UNITED STAI-Es FRANK A. HARRISON, or CHICAGO, ILLInoIs.;
SAMPLE BooK.
Application led `October 8, 1925. Serial No. 61,167.
This invention relates to improvement-s in loose-leaf sample books or the like and more particularly to the hinge construction thereof, and has for its principal object to provide a simple and durable construction wherein the separate leaves or boards of the book may be readily inserted or withdrawn.
vAs heretofore constructed, sample books of the loose-leaf type have been provided with hinged connections comprising flexible tapes inserted through slots in the margin of each sample board, said slots being reinforced by hinge wires retained in a suitable binding. lIt has been demonstrated, however, that these wires are likely to work loose at their free ends and drop out of the binding, thus destroying the usefulness of the leaves. In my improved construction, I provide an improved arrangement wherein the hinge wires cannot work loose. l furthermore provide a loose-leaf construction whereby the individual boards may be readily detached from the book without withdrawing the tapes .from the book or disturbing the arrangement of adjacent boards.
rlhe invention may best be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is an end View of a book constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view of the book shown in Figure l.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view of one of the pages before the binder is applied, and showing the construction of the hinge member.
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view showing the book cover opened and with the binder fastening devices on the under surface of the cover.
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 4, but showing one of the binder members loosened and illustrating themethod of removing a leaf from the book.
Referring to details of the drawings, 10 indicates a sample book, comprising covers 11 and 12, and a plurality of sample boards or leaves 13, usually of relatively stif material and provided with any suitable means for securing samples for display thereon, such as fabrics, butt-ons, etc. The covers and leaves are bound together along one edge of the book by means of a. plurality of tapes 14 and 15, each being suitably secured at one end to one of the covers 11 and extending through hinged connections in the intermediate leaves 13 and marginal slots 16 in the opposite cover 12, and from thence through 25 indicates a metal piece, preferably formed of wire with its ends 26 looped back upon the straight central portion 27 to form elongated slots 28, 28. rlhe piece 25 lits between the shoulders 21 with the central portion 2l' extending along the margin ofthe recessed portion 20. A binder strip 29 extendsover the central portion 27 and is secured to opposite sides of the board 13 by suitable means, as by glue, the looped end portions 26 extending beyond said binder with the slots 28, 28 in open position to receive the tapes 14 and `15, as clearly shown in Figure 4. In the preferred form shown, the end portions 26 are each bent inwardly at 261L toward the binder strip 29, and their extreme end portions .26b again curve outwardly, the arrangement being such that the tapes may be readily slipped edgewise into their respective slots 28, for detaching or attaching the leaves, as will hereinafter more fully appear.
The method of assembling the book will now be understood. The tapes 14 and l5 are passed through slots 28, 28 in the leaves and slots 16 and lbil in the cover l2, and are then tightened by means of buckles li', 17 so as to provide a secure binding. lhe arrangement is such that when so tightened, the tapes are maintained in registering position with the slots 28, `28 and the leaves cannot be removed. However, by loosening either one of the tapes 14 or 15, as for instance the upper tape 14 as shown in Figure 5, any of the leaves may be removed,
since the loosening of one tape permits the leaf to be moved in a direction toward the tighter tape a sufficient distance to slip the latter tape 16 out of the open end of its slot 28, and then by movement in the opposite direction, the other, or loosened tape l5 may be released from its slot, thus detaching the leaf entirely. In the same manner, a leaf may be replaced at any part of the book, thus affording a so-called loose-leaf construction, which is particularly desirable in sample books and similar devices.
ti tl Further advantages of niy improved construction consist in the economy, simplicity and durability afforded. Furthermore, tlie Wire piece 25 is retained between the shoulders 2l, 21 and has no sharp edges or ends to injure or Work out of the binder.
I claim as my invention 1. In a loose-leatl binder a plurality ot leaves eaeli provided with hinge ineens coniprising;l awire `piece having its center pon tion secured to the margin of said leail and its end portions looped to torrn spaced slots.y covers torthe opposite sides of said leaves, and tapes secured to said envers, in registering losition willi said slots and passing' through the latter.
2. In' a loof1e-leaf hinder a plurality ol leaves each pro vided `with hinge nieans con.
prisme' a wire. piece having' its center portion secured to the margin of said leaf and its end portions looped outwardly there from to forni spaced slots open at their inner ends, coffers for the opposite sides ot saidleavesyand tapes secured to said corel-:i in registering position with said slots1 and passingthrough the latter, and means tor independently` adjusting the lengtlle of the tapes. 3. In a loose-leaf binder a pluralityT of leaves each having a recess at its hinged edge, a Wire piece lifting in said ree-ess and having7 its center portion secured to the mar ein of said leaf and its end portions. looped to torni` spaced slot-s, covers for the opposite sides of said leaves` and tapes. secured to Said 'covers in registering position with said slots and passingtlirough tlieilntter.
4. .In :a loose-leaf `binder a plurality ot' leaves each having a recess at its hinged edge, a wire pieve fitting in Said recess and harina' its' center portion aecured lio the mar 1 ol said leal and its `end lportions loriper" outwardlyY `there'lroin to `forni spaced slots, open at their outer ends, `cover? for the opposite sides ot saidk leavee, and tapee eecured to said rovers in registering position with said slots and passing through the latier, and means ior independently adjusting the lengths oi said tapee.
