To all .whom it may concern I Se 1t known that I, JOSEPH E. RALPH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Y Newark, `in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and vuseful Improvements in Filing-Envelops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact' description of the invention, such as will enable others' skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to envelop containers for use in cases in cabinets of both the ordinary `and automatic styles for house talking machine disk records vertically filed correspondence or records, and any matters such as are or may be found convenient to keep in such manner.

The automatic receptacles referred to are more particularly those shown in my Patent No. 857,202 issued June 18, 1907, and in my pending application Serial No. 462,143, filed Novembenll, 1908. This invention affords an extension to the usefulness of the matter disclosed in said application.

' A11 obj ect of the invention is to provide containers which normally hold the largest size of matter to be filed, while there may be added to the container means for conveniently ling, matter smaller than the largest size to be filed, the particular matter filed in the present application being disk records and envelops for containing correspondence, etc.

A further vobject of the invention is to. provide a container having the general form of an envelop wherein a portion of the front of the'envelop is free from the back of the envelop, and a suitable textile stay at the point where the front and back of the envelop are connected.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain constructions,

'combinations and arrangements of the parts l which will be hereinafter fully vdescribed and claimed.

The general aim of the present invention is to provide a number of containers or envelops of standard size which carry a large size disk or other matter and' are housed in the top of the smaller disk in a'linement with the remaining disks in the cabinet. Any system may be used for indexing'the containers such as disclosed in the above-named application. In order that the container or con struction of the container or envelop maybe more completely understood reference 'is to be had to the accompanying drawings where-` in two forms of containers or envelops are shown.

Referring to Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, it will be seen that the container has a base portion -1 the lower edge of which may bestraight 4or formed otherwise to coperate with the bottom of a cabinet, while the upper edge thereof is of arcuate form as shown at 2, and may be provided with flat ends as shown at 3, the height of the base 1 from the bottom to the ends 3, being approximately, though not necessarily, one third ofthe height of` the container. Secured `upon the back side of the base 1, is a sheetof heavy paper 4,v the upper portions of whose edges converge as at 5, to meet the top edge ywhich is provided with a finger opening 6. Thefront of the base 1 has secured thereto a strip of thin but tough paper 7 the upper-edges of which converge as at8, to correspond to the lines 5, the top edge of theffront sheet 7 being bent back as at 9, so that the upper portion ofthe rear sheet 4 is visible to disclose any form of index' label or name which may be carried by the upper edge ot' the back sheet to indicate the name of the contained record. )As shown in Fig.l 4, the base l has an appreciable thickness so that in ,order to secure .the front and back sheets of the container it is necessary to bend edges thereof at right angles and secure the saine by any suitable j means, such as lan adhesive. Each of the lectors may have one shank shorter than the other for the purpose of readily inserting the selector withinthe bottom of the container.r

In the preferred form of the invention it will be understood that a disk record may be inserted within the envelop bearing the proper designation on the upper front face of the back -sheet of paper and that the saine may then'be placed within the cabinet where the containers may have their upper corners turned down as in 'an ordinary card index, the circular form of the record admitting of niagara Y the bending ot the corners of the back sheet of paper to uncover the names of the records contained therein. lt will-y be seen that by reason of the linger notch 6 andthe fact lthat the upper edge of the thin front sheet ot paper is belowy the top of the record, it will. be possible to withdraw any record desired-trom the.cabin et containing a number of records closely packed together Without disturbing the container or envelop.

As shawn in Fig. 5, an arrangement is provided whereby smaller disks than that disclosed in. Fig. 1 may be used, the means accomplishing this purpose\ being an auxiljiary envelop or container formed with a base' 24', the lower edge of which is arcuate' as at to conform with the arcuate edge 2 'of the base l, while the upper edge thereof is arcuate as at 26 to conform with the size of the smaller disk record. The lower arcuate edge terminates yin projections 27 on either side thereof which engage the ends 3 of the base 1 to prevent any rotary movement of the auxiliary envelop Within the largerA envelop. This lauxiliary container may be composed of a rear sheet of heavy paper 28, and a front sheet of thin but tough paper 29, and inay be .provided with a stay 30 comparable with the stay 10. The bases 1 and 2l are substantially the saine thickness as the disk, and are made slightly longer than the diameter of the disk so as to prevent scarring or binding of the disk within a containing cabinet. The upper edges of the auxiliary envelop may be tapered as at 31, in a manner'soiiiewhat similar to the taper of the larger envelops, to permit easy turning back ofv the corners to disclose or uncover the names printed upon said envelops. It is to beunderstood of course that the auxiliary envelop may be made so as to contain an)7 size disk the only requisite being that the base 2l of the auX- iliary envelop be of suchlieight as will place the tops'of all oi the records in alinement. The auxiliary envelops are not so Wide asthe larger containing envelops for the purpose of allowing the auxiliary envelops to slip easily within the larger containers.

The form of the invention shown in Fig. 5 is not provided with the yselectorf devices on the lower edge of the base and lavish it understood that these selectors may beused or omitted as the same form no essential part of the envelop, but are useful only in connecti on with an index system suchas already referred to. I
