PATENT GEEIO HIMSELF, OF SAME PAPER BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,188, dated April 8, 1890; Application filed July 29, 1889. Serial No. 319,043. (No model.)
- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. RIEDELL, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Paper Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Myinvention relates to an improved paper box designed more particularly for cigarettes,
' matches, and other small articles; but it may be made on a large scale, if desired.
The invention consists, mainly, in such construction of the box that its contents may be removed at one side thereof by opening the main top or cover and the outer side wall and also two side flaps.
The invention also consists in the special features of construction of the box, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my new box as it appears when closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the covers open. Fig. 3 shows the box entirely open. Fig. 4. shows the form of the blank, and Fig. 5 shows a modified form of fastening. I
The box A is formed with a partial lid or cover B and an overlapping and complete cover 0, which latter is an extension of the drop-wall D. The partial cover B is an extension of the back wall E, and this and wall D are opposite extensions of the main bottom F. In front of the wall E is an inner wall E, composed of the flaps a a, which. in Fig. 3 are held to each other by a fastening b. In Figs. .1 and 2 they are fastened to each other and to the wall E by a fastening c-an eyelet in this instance. In front of the wall D is an inner wall D, composed of flaps d, which open out over the wall D and main cover 0 to permit the box to be filled or permit its contents to be removed at the side of the box.
The main opening to the box is at the top, which is of less extent than the area of the box, the same being partially closed by the end flaps G G, which are extensions of the end walls H H, as shown clearly in Fig. 2.
hen the box is closed, the main cover 0 is fastened to the partial cover B by a suitable fastening device. In Figs. 1 and 2 the fastening consists of a button 6, attached to the partial cover B, and the slot 6 in the edge of the cover 0. The slot 6 is cut so as to form the small tab 6 by which the box may be readily opened. In Fig. 5 the covers are secured by a tab f in the partial cover B, adapted to pass through a slot f in the overlapping cover 0, as clearly shown; but any suitable fastening may be used.
The blank L is clearly shown in Fig. 4. It is nearly square in general outline and cut at Z Z Z Z and scored at m m m m to form the bottom F. The cuts Z Z Z 1 form the flaps d d and a a, and the scores m m are extended across these flaps, as shown. The blank is also scored at W m to bend the top flaps G G, and also at m m to bend the covers B C from the main front and rear walls. By forming the box in this manner the end flaps G G retain the cigarettes, matches, or other articles by their ends only and expose nearly the whole to view when the box is open. By opening the cover 0 and front drop wall D and swinging the flaps cl outward the contents of the box may be taken out at the edge of the box.
When the box is closed, it is very tight, to prevent the escape of the aroma of the tobacco, and is very firm.
Having thus described myinvention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, a paper box having its main body formed with an opening at the top of less extent than the area of the box, and having cover B, overlapping cover 0, front drop wall D, and flaps d, substantially as shown and described.
2. The box herein shown and described, consisting of the main bottom F, end walls H, having flaps G G and a (Z, rear outer wall E,
having the partial cover 13, main cover C, and formed with the Lab (4, substantially as and front (h'opWaH D, substantially as deshown and described.
scribed. T 1 a 3. The box comprising a main bottom or JOHB RHLDELL' body F and partial cover B, having the but- \Vitnesses:
ton 8 applied thereto, in combination with CHARLES A. MCCORMICK,
the main overlapping cover 0, slotted at e H. A. \VEST.
