Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. Dus- TAN a citizen of the United States, residing at (llarkston, in the county of Asotin and State of -Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose-Leaf Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to loose sheet holders or binders and an object of the invention is to provide a binder in book form which will be expansible" for the purpose of accommodating a large number of loose sheets. 7 j I Another object of the invention is to provide a loose sheet holder with outwardly extending flaps for the purpose of separating the letters contained in adjacent leaves of the holder.

A further object of the invention is to provide a novel leaf construction for binders of this type wherein the leaves are made of a single blank folded, corresponding parts of the blanks being secured together in pairs to form the leaves.

A further object of the invention is to provide a leaf having a pocket formedv on either side thereof for the reception of loose leaves.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel means for securing the ordinary tab to the leaves of the holder to form the index.

With these and other objects in view the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a view showing a blank which is used in the making up of the holder herein described. Fig. 2 is an edge view of two sheets showing the separating outwardly extending flap in two positions. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the holder in open position. Fig. 4L is an edge view of one of the leaves showing loose sheets held on either side thereof. Fig. 5 is a corresponding view showing loose sheets being held in one side thereof. Fig. 6 is a section through part of the leaf showing the pockets on each lie between adjacent the method of securing the tab thereto. Fig. 7 is a section through one of the leaves of a'modified form of the invention. Fig. 8 1s a perspective view of the parts in Fig. 7 before they are assembled. 7

Referring to the drawings, and more par ticularly to Fig. 1, it will be seen that the blank has a line of scoring 1 whichdivides the same into two equal portions, this line of scoring together with adjacent scorings 2 serving to define the panels 3 of theback. Each half ofthe blank is provided with a scoring 4: which defines an end flap 5 adapted to be bent inwardly to hold'the loose sheets. Just outside of the scoring 4 there'are provided two additional lines of

6 and 7, the utility of these scorings being shown more clearly in Fig. 2, where it is'seen that they give the flap 5 an accordion hinge connection with the blank. In order to hold the member 5 in place there is provided a flexible strip 8 which preferably connects both ends of the pocket forming flaps 5 to prevent the slipping of loose sheets. As shown in Fig. 3, these strips 8 are adapted to secure adjacent ends of the flaps forming side of each leaf. Just inside of the lines of scoring 2 there is provided an additional scorin 9 for the purpose of rendering the bac lr of the holder expansible for the reception of additional sheets. When it is desired to form a holder out of these sheets, the leaf portions 10 of the blanks included between the lines of scoring 2 and A are glued or secured in any other manner to corresponding portions of other blanks formed identical with the blank herein described, this construction being indicated in Fig. 2. This construction is also shown in Fig. 3, where all of the parts shown are formed of one blank, such as is shown in Fig. 1. The pocket forming flaps 5 are then bent'so that one lies upon each side of the leaf 10 and the flexible strip 8. secured to the flaps as before described, to hold the ends 5 in place. By referring to Fig. 42 it will be noted that the; strip 8 is not secured to the leaves 10, but only to the pockets and further that the holder is designed to carry an equal number of sheets upon each side of the leaf 10, and in such case thestrip-S will just straddle the edge of the leaves 10. By referring to Fig. 5 it will be seen that it. will be possible by reason of this construction to fill one side of the pocket'completely and leave the other side'vacant, in which case the strips 8 will lie wholly upon one side of the leaf 10. In order that the strips Sma'y be accommodated when the" leaves'do not contain sheets the blank isprovided with cut away portions 11 extending from the line of scoring 4: inwardly as indicated in Fig 1. By reason of. the cut away portions the folded portions of the strips will not form bulky ends for the pockets.

As shown in Fig. 6, a tab 12 is secured between the blank sections forming the leaves 10, thesetabs being secured by the same adhesive or other sections together. From the description of this form of the invention it will be seen that the leaves are made up of blanks which are cut and folded in such a way as to form pockets on adjacent leaves and also to provideme'ans for separating the sheets held by the said pockets.

Secured upon the back of each of these envelops is a strip 17 which is also secured to the tab 14. Insomuch as the strip 17 is notsecured in any way to the leaf 13 except by means of the tab 14 it will be readily seen that. the same will allow papers or sheets to be held entirely within the envelop, and still form an effective means for holding said envelop tightly to I the leaves.

4. A loose sheet binder comprising a pluralitv of leaves, one half of each of two adjacent leaves being formed of'the same strip of material, an inbent portion of the strip lyingv between adjacent leaves, and pocket defining portions, one on each of said leaves, integral with the said strip.
