CHARLES F. HAMEL, OF TOLEDO, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO ADOLPH J.
GENDRON, OF
TOLEDO, OHIO.
HOLDER FOR TOOTHPICKS AND SIMILAR ARTlCLES.
Application filed June 16,
T ctZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHARLns F. HAMEL, a
' citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo,
in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Holders for Toothpicks and Similar Articles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a holder for toothpicks, matches, and the like, and is designed to furnish a holder which is exceedingly cheap and simple and which may be formed of a single piece of cardboard or similar material secured by a single staple or fastener. I attain these objects by means of the devices and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan of the blank from which my holder is made; Fig. 2, a side view of my holder filled with toothpicks and with the tuck opened, and Fig. 3 the same with the tuck in closed position.
Like numerals of reference represent like parts throughout the drawings.
My holder is designed to be made at a minimum cost, to present a particularly neat appearance, and with a view to the provision of a number of plain uninterrupted surfaces designed to receive advertising-cards or other printed matter. To this end the holder is formed from a single piece of stiff paper or other suitable material having the characteristics or shape to be hereinafter described.
The blank from which the article is formed consists of an elongated strip having formed near one end of the same a weakened line 7 and a second weakened line 10 located substantially midway between the first weakened line and the opposite end of the strip. The part 1 of the strip between the lines 710 is intended to form the back of the holder, the part 6 below the line 7 constitutes a flap intended to permanently close the lower end of the pocket of the holder, and the part 9 above the line 10 constitutes a flap designed to close the open end of the pocket and to form substantially the front of the holder when the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 26, 1905.
1904. Serial No. 212,850.
flap is closed. The lower end of this flap is preferably arranged to be passed beneath the upper edge of the flap 6, so as to be detachably retained in place by the latter. The strip is provided upon its opposite sides with integral lateral extensions 2 4c, the lower edges of which are substantially in the plane or coincident with the line 7 and the upper edges of which are below the plane of line 10. The inner edges of these extensions are defined by weakened lines 3 4, upon which lines the extensions are intended to be folded. The extension 4 is of materially less width than the part 1, being, in fact, substantially the same width as the flap 6, while the extension 2 is of substantially the full width of the part 1. The extensions 2 t are designed to be folded over on the lines 3 5 to form the front of the pocket of the holder, and the extension 2 is superimposed upon the extension 4:, with its longitudinal edge substantially coincident with the edge ofthe strip opposite to that from which the extension 2 projects or coincident with the edge formed at the weakened line 5 when the flap 4 is bent over. The flap 6 is then bent up over the superimposed extensions 2 4: and the parts held together by any suitable securing means, as a staple 8.
By reason of the fact that the outer longitudinal edge of the extension 2 is coincident with the opposite edge of the strip 1, from which the extension 2 projects, the pocket formed by the part 1 and the flaps 2 4 is very neat in appearance and particularly adapted for the reception of ad vertising-cards or other printed matter by reason of the fact that the front of the pocket is uninterrupted or perfectly plain and smooth, so that an advertisingcard of the full width of the holder may be printed upon this single flap.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a package or holder of the character described made from a single blank and comprising an elongated strip having a weakened line near one end of the same defining a bottom flap, a weakened line substantially midway of its length defining the back of the holder and a front closing flap, of substantially the full length of the back, lateral extensions upon opposite sides of the strip having their upper edges adistance below said second weakened line, one
of said extensions being of materially less Width than the back of the holder, and the other extension being of substantially the full Width of the back of the holder, said extensions being bent over with the Wider one superimposed upon the narrower one to form the front of the pocket of the holder, in Which the outer longitudinal edge of the Wider extension is substantially coincident With the' opposite edge of the strip from which said Wider extension projects, thereby presenting an uninterrupted front face or front Wall to the pocket, said first-named flap being bent over upon said superimposed extensions and secured thereto, and said second flap being bent over on the weakened line to form the front of the closed holder, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
CHARLES F. HAMEL. Witnesses:
