Any desired number of leaves or pages 10 are adapted to be clamped be.- tween the said covers'l and. 2, the said leaves being formed with notches 11 in one end thereot to loosely fit over the respective pins 7. In clan'iping the leaves between the covers, the cover 2 is removed and the desired number 01 pages slipped over the clamping pins 7. after which the cover 2 is slipped over the pins 7 and pressure ex erted thereon to tightly bind the leaves 10, after which the. clamping screw-9 is tightened against its corresponding pin Tto hold the leaves and covers in clamped position.
ventional 10 of the loose-leaf. book,
The above "described construction is'all" @011- and no claim to novelty ismade thereon.
r The form otmy invention illustrated in Figures 1'5 inclusive comprises a rectangular'strip of suitable metal, such as brass, the ends ot'which are bentat substantially right angles to form; a central card holding body portion 12 and opposed flanges 13 which are adapted to slip between the leaves are formed with suitable means for posiltively engaging the adj acent leaves 10 of the book; in the present instance the said means comprising a plurality of pointed P1601907 .tions 1a which may be conventionally formed by punching rectangular holes out wardly from'the flanges 13. The cardholding portion'12 is formed with a plurality of upstanding flanges 15' which 'may be conveniently stamped troni thebody portion ot the metal and project outwardly from portion of the. device.
the card holding portion l2. of the labeling device, portions of said'flanges being arranged substantially parallel to the body stance three of these flangesloare shown as arranged along three sides of the card hold-v ing portion 12, and a suitable card16 hearing any desired inscription or identification matter is slipped under said flanges from the fourth side of thecard holdingportion 12, the said card being held in position between the said flanges and the body portion Jwardly beyond the edge of the flange 17 to remove the card from beneath the flanges 15. It s desnable to provide means for pre- These flanges '13 i In the present in;'
1 ,aospve venting the flanges 15 and 1'? from scratching a desk or the like upon which the book carrying the labeling device may be set for this purpose the card holding portion 12 may be provided adjacent the edges thereof with an outwardly projecting rib 19 which may be conveniently pressed outwardly from the body portion of the device so that when the bookcar vlng the labeling device is set upon its clamped edge the rib19. will engage the supgortand space the flanges 15 and 17 therefrom. U
In applying'the device to a loose-leaf book as shown in Figure 1', the cover2 is loosened and the pages of leaves 10 ot the book slightly separated, after which the flanges 13 ofthe labeling device are slipped between the leaves of the 'bookas shown in Figure 2.
, Pressure is then exerted upon the cover 2 in order to tightly bind the leaves 10 the said pressure causing thepointed projections 1-11 to pierce adjacent leavessoas to prevent the device from' slipping from between the leaves, and when the clamping screw "9 is tightened the labeling device is securely held in position between the leaves of the book. In
removing the labeling device from'the book it is merely necessary to loosen the cover 2 and raise the upper leaves 10 from the pointed projections 14- of one otflange s 13 and then raise the other flange from its ad jacent leaves, after which the device can be easily slipped outwardly from between the leaves, the smooth inner sides of theflanges 13 easily slipping from the leaves 10 between the said flanges. Injury to any of the'leaves -10 of the book as by tearing .orscratching5 is prevented.
In the modified form of the invention ijl-- lustrated in Figures 6 and 7, the device is formed of a rectangular strip ofmat'erial in substantially-the same manner as above de} 1 scribed, the said device comprising the flanges 20 adapted to slip between the leaves of the book, and the card holding portion 21 of the device comprising atrame which is formed by cutting out the center of the card holding portion as indicated at 22, the frame or margin of the card holding portion being in the form of an outwardly bulged rib 23. Card holding arongs 24 maybe conveniently struck up from the flanges 20 adjacent the frame of the card holding portion,- and one of the free edges of the frame may be provided with a similar card holding prong 25, the card being slipped betwee n" the said prongs 24 and 25 in a manner similar to that in which the cardl16 is secured between the flanges 15 and the card holding portion .12 of the construction above described. The side of the frame opposite the-prong 25" may be formed with a lug 26'to hold the card between the flanges 24- and 25 substantially as does the flange 17 of the construction shown by Figures 3 and 4, r
While I have shown the device used in connection with one conventional type of binder, it will be obvious that the device is equally well adapted for use with many other types of binders, and it will be seen that my invention eliminates the trouble and inconvenienceih'eretofore caused by the attachment of identification data to such binders to the outside of one of the covers Where binders so marked are piled one upon another. Other card holding means than the flanges above described, and other means than the pointed projections 14 for securing the device between the leaves of a book may be provided and various other modifications and changes may be made in the construction of the invention Without departing from the spirit or scope thereof. Therefore I do not desire to be limited in the construction of my invention except as required by the following claims wheirconstrued in the light of the prior art.
