Be it known that I, GEORGE BODEN, of l/Vatertown, county of Litchfield, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mailing-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same, to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to that class of boxes which are commonly used in sending small articles by mail, and is especially adapted for use in boxes which are made in two parts, one of which is constructed to slide within the other part, and has for its object to provide such a box with means whereby it may be conveniently used for returning or remailing to the original sender without the employment of a wrapper.

A further object is to provide means for fastening the two sliding sections of the box in closed position.

To that end the invention consists in certain features of construction and arrangement to be hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is an end view of the body portion provided with two flaps which are shown in extended position. Fig. 2 is an end view of the cover. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the body portion. Fig. 4. is a side elevation of the cover. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the box partly closed wit-h one of the flaps folded inside the cover and the other folded on to the outside of said cover.

A represents the body portion and B the cover of a well-known form of box in which the body portion is constructed to slide within the cover and may be made of any suitable material, such as paste-board, and of any desired form or shape. Secured to one end of the body portion A is an end piece a which is made of such a length as to form the flap pieces C and D which are adapted to be folded down upon said body portion A, or upon the outside of the cover B when the cover is on the body portion, as desired. A fastener b projecting from the cover B and arranged to pass through perforations 0 or d in the flaps G and D respectively, when either of said flaps are exposed on the outside of the cover B,'serv'es to hold said exposed flap against said cover and also to hold the box closed.

It is obvious that by placing the name and address of the party to whom the box is to be originally sent on the flap C and the name and address of the party to whom the box is to be remailed upon the flap D, as shown in the drawings, the former address will be exposed to view and the latter concealed when the parts are folded, as shown in Fig. 5, and to reverse the position of said addresses it is simply necessary to withdraw the box from the cover and turn it over so that the flaps C and D will occupy the reverse position from that shown in Fig. 5.

I do not wish to limit myself to the particular manner of securing the flaps C and D to the body portion shown in the drawings as they may be made separate from the end portion a and secured thereto by means of hinge joints formed by strips of cloth in a well-known manner, or they may be secured in other well-known ways without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. An article of the character described comprising two telescoping members, one of said members being provided with two folding flaps, each of said flaps being adapted to receive an address and to be folded either inside or outside of the outer member, substantially as described.

2. A mailing-box comprising two telescoping members, each of said members being closed at one end, and one of said members being provided adjacent its closed end with a folding-flap adapted to receive an address and to be folded either inside or out-side of the other member, substantially as described.

3. A mailing-box comprising two telescoping members, each of said members being open at one end, and one of said members being provided adjacent its closed end with two folding flaps, each of said flaps being adapted to receive an address and to be folded either inside or outside of the other member, substantially as described.

4. A mailing-box comprising two telescoping members, each of said members being closed at one end, and one of said members being provided adjacent its closed end with a folding flap adapted to receive an address,

folded either inside or outside of the other 10 member and means for securing either of said flaps to said other member to hold the tWo members in closed position, substantially as described.
