Description

Feb. 9, H965 Filed May 18. 1962 L M 15 w W nit States Patent 3,169,029 IMITATED NORMAL HARD BOOK COVER Morris 1. Margolis, Brewster, N.Y. F. M. Charlton (30., 443 W. 15th St., New York 11, NY.) Filed May 18, 1962, Ser. No. 195,719 2 Claims. (Cl. 281-29) This invention relates to bookbinding, and particularly to covering paper bound books.
So called paper bound books have been made for many years but initially were limited to notebooks and the like. As competition and cost increased, cloth binders made prices of cloth bound volumes too expensive for the average book published. With the tremendous improvements in the plastics industries, plastic sheets and paper sheets with plastic coating are available which are particularly adapted for use as book covers. However, in almost all instances, such covers are quite flexible and lack thickness of body, unlike cloth bound books.
Accordingly, an object of this invention is to provide a cover for a paper bound book that simulates a cloth cover.
Another object of this invention is to provide a paper book cover that is rigid and has substantial thickness.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a unitized paper book cover that has improved cover hinges comparable to cloth book covers.
These and other objects and advantages will become apparent to those skilled in the art by referring to the following description and the accompanying drawings wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of an unfolded paper book cover in accordance with the invention;
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of a book with the cover of FIGURE 1, one leaf of the cover being open;
FIGURE 3 is an enlarged sectional view of the open cover portion of FIGURE 2 taken on line 3-3;
FIGURE 4 is a sectional view of the book of FIG- URE 2 taken on line 4-4;
FIGURE 5 is a perspective view of an unfolded modified paper book cover made in accordance with the invention;
FIGURE 6 is a sectional view of the back part of a book with the cover of FIGURE 5.
At the outset, it should be understood that the term paper book cover is used in its generic sense to mean a book cover of paper or cardboard that is either finished or not with a plastic layer. This term is also considered to denote a cover of plastic or of a paper or cardboard layer adhered to a layer of plastic.
Now referring to the drawings, a paper book cover 10 is made of a substantially rectangular sheet with upper and lower surfaces 11 that are parallel to one another. The cover 10 is symmetrical about a central back panel 14. Fold lines 15, 17, 19 and 21 are indicated by construction line in FIGURE 1 on both sides of panel 14. Between progressive pairs of the aforementioned fold lines, on both sides of back panel 14, are binding panels 16, outer front and back panels 18, inner front and back panels 20, and tab panels 22 at the ends of the cover 10. The outer front and back cover panels 13 extend past the top and bottom edges 11 to provide tabs 12 which are folded on lines 13 alined with edges 11.
As shown in FIGURES 2 to 4, tabs 12 are folded along lines 13 against the inner surface of the outer cover panels 18. Inner front and back cover panels 20 are folded along lines 19 and are glued or cemented to tabs 12. The tabs 12 space panels 18 and 20 to provide a air pocket 23 which may be filled if desired. The tabs 22 may be folded oppositely to panels 20 along lines 21 to provide spacers as shown at the upper portion of the book of FIG- URES 2 and 4, may be cemented to the binding panels 16 (not shown) or may be cut off along lines 21, as shown at the lower portions of the book of FIGURES 2 and 4.
Binding panels 16 are folded relative to back panel 14 along lines 15 to provide a U-shaped channel to receive the backs of the pages P of the book and to be attached thereto.
Referring now to FIGURES 5 and 6, a modified cover 10A has no binding panels 16 nor tab panels 22 thus the cover sheet is out along lines 21 to provide end edges 25. Tab panels 12 and cover panels 20 are folded in the same manner as heretofore described. Edges 24 now overlie fold lines 17. Outer cover panels 18 are folded along lines 17 relative to back panel 14 which is now the only panel to be attached to the pages P of the book.
While this invention has been described with particular reference to the construction shown in the drawing, it is to be understood that such is not to be construed as imparting limitations upon the invention, which is best defined by the claims appended hereto.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A unitized paper book cover made of a single substantially rectangular sheet with parallel upper and lower edges, comprising:
(a) a U-shaped back panel having a pair of spaced binding portions to be connected to the pages of a book;
(b) folds on both sides of said back panel providing hinges;
(c) a pair of cover panels connected to said back panel by said hinges;
(d) each of said cover panels having an end edge fold spaced from one of said hinges providing an outer cover portion therebetween and an inner cover portion substantially equal in size to said outer cover portion;
(e) each outer cover portion having spaced fold lines alined with the upper and lower edges of the sheet;
(1) a pair of tabs connected to each outer cover portion by the spaced fold lines and folded back against the inner surface of the outer cover portion along such fold lines;
(g) the inner cover portions folded back along the end edge fold lines to the outer cover portions and the tabs connected thereto;
(h) the inner cover portions being cemented along their edges and spaced by the tabs from the outer cover portions to provide closed air pockets in the front and back book covers;
(i a pair of fold lines each at the end of one of the inner cover portions spaced from one of the end edge fold lines and overlying one of the hinges; and
(j) a pair of tab panels connected by the fold lines overlying the hinges to said inner cover portions and being cemented to the binding portions within the U-shaped back panel.
