ERIE J. RIEGEL, OF ROCK RAPIDS, IOWA.
INSERT-SHEET FOR BOOKS.
. To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ERIE J. Human, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rock Rapids, in the county of Lyon and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Insert-Sheets for Books, of which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention relates to an insert sheet or leaf for books, its main object being to provide an insert sheet for containing illustrations or other matter requiring space greater than the ordinary leaves of the book, which insert sheet may be bound within the book in a ready and secure manner and readily and conveniently folded to accord in size with the ordinary leaves of the book.
A further object of the invention is to provide an insert sheet having a binding portion and lines of fold, together with flexible protecting means adapted to protect the sheet along the lines of fold, and'also to permit the sheet to be repeatedly folded without breaking, tearing or cracking along the lines of fold. V
The invention consists of the features'of construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan view of an open book, showing the application of the invention, the insert sheet appearing in outspread condition. Fig. 2 is a view of the insert sheet removed and in folded condition. Fig. 3 is a. view of the rear surface of the insert sheet.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the improved insert sheet, which, as shown in the present instance, is of oblong rectan gular form and of greater length or depth than width. This sheet consists of a series of sections, adapted to be folded upon division lines to dispose the sections thereof in superposed relationship so as to be approximately equal in size to any one of the sections and to the ordinary leaves 2 of the book 3 in which the said insert sheet is bound. In the present illustration, the sheet consists of a series of rectangular sections 4, 5, '6, 6', 7 and 7, which are separated by the central vertical fold line 8 and the transverse fold lines 9 and 10 into a plurality of sections, as set forth, which are ,all of the same size or dimensions. The section 4 is provided at its inner end margin with a binding portion 4 coextensive in length Patented Apr. 4, 1916.

therewith and adapted to be bound with'the leaves 2 in the book in any ordinary manner. It will, of course, be understood that the invention may be applied either to permanently bound leaves, or to so called loose leaves. In the illustrated example, the sheet 1 is of a width twice the width of the leaves 2 and of a length three times the length of the leaves 2, but the size of the sheet may be varied as occasion requires.
As stated, the fold lines 8, 9, and 10, which are arranged at right angles to each other, divide the sheet into sections which are adapted to be folded along said lines so as to restrict the size of the sheet to that of a single section, and for the purpose of strengthening and reinforcing the sheet along the binding portion and lines of fold, I provide central and corner reinforcing strips 11 and 12 along the binding portion 4 and the intersecting corner portions of the sheet, whereby the portion 4 is rendered rigid enough to be bound firmly and securely, although the sheet 1 may be made of thin paper. These protecting strips 11 and 12 also reinforce the body of the sheet adjacent to the binding portion, thus greatly increasing its strength and durability. Similar longitudinal and transverse strips 13 and 14 are provided upon the back of the sheet along the fold lines 8, 9 and 10,, so as to strengthen and reinforce the sheet along the lines of fold. The protecting strips may be in the nature of binding cloth or tape 'gummed or pasted inposition, and the strips 13 and 14 are arranged to overlap the lines 8, 9 and 10 so as to equally reinforce the sheet on opposite sides of the line of fold. It will thus be apparent that the sheet may be folded repeatedly without breaking, tearing or cracking along the lines of fold.
The improved sheet is especially designed for use in making plats, cuts, pictures,
drawings and diagrams, etc., where the ordinary leaf of a book is of insuflicient dimensions, but it is desired to have the insert sheet fold within the dimensions of the book, as it provides an exceedingly efficient type of sheet for this purpose. It may also be employed for use in various other kinds of books, for illustrative and other purposes, etc. I
I claim A book having a large insert sheet, said sheet having fold lines at right angles to each other dividing said sheet into sections edge of one section, whereby the sheet is bound between the leaves of the book and may be folded to dispose the sections thereof in superposed relation to each other and Within the dimensions of the book; strips of flexible reinforcing material secured to the sheet along the lines of fold between the divisions of said sheet; and reinforcing strips having portions disposed at an angle to each icopies ofthis patent may ,be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner 01 "Patents,.-i
other secured to the upper "and lower edges secured along the longitudinal edges of the of the binding extension and other portions In testimony whereof I aflix mysig nature in presence of two Witnesses.
