The present invention relates to books, and more particularly to book-bindings, the present application being a division of my pending application for U. S. Letters Patent Serial No.

. 619,148, filed June 24., 1932.

. Among the objects of the present invention is to provide novel means for attaching or securing a pluralityof sheets of material forming the contents .of a book to the covers thereof.

Heretofore, a plurality of sheets of material forming the contents of a book has been secured or attached to the covers as by means of pieces of material in such a manner that the book covers were not free to be opened. in a fiat position or to a position beyond the plane of the side of these sheets of material adjacent which these pieces of binding material were connected. When these sheets of material were secured to the covers in this particular manner, any movement of the covers beyond a position normally restricted by the attaching means used, caused a tearing or loosening of, the cover in respect to the sheets of material, or when the binding material was secured to the sheets of material forming the contents of the book, as by means of stitching, glue, or the like, such movement caused a tearing away of the binding material from the securing means and caused the binding material to be torn or loosened at those points at which the same was attached to the plurality of sheets of material forming the contents of the book.

It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide novel means for securing or attaching the sheets of material forming the contents of the book to the covers therefor, whereby these covers are free to open into a flat position relative to the sides of these sheets of material, or should the covers be moved into contacting or engaging relation, the binding material will not be subjected to strains which would tend to cause a loosening or tearing of the same with the plurality of sheets of material.

Still another object of the present invention is to provide a novel means for binding a plurality of sheets of material forming the contents of a book to the covers, such means comprising pieces of material which may be secured in any desired manner to these plurality of sheets and extend therefromin a single layer to the covers, to which the same may also be secured in'any desired manner, thus forming a structure in which the covers are free to be opened flat in respect to the sides of these sheets of material without causing a loosening or tearing of the same with these sheets of material.

Still another object of the present invention is to provide a novel binding means comprising pieces of material adapted :tobe placed in superimposed relation With the sides of a plurality of sheets of material forming the contents of a 5 book, which may be secured thereto in any desired manner so as to provide a free edge which may be secured to the covers, thus providing a binding in which any pull or tension exerted on the cover is counteracted by the direct connection between these pieces of material and the plurality of sheets of materialt The present invention also comprehends the .ideaof providing a novel book comprising a plurality of sheetsof material forming the contents of the book, which sheets of material are secured to the covers by means of strips having their inner edge secured to the sheets and their outer edge to the covers of the book, end sheets being secured to these strips which have a part secured to the inner face of the covers forming the finishing sheet therefor and having a part forming fly-leaves for the book.

The present invention also contemplates the use of such end strips in order to cover stitching and/or other material used to secure the sheets of the book to the strips, thereby providing a finished book on the inside.

It is still another object of the present invention to provide a novel book of such a construction that the sheets of material forming the con- .tents thereof may be secured to the securing strips and the end sheets secured to these securing strips, and such sheets trimmed before the same are secured or attached in position within the cover 3 of the book.

Other objects, features, capabilities and advantages are comprehended by the invention, as will later appear and as are inherently possessed thereby.

Referring to the drawing:

Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a book disclosing a binding therefor made in accordance with the present invention; and

Figure 2, a fragmentary sectional view of the book of Fig. 1.

Referring to the accompanying drawing showing an embodiment of the invention, the book comprises a plurality of sheets 3 of material, such as paper, and shown as comprising signatures in accordance with common practice, (though the invention is not limited thereto) constituting the body of the book, and secured together by stitching as hereinafter described. Reinforcing 9.1" binding strips 4, as for example of fabric, are 55 the strips 4. sheets are secured, as indicated, to the first and secured along their inner edge portions in flatwise condition to the outer ones, respectively, of the sheets 3 adjacent the back edge of the book to extend substantially the full length of the sheets, as by means of stitching represented at 6 which may be continuous or otherwise, as desired, and which in the particular construction shown extends continuously through the portions 5 of the strips 4 and the sheets 3, thus not only binding the sheets together but binding the strips 4 to the sheets. The strips 4 thus present edge portions 1 which extend beyond the back edge of the book and to which portions the covers 8 of the book are secured as by any suitable adhesive, such as glue, the outer edge portions 1 of the strips 4 at which they are secured to the covers 8 lying fiatwise against the inner sides of the covers at the back edges thereof. In other words, the strips 4 are disposed in such a position relative to the body of the book and the covers 8 that, considering the covers 8 as folded outwardly into open condition as represented of one of the covers in the drawing, the strip portions I extend outwardly beyond the back edge of the body of the book, as represented of the strip to which the outwardly turned cover is attached, so that the lines of flexure of the strips 6 and at which the hinge joints between the covers 8 and the body of the book are formed, are adjacent the back edge of the body of the book as represented at 9.

The covers 8 are shown as comprising parts of a case, and including a flexible back-edgeforming portion 10 as commonly provided in cases, and connecting the covers together.

The strips 4 lie substantially flat whereby the covers 8 are permitted to be opened in substantially parallel relationship or into engagement with one another along their outer edges without affecting the book binding or causing undue stress 01' strain on the stitching 6 or on material holding the plurality of the sheets 3 to these covers. a

The book as shown is provided with an inside finish for each side thereof comprising integral end sheets H having a part I2 covering a portion of the binding strips 4 and secured to the inside faces of the covers 8 in any desirable manner, as for example by any suitable adhesive, to form the inside finishing sheets therefor. The other portion of each of the sheets I l covers the remaining portions of the strips 4 and the stitching 6, or other securing means, and forms a flyleaf l3 for the book; 7

In forming the book the end sheets H, which are folded substantially along their medial lines, are secured, in accordance with the preferred procedure of forming the book, to the binding strips 4 at the same time these strips are secured to the first and last book-sections. This is accomplished by a suitable machine which applies a suitable adhesive material to the upper surface along one edge of each of the strips 4 and on the under surface along the opposite edge thereof and bringing the end sheets and the first and last sectionsof the book into engagement with After the strips 4 and the end last sections referred to, the remaining sections of the body of the book are gathered and assembled to form the book-body.

The gathered sections of the book are then as glue, is applied to the outside faces of the first of sheets of material forming the contents and last book-sections over, and adjacent to, the stitching 6 and the portions l3 of the end sheets are brought into engagement therewith so as to connect these portions to the first and last booksections as at Hi. The portions l2 of the end sheets can then be secured to the covers 6 by any suitable adhesive material. The adhesive material applied to the stitching 6 anchors the same to prevent slippage and provides for the connections at E4 to produce a book having a 10 finished appearance on the inside between thev portions I3 forming the fly-leaves of the book and the outer faces of the first and last sections of the book-body.

It will be quite apparent from the above description that thepresent book includes a strong binding for the plurality of sheets of material forming the contents thereof. The book may be subjected to hard usage and the covers turned into contacting engagement without fear that the binding will become loosened or be torn from the covers. With the integral end sheets having a part forming the inside finishing strip for the covers and a part forming the fly-leaves for the book and covering these binding strips, it will be quite apparent that the book has a finished appearance when the covers are opened and closely approximates the appearance of the well-known Smythe sewn book, but has the distinct advantage over that type of book binding in that the binding does not become loosened or damaged because of hard usage and because of undue pressure being applied to the covers or sheets of the book when the same are in opened position. a

While I have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of my invention I do not wish to be understood as intending to limit the invention thereto as the same may be variously modified and altered and the invention embodied in other forms without departing from the spirit of the invention.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: i

1. In a book, the combination of' a plurality thereof, covers of relatively stiff material connected together by a backing portion disposed adjacent the rear edge of said contents, a single strip of material in superimposed relation with fold fitting within the fold of one of said strips,

a part of each of said end sheets to one side of the fold thereof being secured to the rear part of one of said strips and to one of the covers to form an inside finishing sheet therefor, the other part of each of said end sheets being secured to the forward part of one of said strips to cover said securing means to provide a finished construction, said last-named parts extending beyond said securing means to provide fly leaves for said book between said covers and contents.

2. In a book, the combination of a plurality of sheets of material forming the contents thereof, covers of relatively stiff material connected together by a backing portion disposed adjacent the rear edge of said contents, a single stripv of a material in superimposed relation with each side of said contents and having a fold substantially at said rear edge, each of said strips from the fold thereof extending to and overlapping an adjacent cover, stitching for securing said strips and contents together, means for securing each of said strips to the adjacent cover, and an end sheet between each of said covers and said contents, each of said end sheets having a fold fitting within the fold of one of said strips, a part of each of said end sheets to one side of the fold thereof being secured to the rear part of one of 'said strips and to one of the covers to form an inside finishing sheet therefor, the other part of each of said end sheets being secured by mucilaginous material to the forward part of one of said strips to a point beyond said stitching to provide a finished construction, said lastnamed parts extending beyond said stitching to provide fly leaves for said book between said covers and contents.
