MEMORANDUM TABLET AND HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, IIENRY L. BUSH and ABEL M.- llAMISLE'l, citizens of the United States, residing at. Hopkinton, county of Middlesex, and Salem, county of Essex, respectively, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Memorandum Tablets and Holders, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.

The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in memorandum tablets and holders therefor, of which the following is a 'full, clear and exact description.

More particularly the present invention relates to that class of blank books or tablets employed for memoranda notation, in which a plurality of laterally ad acent sections are provided, each section having a number of separately detachable leaves positioned one above the other.

The object of the invention is to provide means by which such sectional leaves shall be held in position In orderly alignment and secure against the strains incidental to writing thereon, wlule at the same time each sectional leaf shall be easily detachable.

This object is accomplished by an interengaging tablet and holder constructlon which will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings. \Vhile the latter illustrate a good, practical form of the invention as applied particularly to desk use, the details shown may be modified within the scope of the invention as defined by the claims.

In the drawin s, 10 designates one form of the memoran um tablet in its entirety. The tablet preferably has a relatively stifi' back 11 formed in the usual manner, of cardboard or the like, and upon the back 11 are mounted a number of sheets 12, placed one above the other. The sheets 12 are bound together with the back 11 in any suitable manner, along one marginal edge 13,

while the remaining portion of the sheets are free as is usual. The sheets preferably have a row of perforations or indentations 14 extending longitudinally of the tablet adjacent the edge portion 13, so that the sheets may be readily torn from the tablet along the line thus provided. The sheets 12 of the tablet are cut transversely as at 15 to sever the sheets into a plurality of sections 16, each comprising a number of memorandum leaves 17. This construction permits any one of the memorandum leaves 17 to be grasped by the fingers 18, and torn from its section without disturbing the other leaves 17 so that as soon as the subject matter of one memorandum has been attended to, the leaf 17 upon which it is written, may

be torn off to leave in its place the leaf thereunder ready to be written upon. The sections 16 may be given any preferred width, and some sections may be wider than others as shown, to afford space for notes of varying length.

The tablet 1() ismounted in a holder 19 which may be variously constructed, but preferably encloses the marginal edges of the tablet. In the embodiment shown, the holder 19 is of rectangular construction and is opened at the back to permit the tablet to be inserted therein, and is opened at the front to expose the front face of the tablet. The holder consists of side members 20 and end members 21, and each side member preferably has an inwardly-projecting ledge 22 adjacent its front face to extend over the lateral marginal portions of the tablet 10.

The tablet may be conveniently retained in the holder 19 by a back 23, the ends of which may slide in grooves 24. If the memorandum device herein described is used upon a desk or table, it may be desirable to support the device in a slightly inclined position, and this may be readily accomplished by securing a block or rest 25 to the back 23 as clearly shown. i

If the device constructed as described thus far was put to practical use, it would be found defective as will become evident directly. lnvariably the memorandum leaves 17 in some sections 16 would be used up faster than in others, as some memoranda would be preserved a few moments only and laterally. Consequently the memorandum leaves would not be rigid against the strains incidental to writing thereon, thus occasioning much inconvenience and annoyance. Furthermore, under such conditions, if the device should be used in a vertical instead of horizontal position, the free edges of the leaves 17 would sag out of alignment, tending to obscure part of the memoranda and presenting a generally inartistic appearance.

Satisfactory means for overcomin the above objections will now be describe In the embodiment of the invention illustrated, the leaves of the sections 16 have one or more .openings or notches formed in an edge thereof as at 26, and one of the side members 20 of the holder is provided with corresp'ondingly positioned projections 27 arranged to enter the openings or notches 26. The projections 27 may conveniently be formed from a strip of metal 28 secured to the side member 20 and bent to form the desired projections 27. The number and posi- I tion of the projections and corresponding notches may be varied as desired with respect to the sections 16. In the embodiment shown, the projections 27 are equally spaced and the relatively narrow sections 16 at the upper portion of the tablethave but one.

This arrangement is desirable as it permits the number of relatively wide and narrow sections into which a tablet is to be cut to be'varied without necessitating a change in the number or position of the notches 26 along an edge of the tablet 10.

In the foregoing description the memorandum sections 16 have been described as together forming a single'tablet 10, but this is not an essential feature of the invention, since if desired, the sections 16 may be free from each other, or the tablet 16 may be made up of two or more groups of connected sections 16.

The type of holder 19 illustrated is well adapted for desk use, but when the present type of memorandum tablet is to be carried in the pocket, the holder preferably consists of a back having a front cover hinged thereto to fold over the memorandum leaves 17 From the above description, it will be apparent that the leaves 17 of each section are satisfactorily maintained in the desired position secured against the strains of service, while at the same time any one or more of the memorandum leaves may be torn from the tablet without disturbing the other leaves.

What is claimed is:

1. In a device of the class described, in combination, a memorandum tablet having the sheets thereof divided transversely to form a plurality of tablet sections each section having a number of memorandum leaves secured along one of their marginal edges to the tablet, a holder enclosing the marginal edges of the tablet, and cooperating projections and notches on the leaves and holder forming interengaging po sitioning elements between the holder and one end of the memorandum leaves to retain the leaves in place.

2. In a device of the class described, in combination, a memorandum tablet having the sheets thereof cut transversely to form a plurality of tablet sections, each section one above the other, a holder for holding the tablet, and male. and female parts for inter-engagement between the holder and one end of the leaves of the sections to retain the memorandum leaves in place and yet permit individual withdrawal of said end of the leaves at will.

4. In a device of the class described, in combination, a memorandum tablet consisting of a plurality of tablet sections having a number of memorandum leaves positioned one above the other and each provided adjacent one end with an opening, ,a holder for holding the tablet, and projections extendmg from the holder into engagement with the openings of the memorandum leaves to retain the leaves in place and permit individual withdrawal of the leaves from the projections.

5. In a device of the class described, in combinatioma memorandum tablet consisting of a plurality of tablet sections, each section having a number of memorandum leaves positioned one above the other, a holder, for holding the tablet and having lateral edge portions positioned to extend over thelateral marginal edges of the tablet, and male and female parts for inter-engagement between one end of the memorandum leaves and'a side of the holder to hold the leaves in place and yet permit individual withdrawal of said end of the leaves at will.

6. In a device of the class described, in combination, a memorandum tablet consisting of a plurality of tablet sections, each section having a number of memorandum leaves positioned one above the other, a holder for the tablet having an opening at its back to receive the tablet and an opening at its front to expose the momorandum leaves, a closure for the opening at the back of the holder, and male and female parts for inter-en age, ment between the holder and an end 0 the 1,4eaeee memorandum leaves to retain the leaves in place.

7. In a device of the class described -m combination, a memorandum tablet consisting of a plurality of tablet sections, each section having a number of memorandum leaves positioned one above the other and notched at one end, a holder for the tablet having an openin at its back through which the tablet is inserted and an opening at its front to expose the memorandum eaves a closure for the opening at the back of the holder, and projections extending from the holder into engagement with said notches to retain the memorandum leaves in place.

8. In a multiple section memorandum tablet and holder combination, interengaging positioning elements in the holder and in the outside end of the sectional memorandum leaves, which retain the latter in place without interfering with leaf withdrawal.

9. In a multiple section memorandum tablet and holder combination, means for retaining the sectional memorandum leaves in lace without interference withleaf withrawal, including interengaging positioning elements in the holder and in the outside end of the sectional leaves.

10. In a multiple section memorandum tablet and holder combination, sectional memorandum leaves having notches in the outer ends thereof, and corresponding projections within the holder which by interengagement retain the sectional leaves in place without interfering with leaf withdrawal.

11. A tablet for a multiple section memo-- randum tablet and holder combination, consisting of a plurality of tablet sections each having a number of memorandum leaves, and each leaf having positioning means formed in an end thereof to engage corresponding positioning means upon the tablet holder to thereby hold the sectional memorandum leaves in place without interference with leaf withdrawal. 1

12. A tablet for a multiple section memorandum tablet and holder combination, consisting of a plurality of tablet sections each having a number of memorandum leaves connected at one endand positioned one above the other, each leaf having positioning means formed in its opposite end to engage corresponding positioning means upon the tablet holder to hold the sectional memorandum leaves in place without interference with leaf withdrawal.

13. A tablet for a multiple section memorandum tablet and holder combination, consisting of a plurality of tablet sections each having a number of memorandum leaves connected at one end and positioned one above the other, each leaf having a notch formed at its opposite end to engage positioning means upon the tablet holder to hold the sectional memorandum leaves in place without interference with leaf withdrawal.

14. A tablet for a multiple section memorandum and holder combinatiomconsisting of sheets bound to ether along one edge only and perforate; parallel to the bound edge to permit tearing the sheets along the perforatlons, saidsheets bein cut transversely to form a plurality 0 tablet sectionseach having a number of memorandum leaves one above the other, each leaf having positioning means formed at its free end to engage corresponding positioning means upon the tablet holder to hold the sectional memorandum leaves in place without interference with leaf withdrawal.

15. A tablet consisting of sheets bound together along one edge only and having the sheets severed transversely to form a plurality of memorandum sections each havmg a number of memorandum leaves one above the other, said leaves connected to the tablet at one end and having a notch formed in the opposite end of each leaf.

16. In a holder for multiple section memorandum tablets, positioning elements within one side to engage corresponding positioning elements in tablets deslgned to be used in such holder so as to retain the sectional memorandum leaves in lace without interference with leaf with rawal.

17. In a holder for multiple section memorandum tablets, positioning elements ,arranged along one side of the holder to engage corresponding positioning elements in tablets designed to be used in such holder, so as to retain the sectional memorandum leaves in place without interference with leaf withdrawal.

18. In a holder for multiple section memorandum tablets, a plurality of projections arranged along one side of the holder to engage corresponding notches in the sectional leaves of tablets designed to be used in such holder, sons to retain the sectional leaves in place without interference with leaf withdrawal.

19. A holder for multiple section memorandum tablets, having an opening at its back to receive a tablet, and having at its front an opening to expose space for the notation of memoranda on the tablet, a closure for the back of the holder, and'a plurality of transverse projections alon one side of the holder to engage corres on ing notches provided in the leaves 0 said tablet, so as to retain the sectional leaves in place without interference with leaf withdrawal.
