SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 741,400, dated October 13, 1903.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. HARRING- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in a Combined Music-Roll and Book-Carrier, of which the following is a complete specification.

My invention has relation to a device for carrying books, sheet-music, Jae, which shall combine in one instrumentality the requisite means for carrying stilt-backed books, large books with soft covers, sheet-music, and similar articles whose general configuration agrees substantially with those mentioned.

The objects of myinvention are to produce a carrying device which is capable of being changed with slight effort and substantially instantaneously from a device for carrying a large stiff-backed book to one adapted to carry a large book with a soft cover folded once and also to be changed into suitable shape for carrying soft-covered sheet-music.

Another object of myinvention is to so construct this carrying device that when adapted for carrying one style of book or pamphlet it will in no wise detract from the general appearance and adaptability for being changed into a device for carrying a book or books of a difierent size.

A'final object is to construct a book-carrying device of great simplicity capable of being produced with little expense and whose universal use will recommend it to a person needing such a device.

To the aforesaid objects my invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described and then specifically claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

In the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference-numerals indicate like parts in the different figures, Figure 1 is a plan view of mydevice previous to folding, showingthe fastening devices thereon and their location. Fig. 2 represents an inside view of my device during the process of adaptin it for carrying a large stiif-covercd book. Fig. 3 shows my device with a stifi-covered book in position ready for transportation. Fig. 4. shows later.

In the drawings, 1 is a large smooth sheet of leather, cloth, or similar substance of tough material capable of repeated foldings without cracking or abrasion to the material of which it is composed; but the material is not a necessary element of my invention. On the opposite side from that shown in Fig. l and near one end is placed a handle 2, which is held in place by straps3, sewed or otherwise fastened to the main body of the holder.

Into the body 1 of the holder are placed a considerable number of fastening devices whose make-up is that commonly used in fastoning the wrist portion of kid gloves and consists of a head or male portion and a corresponding socket or female portion; but the general make-up of these fastenings is of but secondary importance in my construction.

Near the upper end of Fig. l of the body 1 are three sockets i et 4. Below this and oppositely disposed are similar sockets 5, one of which is concealed in Fig. 1 by a strap, whose object will be described later. Immediately below the sockets 5 are two loose pieces 6 7 of a material similar to the material of which the body portion 1 is composed. In the corners of the piece 6 are studs 8, 9, 10, and 11, with the stud portion projecting toward the body portion 1, and in the piece 7 are similar studs 12, 13, 14, and 15.

Immediately under the studs 10 and 15 in the body portion 1 are sockets for the reception of these studs; but as they are effectually hidden by the pieces 6 7 no number is given to them. In these sockets, into which the studs 10 and 15 enter, the pieces 6 7 are arranged to pivot and swing in a manner to be described Immediately below the pieces 6 7 are three male studs 16 16 16, and below these on either side and adjacent to the sides of the body portion 1 are sockets 17 17 and below these similar sockets 18 18, and at the bottom are three studs 19 19 19, with their studs projecting on the opposite side of the cover. All

the male studs and likewise the female studs are of equal size and dimensions, so that any male stud will enter a corresponding female iii stud and there fit and be retained in whatever position the holder is placed.

Attached to one of the sockets 5 for temporary holding is a strap 20 of a material similar to that of which the body portion 1 is composed and having at one end a number of studs 21 and at the opposite end a socket 22. This strap 20 is shown as temporarily retained in position in Fig. 1.

In order to convert this holder, whose flexibility has already been described, into a position capable of carrying a stifi-covered wide book, I first swing the strip 6 upward until the stud 11 is in a position to be inserted in the socket 5 on the left-hand side of the holder, and at the same time I swing the piece 7 on the stud 15 as a pivot until the stud 14 is in a position to enter and be fastened into the socket 5 on the right-hand side of the holder. I then lay the holder on some flat surface, as a table, and bend in the pieces 6 7 around the books and bring up the lower portion of the holder, so that the left socket 17 will inclose the stud 8 and the left socket 18 fasten over the stud 9, and on, the right side the socket 17 Willinclose the stud l3 and the right socket 18 inclose the stud 12. I then carry the bottom portion of the folder upward and fasten the sockets 4 4 4 over the studs 19 19 19, and the device will assume the position shown in Fig. 3.

In order to adapt this holder to carrying wide books, such as orchestral music-books, I permit the pieces 6 7 to remain in the position shown in Fig. l and lay the book on top of the holder 1, with its bottom about on a line of the lower lines of the pieces 6 7. I then fold upward the lower portion of the I 'mnaoo holder until nearly to the sockets 4 4 4 and then bend-this folded part in the middle, so as to bring the studs 16 16 1b to substantially the top of the package. I then fold over from above the upper portion of the holder 1 and inclose the studs 16 16 16 with the sockets 4 4 4, and the result will be a package in substantially the shape shown in Fig. 4.

When it is desired to carry sheet-music in a roll, the music is first rolled up, and the body portion 1 is rolled around it until a firm compact roll has been made, and the strap 20 is then placed around the roll under the handie 2 and one of the studs 21 inserted in the socket 22, thus causing the strap 20 to become a neat serviceable binder for the package.

IVhatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A device of the class specified, which consists of a sheet of suitable material provided with fastening devices placed at the opposite ends thereof and adapted to cooperate to retain the device in such a position that onehalf of its length is available for use, other fastening devices placed about midway of the ends and adapted to cooperate with the fastening devices on one end to retain the device in position when folded into one-quarter of its length, and means to retain said device when formed into a roll.
