No. 125,213, filed Mar. 17, 1971 for Cross Folded Envelope Pamphlet, and is also copending with my application Ser. Nos. 94,052, filed Dec. 1, 1970, for Continuous Forming of Envelopes in Pamphlets and Ser. No. 123,543, filed Mar. 12, 1971, for Forming Multiple Page Pamphlet now US. Pat. No. 3,665,817.
This invention relates to a pamphlet having an envelope therein, and more particularly to a pamphlet containing an envelope which is formed integrally with the pamphlet and is detachably retained therein.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTS The prior art is replete with many forms of advertising devices containing reply postcards or envelopes. Frequently, preprinted reply postcards are formed on pages of a pamphlet, and have perforations along their edges to permit ready removal from the pamphlet. Such advertising material has become popular in recent years. However, if any questionaire or money is to be returned, obviously a postcard is not suitable. In such cases, an envelope is required.
To overcome this difficulty, frequently envelopes have been stapled into a preformed pamphlet and are subsequently removed and mailed. This way, money or other papers may be returned in the envelope thus provided. However, the stapling of the envelope into the binding can be a time consuming and expensive process for the advertiser or publisher. A separate piece of equipment is necessary to perform the stapling operation, and this is particularly disadvantageous if the pamphlet is not ordinarily stapled, but is instead bound by gluing.
Also, many advertisers heretofore have merely inserted an envelope into a pamphlet, newspaper, or other publication loosely so that it is not bound therein. Obviously, this practice may frequently result in loss of envelopes and possible loss of sales to the advertiser.
Accordingly, it is a primary object of this invention to provide a pamphlet having an envelope formed integrally therewith.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a pamphlet having an envelope therein which may be removed therefrom.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide a pamphlet having an envelope formed therein which may be readily manufactured simultaneously with the pamphlet.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a pamphlet which may have a pluralityof pages of advertising material and contain an envelope formed therein.
Yet a further object of this invention is to provide an envelope-containing pamphlet wherein the envelope may be of a variable size within certain limits.
Still a further object of this invention is to provide an envelope-containing pamphlet in which the envelope may have more than one pocket.
A still further object of this invention is to provide an envelope-containing pamphlet which may have a variety of different configurations for different purposes.
Still a further object of this invention is to provide an envelope-containing pamphlet which may be formed in a continuous operation.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS These and other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent when considered in light of the following description and claims when taken together with the drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the envelope containing the pamphlet of this invention; and
FIGS. 2-9 illustrates schematically several different embodiments of this invention.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT With reference now to FIG. 1, the pamphlet of this invention generally designated 10, includes a first sheet of paper 12 having pages or sections 14 and 16 formed by longitudinally extending fold line 18 which extends the whole length of the pages from top to bottom. A second sheet of paper 20 is provided with parallel lon- .gitudinally extending fold lines 22 and 24 which extend the length of the sheet and are parallel and divide sheet 20 into sections 26, 28 and 30. Both sheets are fastened together by a line of adhesive disposed adjacent the first fold 24 as illustrated at 32 in FIG. 1. Pages 16 and 26 in this modification are held together by adhesive which is spaced from the fold line 18. V
The envelope portion is formed from the second sheet of paper 20 by the folding of sheets 28 and 30 about the second fold line 22. Sheet 30 is less in width than sheet 28 and a flap section for the envelope adjacent fold line 24 includes an adhesive strip for the flap of the envelope and a tear-line of perforations 36. Optionally, the fold line 38 for the flap may be provided. Line 36 may also be made to coincide with fold line 24 as shown in FIG. 5. A pair of adhesive strips or lines 40 are provided between sheets 28 and 30 to hold the sheets together and form the side edges of the envelope. These strips of adhesive are slightly spaced from the second fold line 22 and extend transversely therefrom toward the flap section of the envelope. The envelope so formed will open toward the inside fold of the pamphlet. The envelope page 30 has been opened along arcuate line 42 for purposes of illustration to show the general disposition of the adhesive stripes 40 and the relationships of the various elements of the envelope.
It will be noted that the spacing between adhesive strips 40 determines the length of the envelope. If they are positioned adjacent the top and bottom edges of sheets 28 and 30, the envelope length will be the length of the pages 14 and 26. The length of pages 14, 16, and 26 is preferably the same and their top and bottom edges are in alignment, since the pamphlets are made in a continuous manner from web material and the top and bottom edges simultaneously cut as illustrated in my above-mentioned co-pending patent applications and US. Pat. No. 3,665,817.
If desired, a second line of perforations 44 may be provided on the outside edge of the envelope in those situations where the envelope is not to extend the full length of the adjacent sheets.
In those instances where a coin pouch or pocket is to be formed for use either with the envelope or separate therefrom, an additional adhesive strip or strips 46 are provided parallel to strips 40.
If desired, a fold line 48, similar to fold line 38 and which extends the length of page 26 adjacent the adhesive section to permit turning of the pages readily.
FIG. 4 illustrates the same pamphlet as shown in FIG. 1 in a schematic representation.
FIG. 5 illustrates a similar embodiment to that of FIGS. 1 and 4, however, in this example, section is folded toward the same side of section 28 as is section 26. The result of this embodiment is that the envelope is placed so that it opens toward the center fold of the pamphlet.
In each of the preceding embodiments, it is seen that a pamphlet having six printed pages is provided.
In the embodiments of FIGS. 2 and 3, sections 14 and 16 are identical to those of FIGS. 1, 4 and 5. A second sheet 50 is provided and has folds 52 and 54 dividing sheet 50 into sections 56, 58 and 60. Adhesive stripes 62 correspond to adhesive stripes of FIG. 1, and adhesive area 64 corresponds to adhesive area 34 of FIG. 1. In this embodiment, section 56 of sheet is seen to be relatively narrow, and is attached over its entire area to section 16 of the first sheet. The attachment is provided preferably by adhesive, but other suitable means as previously mentioned could be utilized. In this manner, a pamphlet having four printed pages and an envelope is provided.
FIG. 3 shows a construction similar to that of FIG. 2, however, section 60' is folded toward the same side of section 58 as is section 56. Obviously, adhesive sections 62' and 64' are on the opposite side of section 58' from that shown in FIG. 2.
Referring now to FIG. 6, a slightly different form of this invention is shown. A first sheet of paper 66 is provided as is a second sheet 68. Second sheet 68 is provided with two fold lines 70 and 72 which divide sheet 68 into sections 74, 76 and 78. Section 74 is secured to sheet 66 along a marginal edge thereof, and in this manner, a two-printed page pamphlet containing an envelope is provided. Glue areas 80 and 82 are provided as in previous examples as is a perforation line 84.
The embodiment of FIG. 7 is similar to that of FIG. 6, however, section 78 is folded toward the opposite side of section 76 than is section 74'. In this manner, the envelope opens on the outside of the pamphlet, rather than on the inside of the pamphlet as in FIG. 6.
FIGS. 8 and 9 illustrate pamphlets having four printed pages and an envelope formed therein. FIG. 8 includes a first sheet 86, and a second sheet 88. Sheet 88 has fold lines 90 and 92 which divide sheet 88 into sections 94, 96 and 98. Adhesive areas and I02 are also provided on section 96 as is a fold line 104. In FIG. 8, it is seen that sections 94 and 98 are folded. toward opposite sides of section 96.
In FIG. 9, the construction is essentially similar to I that of FIG. 8, however, sections 94' and 98 are folded toward the same side of section 96. Adhesive areas 100 and 102', fold line 104, and fold lines 90' and 92' are similar to the corresponding elements in FIG. 8.
Each of the foregoing embodiments of this invention may be formed in a continuous manner by the methods disclosed in my aforementioned copending applications. Additionally, any of the alternative constructions described with respect to FIG. 1 may be utilized in the embodiments of FIGS. 2 through 9 without deviating from the scope of this invention. Furthermore, additional pages may be added to the pamphlet by any suitable means, such as, for example, adhesively securing them to any of the other pages near the binding area or securing them adhesively between section 26 and sheet 12.
While this invention has been described, it will be understood that it is capable of further modification, and this application is intended to cover any variations, uses and/or adaptations of the invention following in general, the principle of the invention and including such departures from the present disclosure as come within known or customary practice in the art to which the invention pertains, and as may be applied to the essential features hereinbefore set forth, as fall within the scope of the invention or the limits of the appended claims.
