Box 230, Chilton, Wis. 53014 Filed Oct. 23, 1967, Ser. No. 677,167 Int. Cl. B65d 85/00; B42f /00 US. Cl. 206-63 5 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to a letter pack suitable to be enclosed in a waterproof Wrapping and for carrying in the pocket of a soldier or anyone traveling.
Heretofore no one has supplied a packet of writing sheets designed and arranged in such a way as to provide the need of a foot soldier or field traveler to write a message at any moment in any place and fold the same into an envelope for mailing.
The pack of the present invention generally consists of a semi-stiff cover material which may be designed like a match book and which contains a pack of folded thin writing sheets each being arranged to provide for writing thereon while supported by the pack held in the hand and then being separately foldable into an envelope with provision for gluing the flap to seal the same for mailing.
The pack is pereferably constructed to contain a group of stamps and also a small ball point writing pen so that the needs of the user are fully supplied.
Cutting of the envelope along the flap permits unfolding into a single sheet containing the written message on the inside.
The best mode presently contemplated for constructing the letter pack of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the pack with parts broken away to illustrate the construction;
FIG. 2 is a side elevation of the pack;
FIG. 3 is a perspective view of the pack with the cover open and one sheet unfolded for writing thereon;
FIG. 4 shows a sheet in perspective severed from the pack and ready for folding into an envelope;
FIG. 5 is a perspective view showing the sheet partially folded into an envelope;
FIG. 6 is a plan view of the back side of the folded envelope after sealing;
FIG. 7 is a side elevation of a packet of sheets individually folded;
FIG. 8 is a side elevation of a modified packet of sheets folded together in a pad;
FIG. 9 is a view similar to FIGURE 1 and showing yet another modification of the pack;
FIG. 10 is a perspective view of the pack of FIG. 9 with the cover open and the sheets unfolded;
FIG. 11 is a view of the pack of FIG. 9, showing the right panel folded back with the left panel folded over for writing on one side thereof;
FIG. 12 is a rear view showing the left panel in reverse folded position for writing on the other side thereof; and
FIG. 13 is a front view of the pack of FIG. 12, showing the center panel exposed for writing thereon.
3,458,034 Patented July 29, 1969 As shown in FIGS. 1-8, the letter pack comprises a match book type of cover 1 having a short flap 2 secured upon a packet 3 of writing sheets by a pair of staples 4 or other suitable means, leaving the free edge of flap 2 for receiving the free end 5 of the cover therebeneath as in closing a match book.
Between staples 4 and the fold 6 of flap 2 a pair of slots 7 provide a central loop 8 for receiving a small ball point pen 9.
The packet 3 comprises a plurality of sheets of Writing paper, each sheet 10 being secured beneath the flap 2 by an edge portion 11 having a perforate line 12 for severance of the sheet 10 from the packet.
The sheets 10 may be folded together from a single pad as illustrated in FIG. 8 or they may be folded individually as illustrated in FIG. 7.
Each sheet 10 has approximately three times the width of cover 1 plus a sealing flap 13 and has three longitudinal folds 14, 15 and 16 providing three panels 17, 18, and 19 plus the flap 13.
The securing edge portion 11 is initially secured by the perforate line 12 to the lower edge of the central panel 18. The right hand panel 19 is folded over the panel 18 along fold 16 in packet 3. The left hand panel 17 is folded over panel 19 along fold 15 in packet 3.
When it is desired to write on the upper sheet the cover 1 is opened fiat, the packet 3 is folded open flat and then tipped relative to the cover to permit panel 17 of the top sheet to be folded out from beneath the pack, in FIG. 7, followed by folding of panel 19 out and reversely back of the cover. In the case of a packet 3 as illustrated in FIG. 8 the unfolding operation is the same as described for FIG. 7 except that only the upper individually folded sheet is tipped outwardly at an angle to the cover and remaining sheets to effect the release of panel 17.
The operator can hold the pack in one hand and write successively on panels 17, 18 and 19, after which he refolds the panel 10 over panel 18 and then folds panel 17 over panel 19. He can then address the outside of the envelope which will be on the upper surface of panel 17 following the above described folding operation.
At a convenient time, which may await addressing of the envelope the writer tears the sheet along line 12 to sever it from the pack.
The fold 14 joins the otherwise free edge of panel 17 to flap 13, and panel 17 carries two folded end flaps 20 which are first unfolded and then folded over the back of panel 18 after closing of the envelope.
Flap 13 is then folded over the back of the envelope and glued down to flaps 20 and also the central back portion of panel 18 to seal the envelope.
The glue on flap 13 may be provided thereon and preserved by a removable cover strip 21 to provide a seal that does not need licking.
The free end edge 5 of cover 1 may have a small envelope 22 secured thereto for containing postage stamps to be used on the envelopes.
The entire letter pack may be conveniently slipped into a substantially waterproof wrap for keeping the packet 3 and stamps dry in the pocket of the Writer.
Another embodiment of the invention is shown in FIGS. 9-13. In this embodiment, a cover 23 similar to cover 1 and having a short flap 24 and stapled packet 25 of writing sheets is provided. The lower edge 26 of the cover is received beneath flap 24 to close the cover. Id this embodiment, the sheets in the packet are not folded transversely, but longitudinally, providing panels 27, 28, 29 and sealing flap 30. (See FIG. 10.) The sheet is secured beneath flap 24 by an edge portion 31 having a perforate line 32 for severance. Panel 29 is provided with folded end flaps 33 similar to flaps 20.
In this instance, and as shown in FIG. 11, the cover is opened and end panel 29 and sealing flap 30 are preferably folded behind the cover to expose the top side of end panel 27, which is folded over center panel 28. The message may then be written on the top of panel 27, using the inside or front of the cover therebenath as a backing. To continue the message, and as shown in FIG. 12, panel 27 is folded back behind the cover and the inside of the panel is used for writing, with the other side or back of the cover used as a backing. The message may be further continued by writing on center panel 28, with the inside of the cover again used as a backing. (See FIG. 13.)
The sheet may then be removed from the cover and folded into an envelope for mailing, as previously described.
I claim:
