APPLICATION FILED MAR. 28. I921.

PATEN FFEE,
WILLIAM P. PITT, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO IRVING-PITT MANU- FACTURING COMPANY, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI. A CORPORATION OF MIS- SOURI.
BINDER:
Patented July 18, 1922.
Application filed March 28,1921. Serial No. 456,174.
To all 10 7mm it may concern Be it known that I, VViLLIAM P. Prr'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Binders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in binders.
It relates particularly to temporary binders of the type having a binder member carrying posts for receiving loose leaves and provided with a cover hinged to the binder member.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide novel means for hinging the cover ,to the binder member, which affords a simple construction, cheap to make, which presents an attractive appearance, which is strong and durable and not liable to get out of order, which enables the binding material to be cheaply applied, and which serves to' protect the binding material and to hold it in place on the binder member.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates the preferred embodiment of my invention,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a binder member and cover provided with my improvement.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a bottom view of What is shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective view of one of the end caps.
Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the different views.
1 designates the tubular body of a binder member, Fig. 2, having mounted thereon the usual posts 2, adapted to support loose leaves.
The body 1 may be encircled by a strip of binding material 3, and Which may be glued to the body 1 and over which are fitted two end caps 4, preferably of sheet metal, and which are respectively tightly fitted on the reduced ends of the body 1.
Each end cap 4 is provided with a laterally extending lip 5, which is provided with means for being hinged to a cover body 6, having one edge embraced by a channel strip 7 of metal, having mounted in it a pintle 8. I F or receiving the pintle 8, each lip may be provided with a barrel 9.
Binding material 10 may embrace the cover body 6 and the channel member 7.
In the construction of the binder, the strip of binding material 3 may be wound around the body 1, and glued thereto, after which, when the glue has dried, the caps 1 are driven onto the body 1 over the binding material 3. The pintle 8 is then inserted through the barrels 9, and through the channel member 7, along the adjacent edge of the cover body 6.
With this construction, no rivets or screws are required to make the hinge connection, and the caps 4 serve not only as hinge memhere, but they protect the binding 3 and hold the latter in place, as well as affording an ornamental finish to the ends of the binder member 1.
With the use of my invention, expensive hand binding is eliminated and a very cheap, strong and durable structure is afforded.
I do not limit my invention to the structure shown and described, as many modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim is 1. In a binder, a binder member comprising a body, and two end members mounted respectively on the ends of the body and having each a lip formed into a barrel adapted to receive a pintle, substantially as set forth.
2. In a binder, a binder member comprising a body, and two end caps, in which the ends of the body are respectively mounted, each cap having a lip formed into a barrel adapted to receive a pintle, substantially as set forth.
3. In a binder, a binder member comprising a body, binding material embracing said body, and two end caps respectively mounted on the ends of said body and embracing the binding material and provided each with a lip formed into a barrel adapted to receive a pintle, substantially as set forth.
4. In a binder, a binder member comprising a body, a strip of binding material encircling the body, and two end caps respectively mounted on the ends of the body and embracing said strip and provided each with a lip formed into a barrel adapted to receive a pintle, substantially as set forth.
In a binder, a cap adapted to be fitted on one end of a binder member and provided with a lip formed into a barrel adapted to receive a pintle, substantially as set forth.
6. In a binder, a cover, a pintle mounted therein, and a binder member comprising a body, and two end members mounted respectively on the ends of the body, and provided each with a lip formed'into a barrel in which said pintle is mounted, substantially as set forth.
7. In a binder, a cov r, a binder. member comprising a body and two caps respectively mounted on the ends of the body and having
