Description

D ec. 13, 1960 sAlHEl AKlMoTo FLEXIBLE HINGEs oF BooK PANEL BoABns Filed June 25, 1957 INVENTOR United States Patent O 2,964,336 FLEXIBLE HINGES OF BOOK PANEL BOARDS Saihei Akimoto, 1 of No. 2946, Oaza Beppu, Beppu City, Japan Filed June 25, 1957, Ser. No. 667,748
1 Claim. (Cl. 281-29) This invention relates to flexible hinges of book panel boards.
In a known flexible hinge of a book panel board, cloth is used to paste upon the panel board. But some kinds of material of board can never or hardly be pasted and require some special adhesive. For instance, a veneer board is susceptible to the pasted parts peeling away while in use and to disorder of the boundary of the hinge. Generally, the pasting work needs much skill, many processes and plenty of time. In the case in which a hinge of vinyl cloth lined with paper or cloth is pasted upon veneer board, the breadth of the laminated part of the hinge and the board requires at least mm. and the three pasting processes, spreading paste, pressing and drying, must be repeated at least twice and, besides, the drying requires so much time. And, if the vinyl film is use-d as a hinge, the adhesive must have high viscosity, the brush can not be used, spreading paste is very difllcult and thus the efficiency is still lower. And water soluble paste can most easily be spread by a brush and, as things now are, this brushing method is most favoured. So, only those kinds of material with such chemical conditions as are suitable for making water soluble paste are now used.
The object of the present invention is to provide means to attach a flexible hinge to a book panel board very easily and quickly without pasting.
With this object in view, the present invention provides a flexible hinge of a book panel board, wherein a flexible hinge piece of leather or the like is applied to an inner edge of a panel board, upon which a metallic clamp of U-shape in cross-section is fitted and pressed so as to tightly secure the flexible hinge piece to the panel board by clamping.
According to the present invention, the flexible hinge piece can be attached to either side of the panel board by one pressing of the clamp. Therefore, the attachment of the flexible hinge piece to the panel board is very easy and quick as compared with the known pasting method, and can be much lower in cost. Moreover, not only the overlaps of the hinge piece and the panel board is very small but also veneer, fiber board, rubber board, linoleum board or any kind of synthetic resin board may be used as a panel board. Such increase in kinds of material usable as the panel board is very advantageous.
Other and further objects of the present invention will become apparent from the following specification and claims taken together with the accompanying drawings in which are shown preferred embodiments of flexibly hinged book panel boards according to the present invention.

Fig. 4 is a sectional view of a modified book cover provided with the present invention.
In these drawings, reference numeral 11 indicates a panel or cover board of a device of the class described provided with an undercut in the form of sunken parts 12 on each surface of its inner or longitudinally extending edge, herein by forming said edge as a dove-tailed section. A flexible hinge piece 13 consisting of a sheet or strip of flexible material such as cloth or leather has a cover-engaging portion which is applied upon and embraces the inner edge of the panel board 11, and a metallic clamping means 14 of U-shaped cross-section is embracingly fitted upon the flexible hinge piece 13 by means of a press so as to sink down into the undercut or sunken parts 12 and secure the flexible material to said edge. The sheet of binding material comprises at least one standing portion projecting from between said clamping means and edge for constituting a flexible hingeelement of the device. In the form of Figs. 2 and 4, it has two standing portions which extend away from the coverboard 11 around and beyond the clamping means in juxtaposed relation, thus forming a two-ply hinge and concealing the clamping means therein. In the arrangement of Fig. 2, the flexible sheet 15 (xed by rivets 16 or the like upon the outer surface of a pair of loose-leaf binder elements 17 which are provided with prongs 18 and hinged together by a pin 19) has two spaced parallel cover-engaging or end portions which are clamped as aforesaid to form the flexible hinges 13 for a pair of panel boards. In the arrangements of Fig. 3 and 4 the end edges of the book-back cloth or leather 15 of a book cover are also clamped as aforesaid to form the flexible hinges 13 for a pair of panel boards 11.
It is thought that the invention and its advantages will be understood from the foregoing description and it is apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing its` material advantages, the form hereinbefore described and illustrated in the drawings being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
A device of the class described comprising a cover board having a longitudinally extending edge, a sheet of flexible binding material having a cover engaging portion thereof embracing said longitudinal edge, clamping means of U-shaped cross section embracing said cover engaging portion and securing it to said edge, said sheet comprising two standing portions projecting from between said edge and clamping means, at opposite sides of said cover board, respectively, said two standing portions being extended away from said cover board across and beyond said clamping means in juxtaposed relation and forming a two ply flexible hinge element with said clamping means concealed between said two plies.
