I UNITED STATES v PATENT. O FICE.
YVILLIAh/I N. BREIVER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
BOOK OR CASE FOR EXHIBITING GOODS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,733, dated March 1, 1892.
Application filed October 8, 1891. Serial No. 408,137- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that/I, WILLIAM N. BREWER, of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Books or Cases for Exhibiting Goods; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in books or cases for exhibiting goodssuch, for
instance, as chewing-gum; and it consists in certain features of construction and in combination ofparts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a book, open or unfolded, embodying my invention. Figs. 2, 3, '4, 5, 6, and 7 show the manner of construction.
Myimproved book for exhibiting goods comprises a cover A and one or more cases B,the latter being mounted upon a suitable backing O, secured to cover A, or, if there be but one case B, the same may be attached directly to the cover of the book.
A preferable construction of case B is as follows: A piece D of flexible material and somewhat elasticsuch as certain kinds of cloth or leather, preferably the latteris cut to the form shown in solid lines, Fig. 2, with an opening D in the center. WVe will suppose that Fig. 2 shows the back side of piece D,the end and side sections d d-of which are to be folded backward on the dotted lines, as hereinafter described, leaving sections d d on the face side of piece 0. Preparatory to the folding of sections (1 d, as aforesaid, strips of thick paper or-thin pasteboard are provided, two E E of a size and form adapted to approximately coincide with end sections d of piece D and two F F approximating in size and form sections 61' of piece D. These strips are then pasted or otherwise attached to the back side of the respective corresponding sections'd d of piece D, as shown in Fig. 3. A
piece of paper G of proper size to approxi-- mately cover opening D andsections (Z d of piece D aforesaid is next provided and placed inposition,as shown in Fig. 3. Sections d d of piece D,with strips E F attached, are then folded backward, as shown in Fig. 4, and strips E F pasted or glued to said paper. Sections d d, with strips E Fattached, having been thus folded and secured, and case B thus far completed, a piece of paper or cloth H, as shown in Fig. et, is pasted or glued over the back of the case. In Figs. 3 and at portions of parts G and H are partly broken away to more clearly show the construction.
If the book comprises several cases B, the latter are mounted on a suitable backing I in common and such backing secured to the cover of the book. (See Fig. 1.)
If the book comprises but a single case B, the latter can be mounted directly on the inner surface of the cover of the book.
The goods K to be exhibited are permanently attached to a flexible or pliable pad J of any suitable material, (see Fig. 6,) and by slightly raising and pressing outward the inner ends of the side sections 61 of the face side of the case at the central portion thereof and bowing pad J, with attached goods, as shown in Fig. 7, the latter can be readily inserted and slipped into position in case B, and
by the construction hereinbefore described side sections 01 are rendered sufficiently elastic to firmly hold said pad and attached goods in'place within the case.
The goods to be exhibited are intended to remain in the case until they have become soiled or new goods are to be exhibited, and it will be observed that by my improved construction, as hereinbefore described, a strong and durable case is provided and the old goods can readily be removed and new goods inserted without in any wise mutilating or impairing the exhibiting-case.
That I claim is V 1. In a book for exhibiting goods, comprising one or more open cases, the combination, with such case or cases, of a pliable or flexible pad adapted to be slid into such case or cases and having attached the goods to be exhibited, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a book for exhibiting goods, comprising one or more open cases secured to a suit able backing and the face side of such case In testimony 'whereof I sign this specification, in the presence of two witnesses, this21st day of September, 1891.
WILLIAM N. BREWER.
