To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, WALTER H. FAIR- CHILD and BERG HEINRIGHS, both residents of Anderson, in the county of Madison and State ofIndiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to boxes composed of a foldable blank of flexible material, such as corrugated board, and comparatively rigid box-ends which-are adapted to be secured together in assembling the box.

One object of the invention is to provide an improved box in which a flexible one piece blank is utilized to form the bottom, top, and sides of the box and which is provided with portions adapted to be secured to cleats on the box-ends, so that the'parts will be effectively secured together with avoidance of exposure of the cut edges of the flexible blanks at the box-ends.

A further object of the invention is to provide an improved box which consists primarily of a foldable blank and cleated ends, the blank being cut and creased at the factory and formed so that it can be readily and quickly applied to box-ends made at the place of use.

The invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter set forth and more particularly described in claims at the conclusion hereof.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective of a box embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a transverse section and Fig. 4 is a plan of the box blank.

The improved box comprises a pair of end-boards 6 having marginal cleats 7 on the top, bottom, front and back thereof. The ends of the cleats are mitered and their outer edges are flush with the edges of the endboards 6. These cleats are secured to the end-boards, usually by nails, and the ends and cleats reinforced together form boxends of suflicient rigidity for use with a flexible body-blank.

The front, back, top and bottom of the box are formed by a blank consisting of a single piece of flexible material, such as corrugated board. The blank for forming these portions of the box is shown in Fig. 4 and comprises a portion 8 to form the front of the box, a contiguous portion 9 to form Specification of Letters Patent.

The blank is creased on lines 14 between the front, bottom, back, top and flap 12 to facilitate the folding of the blank around the ends and to form straight corners. Each of the

8, 9, 10 and 11 of the blank are provided with foldable end-portions 15 having their ends mitered, as at 16, which form foldable end fiaps adapted to fit against and cover the outer side of the cleats 7 of the box-ends, respectively. Each flap 15 is also provided with-an extension 17 which is foldable inwardly at right angles and against the inner edge of one of the cleats 7 Between each end-flap 15 and the body-portion on which it is formed, the blank is creased on lines 18, to facilitate the folding of the flap around the outer corner of the cleat and to form a straight corner, and the blank is also creased on lines 19 between each flap 15 and extension 17, to form straight corners and facilitate the folding of the extension around the inner corner of the cleat and the folding of the extension snugly against the inner edge of the cleat.

In practice, the corrugated board box blanks are cut and creased at the factory and the box-ends are usually assembled at the place where the boxes are used. This is done, because the blanks, when fiat or before being folded, can be easily shipped and, because the cleated box-ends can be usually obtained and made of the desired size at the place where the boxes are used.

To assemble the box, the front, bottom and back are secured to the outer edges of the box-ends by nails, as indicated at 20. Next, the flaps 15, which have mitered ends, so their edges will be contiguous when the body portions are secured to the box ends, are folded around the cleats, and the extensions 17 are folded against the inner edges of the These extensions are secured to inner edges of the cleats by nails, as indicated at 21. When the box has been filled, the coverwill be folded into closed position and the flap-extensions 17 thereon will be folded around and nailed to the inner edges of the top cleats of the box-ends respectively, and the flap 12 secured to the front of the box in any suitable manner, for example, by a closure strip 22, which is pasted over a portion of the front of the box and a portion of the flap 12.

It will be observed that when the box is made up and closed, there are no exposed cut edges of the corrugated board, the blank being folded around the outer and inner corners of the cleats and that the edges of .the flap-extensions 17 are disposed inwardly of the cleats and adjacent the ends 6. This formation results in secure attachment of the box-ends to the box-blanks and avoids the use of cut edges of the blank at the outside of the box. It has been found, in prac tice, that if the flaps have cut edges at the .outer side of the cleats, these edges sometimes become caught in handling the box, which will cause tearing of the corrugated board and then the' box will be materially weakened as a whole.

The box can be produced at a low cost and easily shipped in knocked-down form and readily assembled.

The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth, since these may be modified within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

Having thus described the invention, what We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A box comprising ends having marginal cleats thereon and a body formed of foldable material having toldable integral end flaps fitting around the outside of the cleats and extensions on the flaps foldable around the inner edges of the cleats and secured thereto.

2. A-box comprising ends having outside marginal cleats thereon and a body formed of ,foldable material and having foldable end-flaps fitting around the outer sides of the cleats and having extensions foldable against the exposed inner edges of the cleats and secured thereto.

3. A box comprising ends having outside marginal cleats thereon and a body formed of foldable material and having integral foldable end-flaps fitting around the outer sides of the cleats and integral extensions on the flaps foldable against the inner edges of the cleats and secured thereto, the material being creased on the lines of the folds for the flaps and the extensions to fold around the corners of the cleats.
