Be it known that I, BARTHOLOMEW E. Mc- SHEEHY, a citizen of the United States-of lAmerica, residingin Huntingdon, 1n the county of Huntingdon and State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inFolding Papeteries, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention `is to provide a foldingv papeterie which can be cheaply made and affords a practical and compact.l portable container for writing paper and envelopes, and also serves the purpose of a support or lapV table which can be conveniently used for correspondence. v l,

The structureis intended chiefly for soldiers and travelers, being designed to permit of carrying a supply of envelopes and paper in. a small, neat package, which may also serve to hold ithe paper inconvenient Aposition for writing.

. An additional purpose is to make the struc` ture sufliciently cheap so that itcan be used in place of the ordinary box container and sold at a price which would ordinarily permit it to be discarded when the supply of paper and envelopes is exhausted.

An additional object contemplated by the K invention is to retain the sheets of paper and envelopes independently .of one another, and

securely held, while also permitting immea diate access to either the envelopes or paper,

without disturbing the other.

The invention consists, briefly,- of an envelope-containing section andV a sheet-holding section, the. two being preferably formed integrally and united byy a hinge portion. In

vthe preferred arrangement, the writing sheets are attached to the sheet-holding section in the form of a writing pad or tablet, the back of which is secured tothe :sheetholding section, although this may be accomplished in other ways, as by arranging a series of loose writing sheets within a `pocket or case which would be attached to the sheet-holding section." The envelopecontaining section is provided witha plural- Aity off envelopepockets which are preferably open at Aboth ends, to afford a cheap and simplifiedconstruction, and having one side attached to the envelope-containing sec ltion.A The latter includes a back which is` provided with an extension that is adapted to; overlie the outer open endsof theenvelope pockets, and also a, portion of -their'eX-T posed sides, and this arrangement holds the envelope pockets securely inV placeand also affords a sightly and cheap construction. In order to strengthenthe deviceland` make it durable enough for the purposes required,

without unduly increasing its cost of manufacture, I prefer to reinforce the hinge portion by means of la strip of lfabricvor similar material, placed over and attached to the cardboard from which thepther parts are preferably constructed. "The repeated bending of the two sections with reference to each other would quickly separate the cardboard along such a folded line, unlessy a very heavy thickness 'were.used, and by ltaking advantage of suchy a reinforcing m'e,.ans aJ much thinner and cheaper grade of cardboard can be used for the bodyl of the folder.

In the illustrated arrangement, the writingpaper is in the form of a pad or tablet D, the back of which, E, is glued, or otherwise iiXedly attached to the sheetholding section A. In order to protect the edge of the pad D, as Well as to present a 7 neat and sightly appearance when the device' is folded, Ilemp'loy' a flap, includinga vertical portion F, adapted to overliethe adjacent edge of the tablet D, and a hori- Zontal portion F', adapted to overlie the adjacent portion of the top of the Writing pad when the parts are folded, as illustrated inFig. 2. y

The envelopeJco-ntaining section is providedv With a plurality of envelope pockets designated by G and G. Each of the envelope pockets is preferably open at; both vends and consists of a single strip of cardboard bent upon itself and attached along its meeting edges, as shown in Fig.' 5. Insome cases, it may be preferable to have the Writing sheets in loose form instead of in tablet form, and to answersuch requirements, I may further modify the structure as shown in Figs.
