Bloom, Rye, N.Y., assiguors to Tension Envelope tiorporation, Kansas Qty, Mo a corporation of Delaware Filed Jan. 27, 1964, Ser. No. 349,494 8 (Ilairns. (Cl. 229-74) This invention relates to a label which provides a pocket for containing an enclosure, such as an invoice, statement, and the like, pertaining to a mailing piece on which such label is attached.
A principal object of the invention is to provide a label of this character that may be produced inexpensively with standard envelope making machinery.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a label pocket construction which permits easy insertion of an enclosure prior to application of the label to a mailing piece; to provide a label pocket with upper and lower panels that are interconnected along two adjacent edge portions thereof to form an angular seat or stop to locate the enclosure and leave the opposite edges unconnected for facilitating insertion of the enclosure; to provide the upper panel of the label pocket with projecting portions that overlie edges of the lower panel to close said unconnected sides when the label is pasted onto a mailing piece; and to provide the upper panel with a window opening for exposing a mailing address on the enclosure.
When label pockets are applied to rather thick and rigid mailing pieces, they are difiicult to open for removal of the enclosure because it is difficult to lift an opening flap or to get a letter opener or the like into the pocket without damaging the enclosure. Therefore, further objects of the invention are to cover the window opening by a patch having a portion capable of being seen through fixed to the inner face of the upper panel, and which has a loose gripping portion to facilitate grasping thereof for making an opening in the pocket as the side edges of the patch guide the lines of tear; and to provide the lower panel with an extension that underlies the gripping portion of the window patch to prevent sticking thereof to the mailing piece when paste or other adhesive is applied for securing the label to the mailing piece.
In accomplishing these and other objects of the invention, we have provided improved structure, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the face side of a label pocket constructed in accordance with one form of the present invention, and showing attachment thereof to a mailing piece.
FIG. 2 is a similar view showing the manner in which the gripping portion of the window patch is pulled upwardly and backwardly longitudinally over the window opening, so that the side edges of the patch guide the lines of tear, thereby opening up a relatively wide opening across the face of the label to permit removal of the enclosure.
FIG. 3 is a plan view of the inner face of a blank from which the label pocket is folded, and showing the window patch applied thereto.
FIG. 4 is a plan view of the label pocket showing the back face thereof which is to be attached to a mailing piece by paste or other adhesive.
FIG. 5 is an enlarged perspective section of the label pocket, taken transversely through the window opening.
PEG. 6 is a similar section through the label pocket, but in a direction longitudinally through the window opening.
FIG. 7 is a plan view of the inside face of a blank for providing another form of the invention.
Bdhhflt Patented Aug. 10, 194
FIG. 8 is a perspective view of the label pocket form from the blank of FIG. 7, as viewed from the back fa side thereof, a portion of the panel being broken aw to show the window patch.
FIG. 9 is a perspective view of the modified lat pocket attached to a mailing piece.
FIG. 10 is a section of the line 1010 of FIG. 9.
FIG. 11 is a section on the line 1111 of FIG. 9.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, and first the form of the invention illustrated in FIGS. 1 to inclusive:
1 designates a label pocket constructed in accordar with the present invention and which is formed from blank 2, shown in FIG. 3. The blank 2 may be of em lope material and is divided by a line of fold 3 to provi generally rectangular panels 4 and 5 to overlie one anotl when the blank is folded on the fold 3. Extending frc an edge of the panel 4 at the end of the line of fold 3 i: flap 6, adapted to be folded on a line of fold 7 that st stantially registers with the corresponding edge 8 of t panel 5. The flap 6 is to be secured to one or the otl face of the panel 5 by an adhesive 9. The margii portion 19 of the panel 4 that is directly opposite the fi 6 project beyond the corresponding edge 11 of the par 5. The remaining marginal edge of the panel 4 has spac apart extensions 12 and 13 to provide a recess 14 the. between, having a depth so that the inner edge 15 there preferably aligns with the adjacent end of the flap 6 a corresponding end of the marginal portion 10. The pa] 4 is provided in the body thereof with a window ope-ni 16 in alignment with the recess 14 and spaced inwardly the edge 15, to provide a portion 17 of the blank the. between. The recess 14 is slightly greater in Width th the adjacent end of the window opening 16. The bla 2 may have slits l8 and 19 that may extend inwarr from the terminals of the edge 15, for a purpose la described. The ends of the flap 6 and marginal extc sions 1i and 12-13 preferably converge slightly a join with connecting outer edges of the flap and ext: sions on curves 20. The juncture of the edge 15 of t recess 14 are also preferably curved, as indicated at i -In carrying out the invention, the window is cove] with a patch 23 consisting of a material capable of bei seen through and having greater tensile strength and ability than the material of the blank, so that the pat may be used as a pull tab in tearing through the pane to which it is attached. The patch 23 is of greater len; and height than the Window opening 16, to provide portion to be sealed over the window opening to the in] face of the panel 4 by an adhesive 24. The adhesive rr extend around the window opening 16, as indicated dotted lines (FIG. 3). The end of the patch that is sea to the portion 17 projects loosely across the recess 14 provide a pull tab 25. The slits l8 and 19 prefera terminate near the longitudinal side edges 26 and 27 the patch, and the adhesive 24 preferably terminates side of the slits l8 and 19, so that when the tab is pulI outwardly from the recess 14 the slits 18 and 19 st tears which continue along the edges 26 and 27 of patch when the label pocket is to be opened, as la described.
The back panel 5 is shaped at the edge thereof oppos the fold 3 so that the corners have notches 28 and (FIGS. 3 and 4) to expose face portions of the ext sions 12 and 13 of the panel 4, but the intermediate p tion 30 covers the portion of the patch that provides pull tab 25, to prevent any possibility of the paste or otl adhesive that is used in attaching the completed la pocket to a mailing piece from contacting the pull t- In order to further protect the pull tab, the outer edge thereof terminates short of the edge 32 of the portion 1 he patch 23 may be cut and applied to the blank, the panel 5 folded over the front panel 4, and the flap lded over to be sealed with the adhesive 9 by means tandard envelope making machinery, to provide the l pocket illustrated in FIG. 4.
will be noted that the product thus provided has a :et 33 (FIGS. 5 and 6) closed at two sides by the s 3 and 7 and open at the other two sides. The enclo- 34 to be inserted is pushed cornerwise through the l sides and seated squarely within the angle provided in the folds 3 and '7. When thus inserted, the enlre 34 is completely contained under the back panel 5, ldicated in dotted lines (FIG. 4), and the address 35 3011 appears within the Window opening 16 to serve as nailing address. he label pockets as above described are supplied by the ufacturer to the user in the form shown in FIG. 4.
the label is furnished without adhesive on the back :of, the user applies paste or other adhesive to the 1 panel 5 of the label pocket so that the paste extends the projecting portions 19, 12 and 13 of the front :1 4. Then when the label pocket is placed upon th ing piece 36 as shown in FIG. 1, the label pocket mes attached thereto. An alternate method of afiixthe label pocket is to apply the paste to an area of mailing piece 36 to be occupied by the label pocket, then the back of the label pocket is pressed thereust.
is obvious that the adhesive might be preapplied to label and dried during manfacture of the label, and a the label is to be used the adhesive is moistened to e it sufficiently tacky to stick to the mailing piece. the adhesive when applied in the manufacture of the l may be and remain tacky until used. Prior to us 1e label the adhesive can be protected with a proteccovering that can be peeled off just prior to use. particular application and character of adhesive is 1 part of the invention. 'hen the label is applied, the pocket 33 is securely :d to retain the enclosure 34 and without smearing :of with paste. The pull tab also remains clean free of paste because it is protected by the underlying ision of the back panel, as shown in FIGS. 4 6.
hen the mailing piece 36 is received by the addressee, enclosure is easily removed by grasping the loose portion 25 of the patch 23 between the thumb and finger and pulling it upwardly within the recess 14, to e the slits 18 and 19 to start tears along the side s 26 and 27 of the patch. The pull on the tab 25 is inued toward the opposite side of the label pocket, town in FIG. 2, with the side edges of the patch conng to guide the lines of tear. When the tears are comd, a relatively large opening 37 is formed through h the enclosure is readily removed (FIG. 2).
1e form of the invention shown in FIGS. 7 to 11, lsive, is formed from a blank 37 having a line of fold lroviding a front panel 39 and a back panel 4%). In form the window opening 41 in the front panel 39 ids parallel with the fold 38. The side edge 42 of )anel 39 extends beyond the edge 43 of the panel 449. opposite side of the panel 39 has spaced apart exons 44 and 45, to provide a recess 46 therebetween ibstantial alignment with the window opening 41. vering the window opening 41 on the inside face of blank is a transparent patch 48 secured about the low opening 41 by an adhesive 47, and which patch l 39 to provide a margin 54 (FIGS. 8 and 11) .to cooperate with the exposed faces 55 and 56 of the extensions .4 and 4S and the marginal face 57 that lies between the edges 42 and 43 in accommodating paste or other adhesive when the paste is spread over the outer face 61 of the panel 49.
In this form of the invention, the seam provided by the adhesive 51 and the fold 38 provides the closed sides of the pocket. Thus the construction is simplified through elimination of the flap 6 of the first described form of the invention. Otherwise, the construction follows that of the first described form of the invention.
The enclosure 58 is placed in the pocket 59 between the front and back panels through the free edges thereof until it seats in the fold 38 and the seam that is effected by the adhesive 51. In this position the enclosure 58, which is outlined in dotted lines, FIG. 8, is completely protected by the panel as.
In applying the label pocket to a mailing piece so, the surface 51 of the panel 46 and the portions of the panel 39 that project beyond the edges thereof are coated with a paste or other adhesive. The label pocket is then placed upon the mailing piece 69 and pressed in position, as shown in FIG. 9. Or, like in the first form, the paste may be applied to the face of the mailing piece and the label pocket pressed upon the wet paste.
The enclosure 58 is removed in the manner described in the first form of the invention. The loose tab 49 is gripped between the thumb and forefinger and pulled upwardly through the recess 46 so that the slits 13 and 19 start tears of the front panel 33 and which continue along the side edges of the window patch 48 as the tab 49 is V pulled across the window opening.
