EUGENE LOW, OF REFUGIO, TEXAS.
ENVELOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 28, 1911.
Application filed October 14, 1909. Serial No. 522,524.
T o all 'whom it may concern:
Be it lmown that I, EUGENE Low, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Refugio, in the county of Refugio and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Envelop, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to envelops for iling documents and the like, and relates more particularly to a device of this class comprising a back, and a closing iiap having means whereby it can be held closed in a plurality of positions relative to the envelop, so that the envelop is capable of ad'- justment to different sizes.
The objectof the invention is to provide a simple, strong and inexpensive envelop for filing and like purposes, in which documents and other articles can be securely kept and preserved for future reference, which can be adjusted to diierent sizes, so that various numbers of documents can be kept therein, which can be manipulated rapidly and easily, and which is inexpensive to manufacture.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts. in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the envelop open; Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3-8 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a similar view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a plan view of one end of an envelop of modified form; and Fig. 6 is a transverse section on the line 6 6 of Fig. 5.
Before proceeding to a more detailed explanation of my invention, it should be clearly understood that while the device is particularly useful as a filing wrapper or cover for preserving documents and the like for future reference, it can also be advantageously employed for other purposes in which it is necessary or desirable to provide a strong and easily manipulated envelop or cover for articles of different kinds. I prefer to fashion the device from strong paper suitably reinforced, as will appear more clearly hereinafter, though any other material adapted for the ployed.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I provide an envelop having a back or body portion 10 of suitable form and dimensions, and having secured thereto by gluing or the like, at the ends, auxiliary closing flaps 11 arranged to fold inwardly and to be superposed, as is shown most clearly in Fig. 2, so that they assist inV retaining the documents or other articles in place within the envelop, and prevent them from escaping at the ends when the envelop is closed. At the sides, the envelop back has integrally or otherwise associated therewith, further closing flaps consisting respectively of the inner closing lap l2 and the outer closing flap 13. The envelop body and the flaps 12 and 13 are preferably fashioned from a single sheet of paper or the like of one or more thicknesses, depending upon the service for which the envelop is intended.
The inner closing flap has, near the ends, lines of perforations 14 which are preferably elongated. At the ends, this flap has reinforcing strips 15 of any suitable material, such for example, as linen, thin metal or the like. The strips are secured to the Hap by gluing or in any other suitable manner, and also having perforations coinciding with the perforations of the flap. They may be applied at one or both faces of the flap.
The outer closing Hap 13 has the free edge 16 folded back upon itself and secured in any suitable manner, for example, by gluing, or as shown in the drawings, by means of rivets 17. By thus folding back the edge of the flap the latter is reinforced against wear. The flap has at the corners, cutaway portions 18 at which are arranged tongues 19, extending in the direction of the length of the flap and fashioned from any suitable material. Preferably they are formed by rounded extremities of a strip of spring metal 20, arranged underneath the folded edge of the flap and secured in place by means of rivets 21. The tongues are adapted to be inserted in the openings 14 to hold the flaps closed as is shown in Figs. 1 and 4. By providing a number of openings the flap can be adjusted to different sizes. The free, longitudinal edge 22 of the inner closing flap 12-the lattery being of greater width than the back 10-may be normally folded back against the flap or may be positioned at an angle thereto, as is shown most clearly purpose can be emin Fig. l, whereby the capacity of the envelop can be increased.
In the modified form of the invention shown in Figs. 5 and 6, I provide an inner` closing flap 23 similar to the flap l2, and an outer closing flap 24 similar to the closing flap 13 and likewise provided with cutaway corners 25 and flexible tongues 26. The flap 23 is provided with a series of spaced perforations 27 in which are arranged strips 28 of metal or other suitable material, hav ing oppositely offset parts 29. The oii'set portions, at one side, rest against the face of the flap, whereby the offset portions atl the other side are spaced from the flap to form the openings 30A to receive the tongues 26. The ends 31 of the strips are clamped against the flap to hold the strips securely in place.
Having thus described iny invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let* ters Patent:
An envelop, having an inner closing flap, and an outer closing flap adapted to be superposed upon said inner flap, said inner ap having a series of openings, and a strip extending through said openings and having offsets, said outer closing flap having a tongue adapted to engage said offsets to hold said flaps removably together.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EUGENE LOW.
