This invention relates to certain novel improvements in sorting devices and has for its principal object the provision of an improved constructioniof this character which will be highly efficient in use and economical in manufacture. I

To prevent the base board from scratching or ot erwise damaging the surface upon which it is supported, there is provided at each corner of the base board rubber feet 1-1, Fig. 2. These feet 11 are secured to the base board, which may be of any approved material, in any approved or well-known manner. i

Secured to the base board and extending longitudinally with respectthereto, is a strip 12 preferably formed of suitable metallic material. The end 13 of the strip 12 is disposed inwardly from the corresponding end of the base board whereby to provide animcovered surface of the base board for the re-' ception of printed advertising or direction matter. This strip 12 is secured to the top surface of the base board 10 through the I11- dium of screws 14. Formed in the strip 12 in ga longitudinal direction with respect thereto, are two parallel rows of loops 15;

These loops 15 in the present instance are struck from the bodyof the strip 12 to provide bearing sleeves for trunnions 16. formed at the end portions of wire bails or clips 17. These bails 17 provide hinge connection between the strip 12 and the separating leaves or. sheetslS and the connection between the bail 17 and the leaf or sheet 18 is accomplished in the following manner.

. Each clip 17 is associated with its respective sheet 18 by mounting the bight portion 19 of the clip within a folded metallic clip 20. This clip 20is secured to its respective sheet 18 by disposing its limb portions on opposite sides of the sheet and inserting a ring-like protuberance 22 through a hole23 formed, in the sheet. The ring-like protuberance 22 after beinginserted through the hole clip is attached. *Thisprojection 25 functions to cooperate with the notch 26 to prevent' lateral movement of the sheet to which it is. attached, thereby holding the sheet in proper alignment with the next succeeding sheet of the sorting device.

The printed matter to be sorted is disposed in its proper pocket provided by the separating leaves or sheets and by reason of the simplicity of connection between the leaves or'sheets, it will be manifest that convenient access may be had to any one of the leaves for depositing printedmatter in the pockets thereof during sorting.

In use, the device is placed upon the surface ofa desk or table and in such position slipping of the device during use is prevented'by reason of the rubber feet.

The leaves may be formed of any approved material such as cardboard or the like and if desired the leaves may be divided into sets of different lengths. I

By reason of the projections 25 on the clips and their engagement in the notches 26, the leaves will be held in proper alignment with respect to each other-and be also more rigidly connected to their clips. The device when completed and when constructed in accordance with the description herein set forth will be light in structure, thereby facilitating expeditious moving about by the user.

By the novel manner of connecting the separating leaves or sheets to the strip it will be seen that the same can be easily removed when worn out or for substituting different sizes therefor. This is accomplished by springing the trunnions from enengagement with their respective bearing sleeves. i

While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into efi'ect, this is capable of variation and modification. without departing from the spirit or the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modificatiigis ,as come yvithigi the scope pivotally connected to the base board and including hight portions having rejections formed thereon, and clip elemen s securing the bight portions to the separating members, said separating members having notches formed therein for the reception of said projections;

In a sorting device, a base board, a strip secured to the base board and extending longitudinally with respect thereto, priotnberances formed on said strip providing bearing sleeves, clips having end portions bent to provide trunnions for engagement in the bearing sleeves, a plurality of separating members adapted to be disposed in facial abutment with respect to each other, and clip members secured to eorrespondin end portions of the separating members an bent to receive portions of the'clips.

In a sorting device, a base' member, a strip secured to the base member and having parallel rows of protuberances formed thereon providin bearing sleeves, clips formed substantially U-shaped and'having end portions providing trunnions adapted to' datachably engage in said sleeves. a plurality of separating members, and clips secured to the separating members and bent to receive the bight portions of the first-mentioned clips whereby to connect tho separating members to the strip for individual turning in opposite directions u themselves.

In a sorting device, a st 7 p having loops struck from the body thereof providing parallel rows of bearing sleeves, a plurality of separating members, substantially U-shaped clips secured to corresponding end portions of the separatingmembers, said separating members having notches formed in said corresponding end portions, and connecting elementshaving end portions bent to provide trunnions for engagement in the bearing sleeves, said elements having bight portions connected to the separating members through the medium of said clips and said night portions having projections formed thereon for engagement in said notches and cooperating with the clips to provide substantially rigid connection between said elements and said separating members. i

5. In a sorting device, a stm'p having loops struck fromthe body thereof providing parallel rows of bearing sleeves, a plurality of res ondin end ortions and connectin elements having end portions bentto provide trunnions for detachableengagement in the bearing sleeves, said elements having bight portions connected to the separating members through the medium of said clips and said bight portions having projections formed thereon for engagement in said notches and cooperating with the clips to provide substantially rigid connection between said elements and said separating members. a

In a sorting device, a strip having loops struck from the body thereof providing parallel rows of bearing sleeves, a plurality of separating members, substantially U-shaped clips secured to corresponding end portions of the separating members, said separating members having notches formed in said corresponding end portions, andconnecting elements having end portions bent to provide trunnions for engagement in the bearing sleeves, said elements having bight portions connected to the separating members through the medium of said clips and said bight portions having projections formed thereon for engagement in said notches and coo crating with the clips to provide substantia 1y rigid connection between said elements and said separating members, and a base member supporting said strip.

7. In a sorting device, a strip having loops struck from the body thereof providing parallel rows of bearing sleeves, a plurality of separating members, substantially U-shaped clips secured to corresponding end portions of the separating men'ibers, said separating members having notches formed in said corresponding end portions, and connecting elements having end portions bent to provide trunnions for detachable engagement in the bearing sleeves, said elements having bight portions connected to the separating members through the medium of said clips and said bight portions having projections formed thereon for engagement in said notches and cooperatin with the clips to provide substantially rigid connection between said elements and said separating members, and a base member supporting said strip. a r
