GARMENT-FORM.
Application filed May 20, 1915.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. HOUGH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Oneida, in the county of Madison, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garment-Forms, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain improvements in garment forms and upon which the waist or coat portion of a garment is adapted to be mounted for display or for transference in suitable boxes, to prevent crushing or wrinkling of the garment and to give the same somewhat the shape of a wearer for who-m it may be adapted, and the same is particularly applicablefor the support of the waist of a burial garment vfor women.
The primary object is to produce a form which shall be relatively light, flexible and of inexpensive manufacture, and yet of sufficient strength and rigidity to shape the garment and retain such shape under ordinary conditions of transfer and handling, and to present the same in the most desirable conditio-n as a display to customers or as an exhibit or sample.
Other objects and uses will appear from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, 4in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a garment upon the form, suitably packed for shipment, display, etc. Fig. 2 is a cross section on line 2 2, Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a front view of the form. Fig. i is a view of the blank from which the front po-rtion of the form is made. Fig. 5, 6, 7 and 8 are views of the remaining blanks constituting the form.
The blank 1-, preferably of cardboard, paper-board, or other suitable material, which constitutes the front of the form is slit inwardly along lines Q* and -3-, and 4- and 5w from its upper and lower edges, respectively, the slits Q-,- and -3- being substantially parallel, while the slits -4- and 5 diverge slightly as they extend inwardly. The blank is also slit inwardly from its side edges along lines 6 and -7-, respectively. The edges adjacent each of these slits are then overlapped and secured in overlapping position, thereby causing the blank to assume a curved or Specication of Letters Patent.

dished shape, best Seen in Fig. 2, and preferably, as indicated in Fig. 3, they edge 8- is lapped over the edge -9-, the edge -1O` is lapped over the edge -l1-, the edge 12- is lapped over the edge 1S- until the corner of edge 12fpractically coincides with the corner or angular portion let-of the blank 1. The edge l5- is lapped over the edge -Yl6-, the edge -l7- is lapped over the edge 18-, and the edge -19- is lapped over the edge -20i-, until the corner of edge 19.- practically coincides with the corner or angular portion @1* of the blank -1-. This particular arrangement of overlapping edges may be reversed with equal efficiency and varied, without materially affecting the result.
The parts may be secured in overlapping position in any suitable manner, or byany suitable substance, as an adhesiife.
The rear portion of the form comprises a flat blank 9.2-- of cardboard or other suitable material, as best shown in Fig. 8, and is secured at the shoulder portions -28- and -2l to the parts 25- and 2G- of the front portion -1- by means of shoulder pieces -27-, best shown in Figs. 3 and 5. These pieces are preferably of cardboard or other suitable material, and the edge -28- is secured to the rear portion and the obliquely disposed edge -29- is secured to the front' portion with the edge -30- disposed upon the inner side to properly shape the shoulder portion.
The corners 3land S2- of the rback -22- are secured, respectively, to the corners 33- and 3dof the front by means of adhesive or otherwise, and preferably the width of the rear portion at the bottom is somewhat less than the width of the front portion at its bottom, so thatwhen the respective corners of these parts are secured together the front portion is caused to bulge slightly. The body of the form is then complete with the addition of the reinforcing brace -35-, best shown in Figs. 2 and 6, and adapted to space the upper parts of the front and rear portions of the form and for this purpose the edges -36- and -37- of the reinforcing piece are deflected and secured respectively to the front and rear portions by suitable adhesive or otherwise. The waist or other garment may then be placed upon the form andy for the purpose of properly supporting the collar thereof, a suitable shaping member -38- is provided, the blank from which the same is made being shown in F ig. 7, the same when bent in circular form adapted to be positioned within and to support the collar -39- of a waist A0- and, to prevent accidental displacement one end of the shaping member is inserted between the overlapping rear portions of the collar. rfhe front portion -ilrests against the front -1- of the form and against the brace -35- and is thereby held in desired position.
The form having the garment thereon is adapted to be placed for shipment and eX- hibit in a suitable boX 42- and to be secured thereto by sewing or otherwise. The skirt portion of the garment may be folded and placed under the form.
Although I have shown one particular construction, shape and arrangement of parts and completed structure, I do not desire to limit myself to the same, as many changes may be made in the details of construction, form and arrangement of the parts, and in the shape, size, ete. of the completed structure, without departing from the spirit of this invention as set forth in the appended claims.
I'Vhat I claim is:
l. A form for garments comprising a front blank of iexible material having vertical slits at its upper and lower edges, and lateral slits at its side edges, the portions adjacent the slits overlapped and secured together to forni a dished front, a separate flat back, the lower corners of the dished front secured to the lower corners of the flat back, the lower edges of the front and back being spaced at intermediate points, and spaced gusset shaped shoulder pieces connecting and spacing the dished front and the flat back.
2. A form for garments comprising a front blank of flexible material having vertical slits at its upper and lower edges, and lateral slits at its side edges, the portions adjacent the slits overlapped and secured together to form a dished front, a separate flat back having an upper central portion and downwardly sloping edge portions upon opposite sides of said central portion, the
lower corners of the dished front secured to the lower corners of the flat back, the lower edges of the front and back being spaced at intermediate points, and spaced gusset shaped shoulder pieces connecting and spacing the downwardly sloping edge portions of the back and the upper edge of the dished front.
3. A form for garments comprising a front blank of flexible material having vertical slits at its upper and lower edges, and lateral slits at its side edges, the portions adjacent the slits overlapped and secured together to form a dished front, a separate lat back having an upper central portion extending above the upper edge of the dished front, and downwardly sloping upper edge portions upon opposite sides of said central portion, the lower corners of said dished front secured to the lower corners of the fiat back, spaced gusset shaped shoulder pieces connecting and spacing the downwardly sloping edge portions of the Hat back and the upper edge portions of the dished front, and a brace disposed between and connected to the flat back and the dished front intermediate the shoulder pieces.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of February, 1915.
