FILING GUIDE CARD.
VApplication filed March 8, V1923. kSerial No, 623,617.
" To all whom t may con-cern.'
Be it known that I, ADoLF H. SGHAFFERT, a citizen of the nited States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a certain snew and useful Improvement Vin Filing tion.
This invention relates to guide cards, such as are employed to indicate varioussections or divisions of matter in the file.
The object of the invention is the provision of a guide card having an angular label holder so constructed that when a number of cards are placed close to each other in a file, the label holders will nest within each other so as to economize in the rlnount of space which they occupy in the e. The principal feature ofthe invention resides in an angular label'holder in which there is no portion extending in the plane of the file to prevent the exterior angular portion of one label holder projecting into the interior angular portion of the next holder. It is believed the invention will be best understood by a description thereof taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
f Figure 1 is a side elevation of a card showing the label holder at the top thereof;
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the label holder;
Figure 3 is a section substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is an edge elevation of a number of cards showing the manner in which the label holders thereof will nest together when cards are placed closely together in the file;
Figures 5, 6, 7 and 8 show a modified form of label holder;
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 2;
Figure 6 is a section on the line 6 6 oi Figure 5;
Figure 7 is a view taken on the line 7-7 of Figure 6; and
Figure 8 is a section taken on the line 8 8 of Figure 7.
Referring now to the drawings, in which like reference characters indicate like arts in the several views, 10 indicates a ling guide card having the label carrier, generally indicated at y11 .in Figure 1, at the upper edge thereof. The label holder 11 is formed of a piece of sheet material, preferably sheet metal, which is centrally folded as at13, the two halves of the device extend ing from a central portion thereof in spaced, but substantially parallel, relation. Immediately adjacent to the folded portion 13 are the parallel portions 14; and 15 between whichthe label 16 may be inserted. The
portions 14 and 15 adj acentto the lower edge of the label are bent substantially at right angles to provide the portions 17 and 18, which in turn are bent to provide the portions 19 and. 20, extending downwardly on opposite sides of the card 10.
The label holder is secured to thecard by means of the eyelets or rivets 21, which pass through the parts 19 and 20and also through the card. The portionl 15 of the label holderfis provided with the inwardly extending lugs orindentations 22, which impinge against the rear side ofthe label and act to retain it in position. It will be noted that the upper edge of the label engages the folded portion 13, while the lower edge thereof engages the portion 17 immediately adjacent to the member 14. The label, therefore, is securely maintained in position. The member 14 is cut away, as indicated at 23, so that the inscription upon the label will be visible.
Reference will now be made to Figures 5 to 8, which show a modified form of the invention. The label holder shown in these figures is similar to the one just described and the corresponding parts, so far as possible, will be indicated by the same reference characters primed as employed in Figures 1, 2 and 3. Only the differences between the form disclosed in the latter figures and the one above described will be pointed out.
f The form disclosed in Figure 6 is shown with a somewhat wider label holder than the form of Figure 3 and, therefore, the angular relation of the various parts is some` what diderent. The only material difference, however, between the two forms is that the part 15 is provided with the spring members 24 and 25, which are arranged to engage the rear surface of the label and maintain it in position. The members 24C and 25 are formed by cutting parallel slots at each side thereof and forcing the metal between the slots inwardly beyond the surface ofthe metal forming the part 15.
Sok far as applicant lis aware, practically all the label vholders of this general character which have previously appeared, are of two charactersf-one the flat label holder in which the holder and label both lie in substantially the plane of the card, and the other, the angular label holder where the label is maintained at an angle to the card, as in applicants arrangement. Vhile the flat label holders have the advantage of nesting morey closely when the guidev cards are placedtogether in the file, the angular label holder was superior in that it permitted the labelto be more easily seen when'. examining the file. Each of the angular label holders, however, with which a. licant is familiar, have a back portion whic i extends substantially in the plane of the card. Therefore, when the guide cards are placed close together, the forwardly projecting point of one label holder engages the rear of the next one, Vcausing the guide cards to occupy an undue space in the le.
Applicants arrangement, whereby the strips of metal forming the front and rear of the label holder are maintainedin substantially parallel relation, permit the several label holders to be nested closely together, as indicated in Figure 4 of the drawings. Thus, guide cards made according to applicants invention may be nested closely, as those employing flat label holders and yet Leonce? retain the advantage of guide cards having the angular label holders. This form of guide card is found to be particularly advantageous in check files where the guide cards'are of only about five inches width over all.
It is to be understood that applicant con-A templates modiications not shown in the drawings Vor described in the specification. The invention.I therefore, should be limited merely by the scope of the appended claim.
Havingthus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by LettersPatent of the United States is:
The combination with a guide card, of a label holder comprising two substantially co-extensive portions of sheet metal, the lower parts of which are positioned on opposite sides of the card, and means extending throughthe card for securing said parts each to the other, said portions being bent at the top of the card forwardly to form an ofl'set, and then rearwardly and upwardly to form a label receiving' recess therebetween, the forward one of said portions having an opening therethrough near the upper edge to expose a label positioned in the label receiving recess.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name'this 28 day o-fFebruary, 1923. y
ADOLF H. SCHAFFERT.
