HARVEY K. GREBLE, OF HAMILTON, \OHIO, As sIeNoE OFONE-HALFTO HARRY e. WALLACE, 0F sAME PLACE.
BOOK-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,539, dated June 19, 1894. Application filed February 17, 18941. Serial No. 500,457- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARVEY K. GREBLE, of Hamilton, Butler county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book- (Jovers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains to improvements in covers for note books and the like and the improvements will be readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a perspective view of my improved book cover with its book, shown in closed condition; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the same, shown as open; and Fig. 3, a perspectiveview of. the same when open and in use as a rest to bring the page of the book at convenient angle.
In the drawings:-A, represents the book,
Whose joint is to be of such character as will permit of the book being opened so far as to come back to back, such book being preferably formed by forming the book of a pile of sheets fastened across through their center of length and then folded at this fastening, the joint therefore coming at the fastening and permitting of the fold being in either direction: B, the front cover of the book, constructed of any suitable stiff material, as cardboard: O, the back cover of the book, of similar construction: D, the hinge uniting the two covers, this hinge being formed of flexible material and of a width, between covers, sufficient to freely receive the thickness of the book: E, a tie uniting the joint of the book to the hinge of the cover, such tie preferably consisting of a rubber band engaging the inside of the book at the joint and outside the cover at the hinge: F, a third cover lying outside the back cover 0: G, a hinge uniting the front end of back cover C to the front end of third cover F: H, a ledge projecting rigidly up from the inner face of the rear end of third cover F: and J, an elastic strap secured to front cover B and adapted, when the book is closed, to bind together the front edges of the book and all the covers.
The book when closed appears as in Fig? 1. By unstrapping the band J the book may be opened as an ordinary book, as indicated in Fig. 2, and it maylie flat for any ordinary bookpurposes. When the book is in the position shown in Fig. 2 the joint portion may be lifted, motion taking place on hinge G, and then the cover B may be set down against the ledge H, as in Fig. 3, in which position the cover acts as a rest supporting the book in convenient angular position for reading or for noting. The book may be read upon either side of the angular structure thus formed, and the leaves turned over in either direction as desired. For note book purposes the construction forms a very convenient book for the pocket and for desk use in noting and reading.
This structure is not designed to serve or capable of serving as a portfolio to inclose its contents, the book when closed being inclosed only the same as any ordinary book with two covers. Threefold portfolios have been heretofore devised to completely inclose the contents, one of the folds of the portfolio being provided with folded ledges and latches so that the portfolio might be erected, easel-like, for the display of sheets mounted upon the inner face of the main covers. I disclaim such portfolio construction.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a book cover, the combination, of a front cover and a back cover united together at one edge by a flexible joint or hinge having a width between the inner faces of the covers of not less than the thickness of the book, a third cover hinged to the edge at the free end of theback cover and adapted to lie against the outer surface of the back cover, and have its free end project beyond the hinge uniting the front and back covers and a rigid ledge projecting from the inner surface of the third cover at the free end thereof, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, of a book having a joint permitting the book to open reflexly, a stifi front cover and back cover upon the book and united together by a flexible joint joint between the front and the book cover,
or hinge to the book at the joint thereof, and substantially as and for the purpose set forth. a third cover jointed or hinged to the free end of said back cover and lying against the HARVEY K. GREBLE. outer surface of said back cover and having Witnesses: a rigid ledge projecting from its inner sur- SAM D. FITTON, J12,
