inner face of the adjacent end wall when the box is set up, and at substantially right angles to their respective side walls, said extensions adapted for inward folding upon the end walls to enclose said side wall flaps, additional flap carried by each of said side wall flaps and being formed by cutting the same from the confines of said end walls, said additional flaps adapted to lie against the` bottom of the box and each having a slot therein, said locking tongues adapted to snap into said slots and extend substantially to the bottom of the box, when said extensions are folded into place, whereby the end wall, the end wall extension and the side wall flaps will be held in bpermanent box forming condition.
