It is a general object of the invention to provide a writing pad holder, such as a folder or binder for sheets of paper or the like, with an identification device adapted to provide a visual identification of the owner of the corresponding holder to a nearby person.
It is a more specific object of the invention to provide a writing pad holder with an identification device which is arranged to selectively display the owners identification in one of a plurality of horizontal and/or vertical directions such as -to be particularly viewed when looked at from' that direction.
It is another object of the invention to provide a writing pad holder which includes a visual identification device which is also constructed to print the owners identification on the paper carried by the holder.
It is a further object of the invention to provide-a writing pad holder which includes a visual identifi cation plate and a cover having a window for pivoting of the identificationplate between an erected position when the cover is open into operative position and a flat position to display visual identification when the cover is closed.
The invention will now be described in detail with reference to a preferred embodiment thereof which is illustrated, by way of example, in the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. I is a perspective view of a writing pad holder according to the invention shown in closed position;
FIG. 2 is a plan view of the same writing pad holder shown in open position;
FIG. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the writing pad holder particularly illustrating the identification elements thereof; I
FIG. 4 is a crosssectional view as seen along line 4-4 in FIG. 5; 1
FIG. 5 is a partial plan view of the writing pad holder particularly showing the identification plate in flat position;
F IG. 6 is a plan view of the whole identification plate assembly according to the invention;
FIG. 7 isa side 'view illustrating the printing by the identification plate;
FIG. 8 is an elevation view illustrating the insertion of an inking pad formingpart of the present invention; and
7 FIG. 9 is a cross sectional view' as seen along line 9-9 in FIG. 8.
The illustrated writing pad holder includes a base panel 1, a cover panel 2 and-an edge panel 3 which are integrally formed into a folder. A three-ring binder mechanism 4 is secured against the inner side of the edge panel 3 in any suitable manner to carry loose leaves onto the base panel in position for writing thereon. A clip 5 is secured to the base panel 1 and is arranged to hold fast or retain the sheets of paper into the writing position.
A base plate 6 is held flat against the inner face of the base panel 1 by screws 7 engaged into the slots 8 and such as to allow transverse sliding of the base plate relative to the adjacent edge of the'base panel. A stopper 9 is secured to the base panel 1 to engage the inner edge of the base plate 6 and limits the inward displacement thereof.
A cup-shaped support 10 is rotatably mounted onto the base plate 6 and is integrally formed of a bottom portion 11, a tubular portion 12 and a stub pivot 13.
The latter projects downwardly from the bottom portion 11 and is pivotally secured to the base plate to define an elevation axis for the pivoting of the whole support 10. A carrier or piston 14 is inserted into the cupshaped support 10 for lengthwise displacement into the latter. A radial groove 15 extends into the upper or outer face of the piston member 14. A slot 16 extends through the tubular portion 12 and lengthwise of the latter. A spline or internal ridge 17 is integrally formed with the tubular portion 12 and extends lengthwise thereof in engagement into a corresponding notch in the periphery of the piston or carrier 14. A spring 18 is mounted into the cup-shaped support 10 and an ranged to bias the latter outwardly.
An identification plate 19 is pivotally carried by the piston 14 and includes'a supporting post 20 having its free lower end pivoted into the groove 15 by a transverse .pivot 21. As may be seen, the supporting post 20 pivots into a plane passing through the groove 15 and the slot 16 and preferably perpendicular to the base panel I and base plate 6. On the outer face of the identification plate 1, there is mounted a nameplate or separate indicia 22 forming the name of the owner of the writing pad holder.
On the inner face of the identification plate 19, there are secured suitable rubber strips 23 forming a rubber stamp hearing all the necessary and desired information to fully identify the owner, such as the name, grade, year and school of a student. An ink pad including a metal cover 24 and a felt 25 are formed with lateral flanges 26 arranged to slidably engage complementary flanges along the opposite sides of the rubber 5. When, for instance, the student using it is in the classroom, he opens the writing pad holder and pivots the identification plate 19 about the transverse pivot 21 to the erected position in which the indicia 22 or nameplate is outwardly displayed to be seen by the teacher at the front of the class, as best shown in FIG. 3. If, for instance, the teacher is not directly in front of the student, the latter may rotate the identification plate 19 at an angle about the afore-mentioned elevation axis in the direction of the teacher.
.,The student may identify each page of his notes or work by pulling out the cover formed by the ink pad, pivoting the identification plate about the transverse axis and pressing down in the direction of the arrow 30 in FIG, 7. Before closing the holder, the ink pad is slid into place to cover the rubber stamp and thereby prevent smearing the uppermost sheet of the pad. it must be noted that the slot 16 allows the rubber stamp to always rest fiat onto the uppermost sheet no matter how many sheets remain into the pad.
If the user of the writing pad holder does not have to take notes but wants to nevertheless display his identification, hepulls-out the base plate 6 such that the cupshaped support 10 and the identification plate 19 stand outside the'corresponding edge of the base panel 1 and cover portion 3. The latter may then be closed while the identification stands erected into its display position.
Obviously, many changes in the details of the invention may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims. For instance, the particular construction of the pivoting support, theidentification plate and the paper retaining" means may be changed without changing their desired function.
Theterm' writing pad holder is used as a generic term into the disclosure andthe claims and is meant to mean any type of device adapted to hold one or more sheets of paper, map,drawings orthe like in flat position for writing thereon. it may, for instance, include a single panel without a cover.
