Application February 2, 1954, Serial No. 407,779
1 Claim. (Cl. 40-23) The present invention relates to a combination paper clip and a marker for books.
In general use today are metal clips and in some respects these clips are not satisfactory for the reason that due to the smoothness of the metal they do not hold firmly to papers, or to pages of books marking certain pages in books. Due to the smoothness of the metal the clips are subject to casual displacement.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a paper clip that will grip paper and hold it securely.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of a roughened, grooved, corrugated or spiral grooved surface on the elements that constitute the clip.
A still further object of the present invention is the provision of a clip that may be provided with a slip of paper having indicia thereon directing the papers to a particular person, or indicating the disposition of the papers.
A still further object of the present invention is the provision of a paper clip made of polyethylene or other suitable plastic material.
A still further object of the present invention is the provision of a paper clip having one element longer than the other.
A still further object of the present invention is the provision of a paper clip that may be made in diiferent shape and sizes, two different styles being shown in the drawing.
Other objects and features of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description in the application in which description reference is made to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation partly in section.
Figure 2 is a side elevation.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 and illustrating sheets of paper held by a clip.
Figure 4 is a front elevational view of a modified form of the clip partly in section.
Figure 5 is a rear view of the circular disk shown in Figure 4, and
Figure 6 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 6-6 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows and showing the grooves and corrugations.
Referring to the drawing Figures 1, 2, 3 and 6, the numeral 10 represents a clip of polyethylene or other suittable material that will grip paper, and it comprises a back oblong element 11 having one face 12 roughened or grooved, the grooves 13 being in crisscross formation, having apices 14, and adjacent the bottom edge 15 there are provided horizontal grooves 16, having rounded top portions.
Secured to the element 11, by a staple 17, or by other suitable means such as acetate, is element 18 that has one face 19 roughened 0r grooved, the grooves 20 being in crisscross formation and having apices 21. By securing elements 11 and 18 together by a staple or other suitable means adjacent the top edges 22 and 23 respectively of these elements, a space 24 shown in the drawing as exaggerated is provided between the inner faces of the elements from the top edges 22 and 23 down to the point of juncture and in the showing by a staple. Into this space is inserted a slip of paper as indicated by the dotted lines in Figure l, the slip of paper being shown exaggerated. On the slip of paper is placed indicia directing to whom the papers are to go, or what is to be done with them.
In the modified form of the invention shown in Figures 4 and 5, element 30 is of elongated configuration, having its ends 31 and 32 rounded. The inner face 33 being provided with a plurality of radial grooves 34. Secured to the element 30 by staple 35 is a circular disk 36, the inner face 37 of which is provided with concentric grooves 38. By stapling element 30 and disk 36 at the point shown in Figure 4, a space is provided similar to the space 23 for the reception of a slip of paper as shown by dotted lines 39, the slip of paper having indicia as previously enumerated in describing Figure 1.
In use of the clip as shown in Figure 3, a number of sheets of paper are held together by fingers of one hand and the clip brought into engagement with the papers by the other hand, or vice versa, portions of the elements 11 and 13 below the staple yieldingly allowing these elements to get a firm grip on the papers, the apices 14 and horizontal grooves 16 preventing casual displacement of the clip from the papers, the grooves 13 and 20 forming substantially suction pockets due to the crisscross formation of the grooves.
In use of the clip shown in the modified form Figures 4 and 5, the element 30 and circular disk 36 below the staple 35 yield to the insertion of papers between the ele-' ments, the radial grooves 34 and the concentric grooves 38 preventing casual displacement of the papers. A slip of paper 39 is inserted between the elements 30 and 36 above the staple with directive indicia.
The described forms of clip shown are well adapted to carry out the objects of the present invention, it is to be understood that modifications may be made within the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
A paper clip of plastic material comprising separate front and back elements stapled together at a predetermined median point, an open indicia receiving area formed above and between said elements by stapling at said predetermined point, said back element being longer with respect to the front element and having horizontal grooves at its point adjacent the lower end of said front element, said horizontal grooves having rounded top portions, crisscross grooves on the inner face of said front element, and crisscross grooves on the inner face of said back element above said horizontal grooves, all of said crisscross grooves having sharp edged top portions, said rounded top portions on said horizontal grooves allowing papers to be initially easily inserted between said elements, and said sharp edge top portions on said crisscross grooves holding said papers firmly after insertion.
