FOLDING PAPER BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 680,105, dated August 6, 1901.
Application filed May 4, 1901. Serial No. 58,827. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK N. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Paper Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheaply-constructed folding box formed in one piece; and it consists in the improved form of construction, as hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved folding box. Fig. 2 represents a plan view of the cut-out blank from which the box is folded. Fig. 3 represents a top view of the box when the attaching-flaps are nearly folded together for locking engagement.
In the drawings, A, Fig. 1, represents the completed box, and B, Fig. 2, the outspread blank from which the box is to be folded, the said blank being provided with the slits a a and b b and with suitably-creased foldinglines. The folding flaps c and def the blank are provided at their outer ends e 6 with the notches or slits f f, extending in the same direction and adapted for locking engagement with each other.
In folding the blank B to form the box A, as shown in Fig. 1, the flap g may be first turned from a horizontal to an upright position at the folding-crease 1, then the flap It turned upward at the folding-crease 2, inward at the folding-crease 3, and downward over the upper edge of the upturned flap g at the folding-crease 4, then the opposite flaps c and cl turned upward at the folding-creases 5 5 and inward at the folding-creases 6 6, the
portions 0 and d of the flaps c and 61 passing under the previously-folded flap h, then the flaps candd are to be folded together at the folding-creases 7 7 and the folding-creases 8 8, as shown in Fig. 8, and their ends e e locked together by means of the notches f f, as shown in Fig. 1 and indicated by the dotted lines, the box being thus formed complete.
The ends of the flaps c and d, which fold together at the front side of the box, are cut away at the points i 'i, so that when the flaps are folded together a thumb-notch j will be formed, as shown in Fig. 1, through which ready access may be had to the downwardlyturned portion Z of the folding flap h for opening the box.
Instead of folding the rear ends of the flaps c and d at the outer side of the covering-flap h, as above stated, they may be folded to en gagement at the inner side of the same, which will allow greater freedom for the opening swing of the covering-flap.
I claim as my invention In a folding box, the combination of the flaps g and h, and c and d, turned upward from the bottom 70 of the box, the said flaps c and d being provided with the lockingnotches f, f, and also cut away at the points ,1, t', to form a thumb-notch j, when the said flaps are locked together at the front outer side of the box, whereby ready access may be had to the inclosed downwardly-turned portion Z of the covering-flap h, for opening the box; substantially as described.
