INDEX TAB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May is, 1922.
Application filed November 7, 1921. Serial No. 513,483.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROY J. TURNER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of San Francisco, county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Index Tabs, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in index tabs. and has particular reference to index tabs such as are commonly used in filing systems, books of accounting or similar sets of books, in which it is desired to facilitate the finding of certain items contained in the same by showing index figures or letters or names or words on the outside of the book or system. While index tabs of this character have been used before and I do not claim invention for the general idea,
I have invented new structural features which render the tabs less expensive to manufacture and provide an easier way for attaching the same in their places.
With this obqject in view I have illustrated the preferred form of my invention in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my in.- dex tab detached, Figure 2 a side elevation of my index tab secured to a leaf of a filing system or the like, Figure 3 a cross-section along line 3-3 of Figure 2 and Figure 4.- a cross-section through the tab showing its par ticular structure. While the drawing shows the preferred form of the invention, I wish to have it understoodthat slight changes or modifications might be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The tab 1 is shown in the drawing as consisting of a strip 2 of flexible transparent ma- .terial, preferably celluloid, and bent upon itself along a central longitudinal line so as to form a channel comprising the two sides 3 and 4 and the back 6. To each side of the channel is secured a strip 7 of backing material, preferably made of rather stiff paper. These strips are preferably glued to the in side of the channel sides near their edges and extend to within close proximity of the back of the channel so as to form a saddle which cooperates with the back to form a guideway for the insert 8 and to hold the same. The latter is a narrow strip of rather heavy paper or similar material and is provided with proper identifying marks. It is bent upon itself so as to fit between the back of the channel and the saddle formed by the two strips 7.
The latter strips are provided, on their inner sides with adhesive material so that they may be pasted to the leaf 11 as shown in the drawing. To facilitate the fastening of the strips to the leaf I provide a plurality of straight parallel lines 12 on the outside of the same which are visible to the eye through the celluloid, and by means of which the tab can be easily secured in such a manner that its back runs parallel to the edge of the leaf to which it is to be attached.
I wish to call attention to the fact that the principal advantage of my device consists in the ease with which it can be manufactured. Since the backing consists of two independent strips they can be secured to the place the tab around the. edge of the leaf it is I to be used on, adjust it into a parallel position to the edge of the leaf and press it firmly against the same. The narrow strip 8 which has been previously provided with an identifying mark, may then be inserted.
I claim 1. An index tab of the character described, comprising a strip of flexible transparent material bent upon itself so as to form a channel and a strip of backing secured to each loose edge of the channel and extending to within close proximity of the back of the channel so as to form a saddle adapted to cooperate with the back of the channel in supporting an insert.
2. An index tab of the character described, comprising a strip of flexible transparent material bent upon itself so as to form j v 1,41e,52e
to Within close proximity of the back of the channel so as to form a saddle adapted to cooperate With the back of the channel in supporting an insert, a plurality of parallel guide lines being provided on one of the strips for faciltating the proper disposing of ROY J. TURNER.
