MILEAGE RECORD HOLDER FOR AUTOMOBILES Original Filed July 8, 1929 7a OIL CHANGED GREASEB AIWATEREB Patented May 31, .1932
*uN TED STATES NATHAN M. STONE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS MILEAGE RECORD HOLDER FOB AUTOMOBILES Applicatioufiled July 8, 1929, Serial No. 376,791. Renewed October 24,1931.
The invention relates to mileage record holders for automobiles, and its principal object is to provide improved means forholding'a pad of paper in convenient posltion 1n an automobile for ready access thereto, where-,
by notations may be made thereon regarding the mileage of the automobile as shown by the speedometer. It is well known that; it 1s important to completely change theoll in the crank case of anautomobile after 1t has been driven a predetermined number of miles,
to grease the car, and to water the battery,
and Various attempts have been made to keep a record of the mileage, so that proper at- 1 tention may be given the automobile at the proper time. I
In accordance with the present lnventlon,
a receptacle is provided for holding a pad of paper which has clamping means, whereby ing matter, and through the other ofwhich is displayed a portion of the pad containing thenotations.
V The invention consists inthe several novel i 0 features hereinafter fully set forth and V claimed. V t
The invention is clearly illustrated n the drawings accompanying this specification 1n which- 7 Figure 1 is a plan of a mileage recorder embodying a simple form of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is an under plan of the device; Fig. 3 is a plan of the device opened out to expose the interior thereof, a certain advertising card and backing plece being partially broken away to illustrate parts which would be otherwise hidden from view;
Fig. 4 is avertical cross section taken on the line 4' l of Fig. 1, and showing the de; vice clamped to afragment of the steering post of an automobile; and
Fig. 5 is an end view rectionof the arrow 5 in Fig. 1 with a certain clamping loop omitted.
Referring to said drawings, the reference character 6 designates a receptacle composed of bottom'and'top members 7 and-8 hinged togetherat 9. The two members 7 and 8 are formed of light gauge sheet metal struck up with suitable dies, and the 'member 37 is formed with marginal flanges .10, 11 and 12" which extend at right angles to abottom wall 13 and form a rectangular or square box-like structure. As a preference,the bottom wall 13 may be formed with a notch 1 adjacent one edge of which furnishes meanswhereby the top member of the receptacle may be read: ily pushed open to obtain access to the interior of the receptacle. w I
The top or cover member 8 is formed with side flanges 15 which are struck up from top wall 16, which flanges, when the recepta ole is closed, overlap the side flanges 11 of the boX-likeportion 7 of the receptacle. Thetop. wall 16 of the cover'portion Sis formed with, two sight openings 17 and 18 through which the advertising material and'the pad containing the mileage data are visible. The ends of'the top wall 16 are bent back upon themselves to form lips 19 that extend parallel with'the top wall and, provide groovesfor receiving the ends of a, transparent sheet of material 20, such as celluloid a business card 1 21 and a piece of backing material '22, such. as metal placed under the top wall 16iand held thereon by the'lips l9, Thebusiness card 21 may contain suitable printed matter whichis displayed through the sightop 17, and both said business card 21 and -;the metal backing piece 22are formed with sight openlngs 23 and 24'co-incident with the sight opening 18 in the cover member 8, wherebya portion of the memorandum pad 25 is visible at all times through the sight opening[18..; The side flanges 11 and 15 extendslightly be-, yond one end of the box and cover :portions the form of cars 26 through which. are :in-
serted rivets 27 that hingedly connect the two members of therreceptacle togetherj: The memorandum pad 25 may comprise a number of cards or sheets of paper 28, one looking in the di cornerof the uppermost one of which is shown as bent upward in Fig. 3 to show the corner of the one below, and said sheets are fastened together by staples or the like 29. The pad is of a size to fit conveniently in the box or lower member 7 of the receptacle. On each side of the median line of the sheets 28 (defined by the staples 29) are printed appropriate words having reference to the changing of oil, the greasing of thecar, and the watering of, the battery, as, for instance, the words, Oil Changed, Greased, Bat.
Watered, adjacent which words are blank to expose-the new notations through the sight theen opening 18, and when both ends of a sheet have been filled in, the half of the sheet upon which the first notion was made ma be torn of and new notations may be ma e on the osed portion of the sheet therebelow.
11 using the device, the person makes notations on the exposed portion of the pad indicatin the mileage shown by the speedometer at t e time of changing oil, greasing the car, or watering the battery. This information is always before him and he can readily determine when the automobile has been driven through the predetermined number of miles allowed before attention must be given to the changing of oil, greasing the car, or watering the battery.
For securing the device upon the steering post ofan automobile, a clamp 30 is provided which, as shown, comprises a bracket memher 31 spot welded, as at 32, or otherwise secured tothe bottom portion 13 of the box-like member 7 of the receptacle, and a flexible metal 33 bent in the form of a loop 34 which surrounds the steering post 35 of the automobile. The bracket member 31 is formed with a yoke-like portion 36 through which the ends of the flexible strip 33 pass, and a bolt 37 extends through apertures in said yoke-like portion 36 and enters apertures 38 formed in the strip 33. One end of the strip may contain a number of apertures in order to make the loop adjustable for steeringposts of diflerent diameters. The loop 34 bemg laced around the steering post and d of the strip passed through the yokeli'he part 36, the bolt 37 may be passed through said yoke-like'portion and through two op posite perforations in the end portions of the strip, a nut 39 laced upon the bolt, and the latter tighten up to securely clamp the device upon the steering post.
' Ichrim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
