Description
y 19, 1936. -L.IL. VIERLING CALENDAR Filed Aug. 16, 1935 Raw w mm m m L y 9 Patented May 19, 1936 UNITED STATES 2,041,097, CALENDAR Lester L. Vierling, Oradell, N. J assignor to American Colortype Company, New York, N. Y., a corporation of New Jersey Application August 16, 1935, Serial No. 36,482
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to calendars and embodies, more specifically, an improved form of calendar by means of which artistic or advertising indicia may be displayed effectively with the 5 usual calendar indicia, the hinged pages of the calendar serving as a means for receiving calendar indicia upon one side thereof, and upon the other side thereof, artistic or appropriate advertising matter.
10 More particularly, the invention comprises a calendar in which the hinged pages may be effectively supported in two positions to resemble a substantially flat object, the pages being so positioned as to maintain them efiectively in the 15 above relationship and prevent the bowing or slipping thereof due to gravity.
Calendars have been constructed heretofore with the pages thereof provided with calendar indicia upon one side and artistic or advertising 20 matter upon the other side, in some of these forms of calendars the pages being supported in an upwardly swung position by means of paper clips. In accordance with the present invention,
a construction is proposed by means of which the calendar pages may be supported in an upwardly swung position by a portion of the cover or back of the calendar in an artistic and attractive fashion. By means of the particular construction of the present invention, the pages which have been swung into an upward position in order that subsequent calendar pages may be displayed, are slightly tensioned by causing them to support, partially, the weight of the calendar, thus maintaining them substantially fiat.
Particular objects and advantages of the invention will appear from a more detailed description thereof in connection with the acccompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of a calendar constructed in accordance with the present invention and folded into a convenient book or pamphlet form. Portions of this figure have been broken away and shown in section;
45 Figure 2 is a plan view of the calendar, in open position with certain of the pages thereof swung upwardly and positioned against the calendar back or cover, being held in such relationship in a'manner to be described presently;
50 Figure 3 is a view in section, taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2, and looking in the direction of the arrows;
Figure 4 is a partial view in section, taken on the line 4--4 of Figure 2 and looking in the 55 direction of the arrows; and
Figure 5 is a partial view, similar to the lower portion of Figure 2, and showing a slightly modified form of calendar wherein a single tab is utilized tomaintain the lower leaves against the cover. 5
The calendar, in accordance with the present invention, is formed with a cover which is hinged at I0 and provided with an upper portion l l and a lower portion l2. Pages l3 are hinged intermediate their ends at [0 and, upon the outer faces thereof (as considered when the upper portion is suspended and the pages are suspended from the hinge Ill) suitable calendar indicia is placed. In Figure 2, the outer face of one of the pages is shown at M, while the inner face of the preceding page is shown at l5, this face being exposed by reason of the fact that such preceding page has been swung upwardly about the hinge Ill and maintained in such upper position" by means of tabs l6 and the supporting nail which form an important part of the present invention.
These tabs are stamped out of the material of the cover along the line I! in Figure 1, and thus permit the upwardly swung pages to be slipped 5 under the tabs to assist in maintaining the pages which have been so positioned in a substantially flat condition against the calendar back or cover.
In the preferred form of the invention, it is proposed to place attractive and artistic subject matter upon the backs l5 of the pages and ornament the tabs 16 in such fashion as to constitute a pleasant and agreeable portion of the artistic subject matter displayed upon the calendar back and pages.
In order that the lower pages may be maintained in flat relationship to the cover, tabs l8 are formed in the lower portion of the cover and. the bottom edges of the suspended pages are inserted under these tabs, as indicated in Figure 2.
In order that the pages which have been swung into an upper position and inserted under the tabs 16 may not bow outwardly and thus eventually slip back into the lower position, the pages and cover are apertured while in the closed position shown in Figure 1. In such position, the apertures in the pages and the cover are aligned. As a result, when the calendar is suspended from an object which extends through these apertures, each subsequent aperture in the calendar pages E3 to be placed over the supported object is spaced a shorter distance from the hinge I0 than the previous aperture, thus subjecting each page to a slight tension by reason of the fact that it helps to support the Weight of the calendar upon the 5 tab I! which may be positioned intermediate the side edges of the cover and, incidentally, may
cover the apertures in the calendar leaves. In
such construction, the apertures may be punched with the lower half of the cover removed from under the punch so that no aperture formed in this cover portion.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that the present invention provides a highly attractive calendar which may be folded', for transmittal, into book or pamphlet form and artistically decorated. The arrangement and positioning of the pages is such as to combine, with the calendar indicia, subject matter of an advertising or artistic nature in such fashion as to present the latwould be ter in a pleasing and effective manner. While the invention has been described with respect to the specific construction shown in the accompanying drawing, it is not to be limited save as defined in the appended claim.
I claim:
A calendar having a, cover folded intermediate the ends thereof and provided with hinge means at the fold, pages formed by sheets folded intermediate the ends thereof and hinged at the hinge 7 means to form pages having outer and inner sides in a suspended position, calendar indicia on the outer sides of the pages, artistic matter on the inner sides of the pages and adapted to be viewed when swung about the hinge into an upper position, tabs stamped out of the material of the cover at each end thereof to support the pages flatwise against the adjacent portion of the cover, and apertures in the cover and pages, said apertures being aligned in the closed position of the pages and cover, whereby the apertures of the upwardly swung pages will be spaced successively nearer the hinge and thus subject the upwardly swung pages to a portion of the weight of the calendar.
