This invention relates to folded boxes of the type comprising a body portlon and a hinged cover portion formed from a single blank.
The invention consists in providing a one piece boX wherein the lines of the sides of the box both interiorly and exteriorly are smooth; whereby great strength and rigidity is secured without the sacrifice of appearance; and further consists in a novel method of assembling and securing the parts from a single blank in their finished or set up position.
The invention also consists in certain new and original features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.
Although the novel features which are believed to be characteristic of this invention will be particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto, the invention itself, as to its objects and advantages, and the manner in which it may be carried out may be better understood by referring to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, in
which Fig. l is a plan view of a blank constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the box in partly set-up condition;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the set-up box with the cover open;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the set-up box with the cover closed Fig. 5 is a section taken in part on the line 55 of Fig. 3 but with the cover closed;
Fig. 6 is a broken perspective view of the box showing the arcuate tab;
Fig. 7 is a broken plan view of a blank showing a modified form of. tab; Fig. 8 is a broken perspective view of a portion of the box formed from the blank of Fig. 7 in partly set-up positition; -and Fig. 9 is a broken perspective view of the same box in completely set-up position but with the cover open. K
Like reference characters denote like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
In the following description and in the claims parts will be identified by specific names for convenience,but they are intended tobe as generic in their application to similar parts as the art will permit.
Referring more particularly to the drawings the box is shown as formed with a pair of sections 10 and 11 which for convenience A will be termed the body member and cover member respectively. Said members are joined by a connecting or back member 12. The blank is scored as at 13 to permit the back member to be folded into upstanding position with respect to body members 10 and is scored as at 14 to provide a hinge for the cover member. i
The blank is scored lengthwise to provide 5 outer side walls 15 and 16 for the body member 10 and the cover member 11 respectively and is scored transversely to provide front outer walls 17 and 18 respectively, the scoring of the body and cover being offset to permit the body to seat within the cover of the completed box. Walls 15 and 16 have side flaps or inner walls 19 and 20 attached thereto, adapted to be bent about scores 2]. and 22 respectively into engagement with the inner surface of said outer walls whereby walls of double thickness are obtained. Front walls 17 and 18 have flaps 23 and 24 respectively secured thereto for a similar purpose. The walls 15 and 16 may also be provided with tabs 25 and 26 respectively which are adapted to be bent into engagement with the inner surface of outer front walls 17 and 18 respectively and to be secured between same and the corresponding flaps when they are bent into overlapping relationship.
Back member 12 is provided with tabs 27 which may be rectangular or arcuate or any other desired shape. Walls 15 are cut out or recessed to receive said tabs.
In assembling the blank, adhesive may first be applied to side flaps 19 and 20 and front flaps 23 and 24. The adhesive may be omitted from the portion of flaps 19 with which tabs 27 will contact. Flaps 19 and 20 are then bent 95 over and secured to walls 15 and 16 and form the inner walls of the sides of the box. Walls 15 and 16 and front walls 17 and 18 are then bent upwardly at right angles to body 10 and cover 11 respectively and tabs 25 and 26 are 109 secured between front walls 17 "and 18 and their corresponding flaps or inner walls 23 and 24, and permanently maintain the box in set-up position. Thereafter, adhesive is applied to thetabs 27 and the box is then incondition illustrated in Fig. 2.
The set-up is completed by bending member 12 about score 13 so that tabs 27 extend on the outside of the double side walls. Said tabs are then pressed inwardly into the cut out portion of said walls and into engagement with inner wall 19 to which they permanently adhere.
In this position the tabs 27 are coextensive with the corresponding recesses in the outer walls and lie flush with the outer surfaces of said walls, and are either rectangular, arcuate or other shape. After the tab is secured in this position, pressure may be applied to the outer surface of the tab to hold it in engagement with the outer surface of the inner wall or flap 19 of the side wall while the adhesive material is hardening or setting. The box is then in the condition shown in Fig. 3.
Thereafter, the cover 11 is bent about score 14 to close the box, thereby causing the side to press against tabs 27 and maintain said tabs in position and thereby eliminate any tendency of the tabs to become loose or to spring outwardly before the adhesive material is firmly set. It is to be understood that the boxes may be stacked and pressure applied to the entire stack for this purpose.
The side 15 may have a straight edge 29 contacting with a similar edge 28 on tab 27. If desired, however, these edges may take the arcuate form illustrated in Fig. 6 in which the various parts are identical with Figs. 1-5 with the exception of tab 30 which is provided with an arcuate edge 31, seating in a complementary recess in side member 15. It will be noted that in this form the arcuate edge is concentric with the hinge crease 14 and accordinglypresents a neat pleasing appearance in addition to avoiding any corners or edges which could catch on the side 16 of the cover when the latter is closed.
. In Figs. 7-9 a modification is shown in which sides 15 are provided with extensions 32 which are adapted to extend upwardly a slight distance from the bottom 10 when the box is in closed position and to thereby avoid any opening between the bottom and the side member. Back 12 is provided with a. tab 33 which is adapted to seat in the recess 34 formed in side member 15. Said member 33 is preferably elongated in order to provide a greater surface for the adhesive material whereby the strength of the box is increased. The various other features of the box are identical with those illustrated in Figs. 1-5 and are given similar reference numerals.
It will be noted in the above described box that all of the tabs by'which the box is held in set-up position are either concealed or lie they do not detract from the appearance of the box and from a mechanical standpoint they are sufliciently protected to avoid possibility of accidentally catching on other objects. The double thiclmess of thesides and front walls increases the strength of the box and permits the same to be formed from a blank of thinner material than would otherwise be' required. 7
While certain novel features of the invention have been shown and described and are pointed out in the annexed claims, it will be understood that various omissions, substitutions and changes in the forms and details of the device illustrated and in ts operation may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention.
