My invention relates to devices for holding loose-leaf binder sheets during the operations of removing sheets from the binder and inserting them in the binder. It is particularly adapted for uselwith the type of binder having a multiplicity of straight posts and using comparatively short sheets that extend only a portion of the length of the binder and are provided with a multiplicity of holes spaced apart even fractions of the distance between binder posts, whereby each sheet may have any one of a multiplicity of positions in the binder. lThe mvention has for its object to facilitate the handling of the sheets during the operations of removing sheets from the binder and inserting them in the binder. The 1nvention consists principally in a sheet holder having notches (or projecting lingers) along one edge, said notches being adapted to fit over the binding posts and a clamp at the other edge of said sheet holder adapted to hold a number of sheets. The invention further consists in the sheet holder and in the parts and combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

ln the drawing is illustrated a loose-leaf binder A comprising cover members l hingedly secured together and each provided with a multiplicity of straight pins or binding posts 2. In the binder are groups of comparatively short sheets 3, such as ledger account sheets or the like, arranged alphabetically, r according' to any desired system. Said sheets have a multiplicity of holes 4 along one margin adapted to lit' over the binding posts 2, so that each sheetv may be placed in dii'erent .positionsin the binder. In practice, thesheets are arranged in groups, each sheet of a group pro` jecting at the bottom (or top) beyond the preceding (or following) sheet,v thereby leaving a strip 5 of each sheet of the group exposed, on which exposed strip appears the name or other word by which the sheet Serial No. 94,400.

is indexed. l/'tfhen the sheets are iirst put in the binder, each group will ordinarily be Composed of a number of sheets 3 in` suficient to extend from the top to the bottom of the binder. Thus, if it is desired to insert an Vadditional sheet or sheets in any one group, the insertion can be made merely by moving some of the sheets of the group and it will notbe necessary to carry the adjustment to other groups of sheets. In addition to the short sheets 3, the binder will ordinarily be provided with full sized partition sheets 6 marked with the letters of the alphabet or kother suitable indexing memorandum. The posts 2 of one Cover member of the binder are preferably staggered with respect to the posts of the other member of the binder, so that they will pass through different holes 4 in the sheets 3.

`When it is desired to insert an additional sheet 3, (or sheets) it is necessary to open the binder to the proper group and remove the sheets preceding the point where the additional sheet is to be inserted, put the additional sheet (or sheets) in position and then replace the sheets that were temporarily'removed, such sheets, however being moved to a different position depending on the number of sheets removed. Likewise if a sheet is to be removed permanently it is necessary to remove temporarily the sheets preceding it in the group, then remove the desired sheet and replace the sheets that were temporarily removed, such sheets be` ing moved down a step to till the gap left by tlie removal of the sheet. The drawing illustrates a binder A open to permit insertion of sheets 3 in or removal of sheets trom a group. The indexing sheet 6 at the top of the group is opened with the opened cover member, leaving exposed the group of sheets 3 in which the change is to be made.

The making Lof such a change frequently results in tearing of sheets and in disarrangement thereof; and the present invention is a sheet holder B facilitating the malring of the change. Said sheet holder comprisesa plate 7 liaving a multiplicity of projecting fingers S'along one edoe, thereby forming notches 9 or recesses adapted to fit over binding posts 2 of the binder. Said recesses 9 are spaced apart even fractions of the c istauce between binding posts 2 and are comparatively close together, and the end portions of the lingers 8 are rounded ed, whereby it is easy to slip the sheet holder into a position where binding posts are received in notches thereof. VAlong the edge of the sheet holder B opposite the recesses is a clamping device l0 provided with a spring ll tending to hold it in engagement with the plate, and adapting it to engage sheets on the holder and hold them thereon.

if it is desired to insert an additional sheet, the holder B is placed beneath the sheet ust preceding the point where the additional sheet is to be located. The clamp is opened and the holder B pushed to the side until some of the notches 9 thereof tit over binding posts 2 and the edges of the sheets 3 are brought into the .clamping device 10. The body of the plate 7 is of such width that when the bottoms of the Vnot-ches 9 'rest against the binding posts 2, the edges of the sheets 3 are under the clamp l0 in position to be engaged thereby. Then the clamp l0 is permitted to engage the sheets 3 '1' to hold them on the plate 7 and theholder is raised, carrying with it the sheets. Ihe projecting fingers 8 support the marginal portions of the sheets 3. The new sheet 3 1s then placedin position in the binder and the holder is positioned over the proper binding posts and then lowered, permitting binding posts 2'to enter holes 4: of the sheets, thus positioning the sheets that were temporarily removed, so that the lowermost sheet is placed over the newly added sheet, leaving a narrow marginal strip of such newly added sheet exposed. The bringing of notches 9 of the plate into alinement with binding posts 2 likewise brings holes i of the sheets into alinement with binding postsZ, so that the sheets are easily put into,` the binder.

If a sheet is to be removed, the holder will be inserted beneath the sheet justr preceding said sheet that is to be removed and all of the preceding sheets of theV group will be lifted from the binder as above described. rlhen the sheet is removed and the` preceding sheets reinserted in the binder, the lowermost sheet of those that were temporarily removed taking the position of the sheet that was removed (that is one step Vlower than its former position) and the other sheets of the group likewise being moved downalong with the lowermostsheet.

Vit is quite diflicult to place the sheets lin the binder` and to properly fit the rholes thereof over the binding posts. The use of the sheet holder herein described maintains the sheets in proper arrangement while they are out of the binder and makes it easy to replace them in the binder; and it avoids the danger of tearing the sheet due to canting or twisting them in removing them from the binding posts or replacing them thereon; since the binding postsiitting in the notches guide the holder and malte it easy to raise and lower it.

hat I claim is: l. A device ofthe kind described comprising a` plate adapted to support a plurality of perforated sheets and a clamp for hold ing such sheets on the plate, said plate being provided with a `multiplicity of recesses along one yedge adaptedto receive binding posts cfa binder, the spaces between said recesses and the spaces between said pertorations insaidA sheets being equal to each other andiless than the spaces between said binding posts, the spacing of said recesses conforming to the spacing of the holes of said sheets.

2. A sheetholder adapted for use with a binder having a mnltiplicity of posts and using comparatively short sheets each having amultiplicity of perforations adapted to receive said binding posts, said sheet holder comprising a plate adapted to support a plu rality of sheets arranged so that a marginal portion of each sheetertends beyond the ad-` jacent sheet and a clamp for `holding such sheets on the plate, said plate being provided with a` multiplicity `of recesses along' one edge adapted to receive. `binding' posts of the binder, the spaces betweenrecesses and the spaces between said perforations being equal to each other and lessthan the spaces between said binding posts, the spacing of said ree forations of said sheets.

3. A `sliieet holder adapted for use with a binder having ainultiplicity of posts and using comparatively short sheets each having a multiplicity of perforations adapted to receive said 'binding posts, said sheet holder comprising a plate adapted to support a plu` rality of sheets and a clamp for holding such sheets on the plate, said plate being provided with a multiplicity of recesses along one edge adaptedto receive binding posts ofthe binder, said recesses in said plate and said perforations in said sheets being spaced apart evenV fractions of the distance between binding posts. 4 f

A sheet holder adaptedfor use with a binder having a multiplicity of straight posts and using comparatively short sheets each having a multiplicity of perforations adapted to receivesaid binding'posts, said sheet holder comprising a plate adapted to support a plurality of sheetsand a clamp along oneedge for holdingsuch sheets on theplate, said plate being provided with a multiplicity of fingers along the edge oppon sitesaidclamp, said fingers constituting the cesses conforming to the spacing of theper-V tions of the distance between binding posts and the ends oi said fingers being rounded off to guide said binding posts on said re* cesses.

5. A sheet holder adapted for use with vf a binder having a multiplicity of straight support a plurality of sheets and a clamp along one edge of the plate for holding such sheets thereon, said plate being provided with a multiplicity of recesses along the edge opposite said clamp adapted to receive binding posts ot' the binder., the distance between the clamping edge of said clamp and the bottoms of said recesses in said plate being less than the Width of said sheets measuring from one edge thereof to the bottoms of the perforations along the opposite edge, Whereby When Said sheet holder with the clamp open is inserted beneath sheets of a binder and positioned With binding posts of the binder resting in the bottoms ci recesses in the plate, the edges of such sheets extend into said clamp in position to be engaged thereby.
