Description

PATENTED APR. 16, 190v. J. 0. SBYL& D. G. BUTTS. LABEL HOLDER FOR INDEX TAB CARDS.
APPLICATION FILED NOVTZI, 1906.
T all whom it may concern." Be it known that we, JOSEPH UNIT D sTA Es PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH C. sEYL-AND DANIEL o. BUTTS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNORS To YAWMAN & ERBE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YoRK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK. i
Specification ofLetters Patent.
Patented April 16, 1907.
Application filed November 21, 1906. Serial No. 344,889.-
C. SEYL and DANIEL G. BUTTs, both. of Chicago', in the county of Cook and State of Illinois,.have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Label- Holders for Index- Tab Cards; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, forming a part of the "specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
Our presentinvention relates to improvements in card or label holders, and especially of the type adapted to be applied to division-cards and similar devices whereby documents may be divided into appropriate classifications; and the object of the present invention is to provide a device of this kind which may be made very cheaply and which is capable of being easily and quickly attached to a card or other suitable support, the parts of the device being so arranged that asuitably-inscribed card may be firmly held therein, and the. device as a whole will be secure'ly fastened.
To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations and arrangements of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
\ In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a drawer of a filling-cabinet having cards therein provided with label-holders constructed in accordance with our present invention. Fig.2 is a rear elevation of the label-holder, showing it attached to a division-card. Fi 3 represents a central vertical section on t e line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Figs. 4 and 5 are perspective views of the labelholder proper and the retaining or fastening member, the parts being separated from one another and detached from the card; and Fig, 6 represents a blank from which the body portion of the label-holder shown in the present instance is formed.
Similar reference-numerals in the several figures indicate similar parts.
The label-holder shown in the present embodiment of our invention is adapted for atployed generally in card-indexes and paperfiling devices of various descriptions, and it is made up of two separable parts or members a receptacle portion adapted to contain the inscribed label and a fastening member for securing the label to the supportingcard.
The receptacle portion in the present instance is formed from a blank, such as is 7 shown in, Fig. 6, the blank being punched, preferably, from sheet material and provided with an attaching portion 1, having spurs 2 or pointed projections punched laterally and upwardly therefrom and of a suitable form to secure a firm hold on the card, and above the attaching portion is provided a sight-aperture 3, having the flaps 4 and 5 at'each end and a flap 6 above it, the edges 7 and 8 being formed at such angles that when these flaps are folded up on the dotted lines indicated they will form closely-abutting edges and the'flaps when thus doubled over onto the rear surface of the plate form inwardly-projeoting flanges providin a recess or receptacle for the reception of t e label 9, having the appropriate indioia or inscription thereon.
The securing member comprises in the presentinstance a plate 10, preferably of resilient or spring material, having an intermediate laterally-sprung portion 11 and having the rearwstrdly-turned portions 12 and 13 at its upper edge, 'a recess 14 extending downwardly from the upper edge of this member and serving to admit the finger, so that the 'member may be slipped downwardly, and
thus out of engagement with the body portion of the label-holder.
The label-holder may be readily assembled and applied to the division-card or other su port by applying the body portion of the holder with the label contained therein to the desired edge of the card or support with the attaching portion 1 arranged on the forward surface thereof and the label or Inscribed card 9 is fitted beneath the flaps 4, 5, and 6 and with. its lower edge resting on the upper edge of the division-card or support, as shown in Fig. 3. The fastening member may be then applied, the turned'upper edges 12 and 13 thereof being introduced between the vertical flanges 4 and 5 at the rear of the holder and the member then slipped uptachment to an edge of ad ordinary paper or wardly until these edges engage the top of cardboard division-card, such as are em--,4 the receptacle, the upper edges of the memada ted for universal application to divisionber bearing against the rear surface of the label to retain it in position so that the inscription thereon may be viewed through the sight-aperture 3 and the lower edge of the fastening member bears against the rear surface of the division-card to compress the latter between the said fastening member and the attaching portion 1 of the label-holder proper, causing the spurs or pointed projections 2 on the latter to obtain a firm hold on the card or support, and thus prevent its displacement, except by removal of the fastening member.
A label-holder constructed in accordance with our invention may be-produced very cheaply, as it is composed of only two parts, and these may be readily punched from sheet material, and formed into shape, and it is car s and other devices, such as are used in indexes and paper-filing devices of various descriptions, and by reason of the ease with which it may be applied and removed relatively to the cards or supports these labelholders may, if desired, be transferred. from one card to another, and in this way they could be used repeatedly.
We claim as our invention 1. A card or label holder embodying a member adapted to contain the label or inscribed card, and having an attaching portion, and a separate fastening member adapted to cooperate therewith and having a portion arranged to yieldingly compress an edge of a card or other sup ort between it and the attaching portion of t 1e other member.
2. A card or label holder embodying a edges to form-a receptacle for the label, and having an attaching portion thereon, and a securing member'having portions arranged to cooperate With the said flanges of the firstmentioned member, and having a portion arranged to engage a card or other support and compress the latter between it and the said attaching portion of the other member.
3. In a card or label holder, the combination with a body portion having a receptacle formed therein to receive the label, and an attaching portion adapted to engage one surface of a card or other suitable support, of a fastening member having asliding engagement with the body portion and having portions for confining the label and for engaging a surface of the supporting-card for compressing the latter between it and the said attaching portion on the body portion.
4. In a card or label holder, the combination with a body portion embodying a plate having its edges turned and doubledto form flanges spaced from one side of said plate to form a receptacle for a label, and having an attaching portion adapted to engage a surface of a card or other suap'ort and having gripping devices thereon, oi a cooperating se curing member embodying a plate having a portion adapted to slide beneath the flanges on the body portion,'and arranged to compress the supporting-card into cooperative relation with the said attaching portion.
