COMBINATION CALENDAR AND MEMORANDUM PAD HOLDER Filed April 28, 1945 Fla IN V EN TOR.
A rrap/vfr Patented July 6, 1948 gorrice RANDUM PAD HOLDER I EvangelA. Haveles, Los Angeles, Calif. v y
Application April 28, 1945, Serial No. 590,784 r 2 Claims. (Cl. 281 15) ;-My invention relates to a combination calendar and memorandum pad hold-er and the objects of my invention are:
Fir-st, to provide a device of this character which conveniently combines the functions of a memorandum pad, a pencil and a calendar;
Second, to provide a device of this character which can be used when placed on a horizontal surface or used when secured on a vertical support;
Third, to provide a device of this character which enables a memorandum pad to be very easily secured therein and removed therefrom and normally holds this pad firmly in writing position;
Fourth, to provide a device of this character with a pad holding flat spring formed in a novel manner, and
Fifth, to provide such a device which is attractive in appearance, practicable to manufacture and generally eflicient and durable in service.
With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of my device with a calendar, a pad and a portion of a pencil secured therein; Fig. 2 is a side elevational View of the same with a portion of the lateral walls of the pad cradle broken away to facilitate the illustration; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the same, taken from the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar or identical parts and portions throughout the three views:
The pad cradle l,memorandum pad 2, bracket 3, pencil clasp 4 and calendar pad 5a constitute the principal parts and portions of my invention.
My device will normally be formed from sheet metal and the fiat pad cradle I is provided with turned-up edges forming lateral walls la between which the pad 2 is inserted and one end of the cradle l is provided with a portion bent to double back to form a combination pad grip and bracket attachment plate lb as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3. The stub end of the pad 2 is pushed between this plate lb and the fiat spring lc which is integral with the cradle portion l and formed by parting the portion I along two spaced parallel lines fora short length and bending the tongue lo so formed upwardly. The free end is bent as at ld so that the pressure exerted by the spring is localized upon a small portion of the pad 2 and thisJoending at l d also prevents the end of the spring; from contacting and tearing the undersurface of thepad 2 when the'pad is withdrawn from the cradle I. Along the center line of the spring lo and at the root portion thereof the reinforcing rib la is formed by pressing out a diamond shaped portion without shearing the metal. It is preferred, in forming the spring lc, that spaces If be provided at each side of the spring by removing narrow strips of metal and this feature avoids any tendency for the undersurface of the pad 2 to be caught between the spring and the cradle portion l.
The bracket 3 may be formed from fiat stock material by bending the same transversely as at 3a and 3b. punching a hole at one end of the bracket and forming a pair of lateral turned-in flanges 3d which are adapted to engage the sides of the member lb as shown in Fig. 3.
A pencil clasp 4 adapted to hold a pencil to is provided on the bracket 3, the two similar p'ortions 4 and 4b of the clasp co-acting to removably hold the pencil between them. The portion 4b is referably stamped out of the bracket 3 and bent upwardly leaving a rectangular hole 40 in the bracket 3. This hole 40 allows the fingertip to be used in urging the calendar pad So out of engagement with the calendar pad holder 5 which is a bent flange stamped out of the bracket 3 and also out of engagement with the corn-er tabs 5b. These members 5 and 5b normally hold the calendar pad on top of the bracket 3.
In use my invention will be placed on a flat surface such as a table or desk or hung by means of the hole 30 on a hook so that the undersurface of the pad cradle l rests against a wall or other vertical support. The stub portion of the pad 2 is pressed between the member lb and the flat spring lo and the leaves of the pad may be torn off as used one at a time using the edge of the member lb to delineate the line along which the leaf can be torn. The calendar pad 5a used will normally be of the loose-leaf type and. the hole 40 in the bracket facilitates the removal of the same for the rearrangement of the leaves according to the month or day as the case requires. When required, the bracket 3 may be removed from the cradle l.
Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangement but desire to include in the scope of my invention the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In. a device of the character described, the combinationof a memorandiimf'pad cradle with side and end walls having horizontal-1y extending a bracket having clip' portions engaging said horiz'ontally extending flanges removablyiisecnred thereto having a pencil clasp comiiris-ingtwo spaced similar spring plates both-of which are ,15 Number integral with said bracket, and a calendar" pea holder comprising integral bent flanges' stainpcd from said bracket.
2. In a device of the character describedi'the' combination of a memorandum pad cna-d-le with thereto h aVing a""'pericil clasp comprising f-tw'o integral with said bracket, and a calendar pad holder comprising integral bent flanges stamped from said bracket, one of said spring plates being stamped from said bracket leaving a hole in said 6 bracket within the area outlined by said bent flanges.
EVANGEL A. HAVELES.
