Description

p 1935' I w. ENOCH 2,015,32
BINDING STRIP Filed May 28, 1954 Patented Sept. 24, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BINDING STRIP tion of New York Application May 28, 1934, Serial No. 727,954
1 Claim.
This invention relates to strips of a type adapted for use as binding strips.
It is an object of the invention to provide an improved strip which may be used for various purposes where reinforcement, stiffening, or protection is desired, as for example, as a binding for sheet music, pamphlets, booklets and the like; as a binding for envelopes; as a loose leaf binder; and as an edge binder for pictures in the manner of passe partout.
Other objects and advantages of the inventionwill appear hereinafter.
A preferred embodiment of the invention selected for purposes of illustration is shown in the 5 accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a top plan View of the strip. Figure 2 is an end elevation. Figure 3 is an end elevation showing the strip applied as a binding. 20 Figure 4 is a perspective view showing the strip applied as a binding.
Referring to the drawing, the strip comprises a plurality of strips I which extend lengthwise of the finished strip, and are arranged so that their 25 adjacent edges are parallel and are separated by a space 2. The said strips may be of any suitable material, but are preferably made of relatively heavy kraft paper in order to give body and stiffness to the finished strip. Secured to the said 30 strips, and connecting the same together in spaced relationship is a covering strip 3 which is preferably of textile material such as muslin, for example, somewhat thinner than the strips I.
In order to give additional stiffness to the fin- 35 ished strip, the reinforcing strips 4 may be provided, also extending longitudinally of the finished strip, and located between each of the strips I and the strip 3. These reinforcing strips are preferably of metal. The strips I and the covering strip 3 and the reinforcing strips 4 are secured together in any suitable manner, but are preferably secured by adhesive in the manner disclosed in the copending application of Frederick W. 5 Laencher, Serial No. 704,713, filed December 30, 1933.
Each of the strips I is preferably provided with an adhesive coating 5 on its exposed face for convenience i'n attaching the same to the article to 10 be bound in the manner illustrated in Figures 3 and 4.
When the binder strip is attached, that portion of the covering strip 3 which lies over the space 2 between the strips I serves as a flexible hinge, so that the sheet music, for example, may be folded in the ordinary manner as indicated in Figure 4. At the same time, the strips I, together with the reinforcing strips 4, provide stifiness and rigidity which prevent the sheets from collapsing as they are turned. They also provide additional strength and assist in preventing tearing at the line of fold where it is most likely to occur.
It will be understood that the invention may be variously modified and embodied within the scope of the subjoined claim.
I claim as my invention:
Binder strip, comprising, in combination, a plurality of strips of material extending lengthwise thereof and having adjacent parallel edges separated by a space, a covering strip secured to both of said strips and connecting the same together in spaced relationship, a metal strip located between said covering material and each of said first named strips, said first named strips each having a surface coated with adhesive for attachment to the article to be bound.
