LABEL HOLDER FOR BINDERS Filed Aug. 11, 1930 J? I T L2.

Patented Feb. 2, 1932 UNITED STATES GEORGE H. DAWSON, or CAMBRIDGE, MAssAoHUsn'rrs, Ass mesewmsomoms COMPANY, 01? CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, a coaronn'rron or MASSACHUSETTS LABEL HOLDER FOR BINDERS Application filed August 11, 1930. Serial No. 474,609.
This invention relates to a label holder for loose leaf binders which is adapted to be secured to the back of the book for the purpose of displaying a label.
The invention comprises the novel structure and combination of parts hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out and defined in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate a preferred form of this invention and in which similar reference numerals refer to similar features in the difierent views:
Figure 1 is a rear elevational view of the back portion of a binder with the covers removed.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of such binder with the cover removed but showing the metal hinge plate which is attached to the cover. I
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken upon the line III-III of Figure 1. v
Figure 4.- is a perspective view of the label holder. 1
In the drawings certain parts of a loose leaf binder have been illustrated in order to show the application of the label holder. These parts comprise the side hinge plates 1 which are hinged to a curved back hinge plate 2 which in turn is anchored to a curved back plate 3. It will, of course, be understood that suitable cover members are adapted to be attached to the side plates 1 which are hinged upon the rods 4: which extend through suitable spaced curls or barrels upon the hinge plate 2. The back of the binder is preferably depressed as indicated at 5 for receiving the label holder bringing the same substantially flush with the rear surface of the back.
The label holder which is represented by the reference numeral 6 consists of a substantially rectangular. open metal frame having side lugs 7 which are adapted to be curled or folded around the hinge rods 4 at suitable points. This label holder is slightly arcuate in cross-section in order to correspond to the curvature of the back of the binder and the 7 main body portion thereof is offset from the lateral edges thereof in order to receive a label thereunder. The label holder 6 is designed to be placed in the depression 5 of the back of the binder and the lugs 7 are adapted to be folded or curled around the hinge rods 4.
It will be obvious that the label holder may be readily applied or removed and may easily be applied to existing binders having suitable hinge rods or attaching means therefor. It will be appreciated that since the label holder is located in a depression in the back of the binder, it will be substantially flush with the back thereof, thereby decreasing the liability of having the same injured or damaged or torn off in handling the binder.
I am aware that many changes may be made, and numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I, therefore, do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon, otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with a hinge rods for the cover, of a label-holder attached to the back of the binder and having lugs engaging said hinge rods.
2. In a loose leaf binder comprising a back hinge plate, cover members and hinge rods connecting said cover members to said hinge back plate, said back plate having a depression and a label-holder mounted in said depression and having means attached to said hinge rods for retaining said label-holder in said depression. 3; The combination with a binder comprising a rear structure and cover members, hinge rods connecting said cover members and rear structure, said rear structure having a depression and a label-holder mounted in said depression and having lugs embracing said hinge rods.
4. In a loose leaf binder, having a rear binder having V structure, said rear structure having a depression, and a label-holder mounted in said depression and having laterally extending lugs embracing parts of the binder for attaohment thereto.
5. A binder having a back with a depressed portion and a label holder in said depressed portion and anchored to said back portion.
6. A binder having a metal back plate With a depressed portion and a label holder attached to said plate in said depressed portion.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name at Cambridge, Massachusetts, county of Middlesex.
" GEORGE H. DAWSON.
